Double pointed needles may seem scary at first, but learning how to knit with double pointed needles will improve your knitting game in so many ways. If you want to knit socks, mittens, sweaters, or even hats, you’ll want to master double pointed needles. In this knitting video, you’ll learn why these bad boys are necessary, how they differ from circular needles, and most importantly, how to use them!
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
1. Why you need DPNs
2. Why DPN knitting is like taking a bus
3. Circulars vs DPNs - what's the difference?
4. How to knit with double pointed needles step-by-step
VIDEO CHAPTERS:
00:09 Difference between Circulars and DPNs
00:54 How do DPNs Work?

* Footnote for knitting nerds: Okay, there exist micro circular needles that are teeny-tiny and smaller than 16", but honestly, those things are crazy. I tried them once and my hands were cramping after fifteen minutes. I find them unpleasant, and I’d much rather work with double pointed needles for my small circle knitting needs. But if you're a daredevil, try out a pair of micro circulars and maybe you'll never need DPNs again. Who knows! Have at it!

I'm literally only knitting my first ever item (a scarf) and just clicked on this out of curiosity. Damn it, I thought I just knit stuff and then stitch it together to make socks and beanies. Everyone else here is like "yay you gave me confidence" and I'm like "what?!?! This knitting stuffs already hard enough withouht throwing two more needles in there!" lol I'll definitely be coming back to this video when it comes time to complicate my knitting a little more haha thank you!

I much prefer my DPNs connected by a cord, like Addi circulars. DPNs always slide out and fall, where my cats take them and run like hell. For small stuff, and anything in the round, I use TWO circulars. Works freaking awesome. :)

It's a really steep learning curve when you start out! I knit my first scarf about three years ago. I don't think socks are a good second project. There are patterns for handwarmers where you knit them flat and then stitch them up. I like this site for basic newbie patterns and tips: www.simple-knitting.com/easy-knitting-patterns.html

I also started with crocheting but then I wanted to knit sweaters for winter thinking I could finish at least two sweaters... NOPE on the second day I was only at 6-7 rows. Had to start all over at least 14-15 times. It’s been 20 days and I just finished the back piece, even undoing the stitches is complicated 😪 in crochet it was like you just pull the string..

I'm so glad I found your tutorial video on using dbl pointed needles. This is my first project using them and I was just not sure how I was going to accomplish this. Thank you for such a clear and easy to follow video!

Really clear, nice analogy that makes sense. Have had to abandon circular needles, even with more stitches. Pace good. Wish me luck with my seamless softies!!

Thank you so much for clear instructions. I consider myself to be an intermediate to expert knitter. I have never worked on pointed needles and was determined to make infant mittens for my niece. I got it 💓💃🏾💓

I am not a beginner but never tried 4 needles before. However, i saw a hat in a store that was perfect except for the price! so, here I am watching your video andI have to say, this is the BEST introduction video for any craft skill /i've ever learned, or indeed, taught (sewing). Thank you for the clarity of your video and your fabulous analogy - always one of my favourite ways of learning. Thanks

Oh my goodness!! Thank you so much, now I understand how it works and what I'm supposed to do. I had no idea and couldn't even begin to understand by just looking at words in a pattern. Look out little bus(es) I'm on my way!!!

I’ve just ordered some dpns because I want to be able to use all kinds of knitting needles. I have straight and circulars of all sizes, and I’ve made socks using 9-inch circulars and longer cables using magic loop. Now, I want to learn how to use dpns, so this is very helpful; thank you!

when i searched for how to knit a hat, all that came up were circular needles and knitting a rectangle that you sew together after. slightly mad that i had to search for the right thing so much, but glad to have finally found it!

Thank you so much for teaching me how to knit on double pointed needles! I wanted to learn how to knit clothes, but I don't have the patience to make them full-sized so I got one of those little wooden mannequins that artists use to get proportions right, and I wanted to knit clothes for that but circular needles are to big, and I tried watching a different tutorial, but they didn't explain it as well as you did, so thank you!

I bought some fantastic multicoloured sock wool and was putting off starting a project. I am left handed and find a lot of tutorials confusing. But….I found yours easy to follow and I am now nearly finished the first sock without getting my hands tangled up in the needles!! Thank you 🙂

Thank you so much! I have a hat that I need to transfer from circular needles to DPNs, and this video was so helpful. I am ready to tackle the next step.

You rock! This video has been sitting on my watch later list for a long while now. It just looked too complicated at the time. Today, I needed to channel some frustrated energy into something worthwhile other than stewing. I learned how to use dpk's! Wow. It's far easier than I thought. I can now start planning on mittens, socks, and, one of these days, sweaters. :-) Thank you for your clear, paced instructional videos.

Love the video. I am going to try sgain. Never understood the naked needle. Using the bus analogy makes me think of city buses. Sometimes the journey is so tedious you don't remember why you even wanted to be there to begin with. The best thing I have ever done with DPNs is make I cord. Something very satisfying about making cord. Regards

I’m a beginning knitter, just finished my first class. Made a sampler cowl with 5 stitches. I love it! I enjoy your videos so much! You explain so clearly and have answered so many of my questions. I love the bus analogy! I watch you all the time to learn from your experiences.
