I've needed to keep things simple because of work stress recently. Doing double clean and push press three times a week, and some double clean and front squat, with a couple of sets of pull ups a week, has been more than adequate.

Big thing for me to remember is no dip on the catch. With a bar power clean, I learned to dip under the bar, then stand all the way up.

I had a bucketful of issues like this when I first learned KBs. Once I learned that KBs and barbells were the "Same, but different," I was able to do train with both. Thanks for sharing this.

The snatch is a clean that ends over head. My snatch technique got much better when I realised this. Ellbows tucked is a nice cue.

Joe Daniels has a great tip for the snatch. He says pretend your elbow is velcroed to your ribs until you reach the point where the momentum of the KB would tear the Velcro as you go up into the snatch.

That start position is eerily reminiscent of a 4 point football stance. the Cut Block is incoming!

Great vid and great tips. I’m a beginner with KB’s and am still practicing single cleans. Best tip I got, much like what you said about keeping elbows tight, was to do it like you were zipping up your jacket.

I just had the same light bulb moment your other trainees do! The clean is a swing! It isn’t a pull like the barbell clean. Thank you for this! If I may ask a question, how do i control the elbow extension on the descent from clean or snatch once KB is at waist height?
@DanJohnStrengthCoach
@DanJohnStrengthCoach Год назад
Clean: try to just let them straighten out and turnit into a swing. Snatch, "soft elbows" until the weight tugs, then, again, swing elbows.

One more caution... keep your thumbs wrapped around handles and watch for crush injuries not if but when the bells clink together during this dynamic move. It might be a rite of passage and you'll only do it once (if you're prone to learning from mistakes) but it can really hurt.

I really like one of your cues for the kettlebell swing: attack the zipper. Considering the double kettlebell clean is a swing, is that cue still applicable? Or does the extra space needed for 2 kettlebells swinging back necessitate a different approach (such as letting the bells swing a bit lower)? I find them hitting my thighs when I try to “attack my zipper”
@DanJohnStrengthCoach
@DanJohnStrengthCoach 2 месяца назад
I think it is always a key cue, yes.

Great explanation Dan! One question, I’ve noticed that doing double kettlebell work I feel sore/tight in my lower back. Doesn’t happen with single arms though, any idea what I’m doing wrong? I feel like I’m following the same technique.

This is such a helpful video. Any chance you’ll do one for double cleans? I just watched your clean video but have trouble with the double.

So...I did a video on Double KB cleans but you want a video on Double KB cleans. I am wondering if this video, on Double KB cleans, might be "just the ticket' for a video on Double KB cleans.

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach can you use this technique with barbells?

Something else: Do you always use the inverted V grip with 2 kettlebells?

Great explanation. But then if everything is a swing, What’s the added benefit of doing kb cleans or snatches ? Because the “drop” is less “fluid” than when you just swing it perfectly. Thanks
@sebastianzornosa9953
@sebastianzornosa9953 Год назад
That’s a good question man! The clean and snatch are much more intense on my pulling muscles (biceps and lats, respectively). Also they are a little less inefficient and as Dan teaches, inefficient moves are great cardio. Snatches are way more explosive and intense than swings also the bell moves from a rapid and dynamic movement to a quick deceleration overhead. This causes your shoulder stabilizers to work hard. I think you can argue that snatches are not needed if you swing enough and do enough overhead work (Turkish get ups and presses) However, the clean is incredibly useful as it is the foundation of your press (strict, push press or jerk) and also the foundation of your squat. Hope that helped.

On the way to the back swing from the clean position, I feel a pinch in my lower back (only with the left side or doubles, nothing on the right side, interestingly...) and I end up feeling very sore in my lower back after a workout with cleans, I'm currently investigating that with my physio, but i'd like to know your opinion in case it's only a technique issue and not a physical issue due to a potential injury.

This is more of a medical question and I don’t really answer those those kinds of things. Spend the time with somebody who can do some hands-on with you and you might get the answer there. I never know what’s going on without being there and being able to see it.

Is it ok to squeeze them together (clapping noise) once in the fighting position or clean position? -Carlos
