Was skating the longest distance I've gone so far, and I started thinking through this logic. It really starts to become apparent over longer distances. You will exhaust yourself too easily if you are high, and have busy feet.
@NikZvi
@NikZvi 5 лет назад
You're right, but it depends a lot from the area where you're skating. Busy city requires busy feet. Too many obstacles, too short distances between stops.

It may also depend of the rolling quality of your wheels :-) busy feet is really needed is you use slow wheels. If you never try I suggest to test a set of racing wheels ... you would be amazingly surprised... ho much you can glide even with a short (in distance) push
@TheRealTimnation
@TheRealTimnation 5 лет назад
@@ThePascalbriand Hello! I took a look at your channel last week at the suggestion of another commenter on this thread. I already found some great examples of the double push on your channel, so thank you! I'd be very interested in knowing what you mean by "racing wheels". I'm currently on a tri-skate set up identical to the ones that Bill uses. I'd love a good suggestion for a set of 100mm wheels to purchase.
@ThePascalbriand
@ThePascalbriand 5 лет назад
what in timnation in the world you will find only 2 brands that are able to make racing wheels: matter with the g13 model hardness f1... is the best for rolling ... and mpc blackmagic xfirm . The mpc is little wider and give more confort and balance for changing edge to edge ... as the matter is little faster on road. You can’t be disappointed with those one. If you never rest you will definetly feel the change in rolling compare to other wheels. Those wheels are dual density that mean they are soft inside and harder outside to give lot of grip in the corner. Avoid to slide with it at begining :-) when they are burned it’s ok to slide on them till you don’t touch the inside soft material :-) ... when you test the roll of those wheels it’s impossible to go back to another one :-) so much pleasure of free gliding.

@Zhanchi4ever

Heyy I used to struggle with the same thing until I started going to the gym, I think it might be a combination of bad back muscles and overcompensation for a weak core. Maybe buy one of those ab rollers. That thing really helped me with stability and core strenght. Hopefully this helps.

I've experienced the same lower back pain as well. I started doing 2 minute intervals low & fast then 2 minutes higher & slower. It's helped me quite a bit. I'm able to stay lower much longer & get a stronger more efficient push.

@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 5 лет назад
If you skate sporadically or are new, it may just be your Q Lumborum, spinal erectors, and stabilizers are fatiguing and waste removal is slow. Lower to mid back blood flow and neural-muscular efficiency are unusually challenged in skating because of our froward hunch (convex back). Regular skaters usually lose the burning back syndrome due to physiological changes/responses . I would take regular 2 minute breaks while skating until the back feels fine. Core work from all directions will help too.

You’re really great & an inspiration but you aren’t doing the double push at all.:-) You are ‘snaking’ along and not setting down your hanging skate ((after)) a full UNDER & OVER skate edge push from the opposite leg. I was the same when I started double pushing. the famous Eddy Matzger had the best method to get the leg timing & double push correct you simply say to yourself SET DOWN either skate!... then straight away you UNDER PUSH then OVER PUSH that skate to a full stride, only then SET DOWN (the other skate) / RECOVER (the first skate behind you). then repeat UNDER OVER PUSHES again for the other leg you just SET DOWN. That way when you set your skate down you must transition onto the outside edge which is the UNDER PUSH. & once that outside curve is complete you transfer to an OVER PUSH which is the inside edge to a full push out, and CRUCIALLY you must do a full leg push out BEFORE you SET DOWN with the other skate. Otherwise you get the classic bad snaking where both legs follow each other in unison rather than one leg UNDER PUSHING & OVER PUSHING to a full stride while the other skate remains in the air behind you. Only then do you get the distinctive double push look..ok. You can just stay on one skate doing a constant under to over push keeping one leg behind all the time. It’s very hard as you must transfer body weight like a skier. But improves double push technique the best..Practice. watch the speed skate pro’s..
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 5 лет назад
This video is about prolonging stride glide, not teaching double push. The Speed Skating double push is too surface dependent for City Skating, as the underfoot is going beyond the midline. This stride must be bastardized for City Skating. Eddy Matzger is a great skater and teacher of this technique.

I got the wrong impression, I realise too the need to keep stride narrow on the street especially when using full length 110 speed skates:-). I guess I was more surprised to see you skate in a way people who haven’t acquired the right double push leg timing. But I get it now. Keep up the great work..

Took me 2 months of skating 1-2 hours practically every day and I learnt the double push by just going out and skating, edge control came naturally and as such I naturally discovered the double push and realised I was doing a weird pseudo version and had outside edge control during pushes and I've been refining it.

I love you brother. You’re so analytical and perfectionistic with your technique, and focused on performance, but in the short windows of time when You actually allow the audio of the ambient environment to make it into your videos, I can actually hear your bearings. If I may, I do have one suggestion… for me, my enjoyment of skating is greatly enhanced by extremely silent bearings. I love gliding along so quietly that nobody could ever hear me coming. Durometer of wheels etc are part of that but above all it’s about the bearings and not just the quality of the bearings, but how you service them. I won’t promote my favorite brand and model of bearing, but I will say this, even though I think they are the best, I don’t like how they come from the factory…oiled. Sure you can free spin them forever but this doesn’t make them faster than a bearing that is properly greased with the right grease and even if they were a bit slower greased, my enjoyment of that solid thump and silent glide is way better than 1% more speed with an oiled loud bearing that sounds like there is free play. They first thing I do is soak them in solvent and dry them, then I inject with a syringe a very small dot of ceramic bearing grease between each bearing. I chose bearings with a very tight tolerance and a deep race that is machined to the most exacting standards of smoothness. I cannot even begin to tell you how much this enhances my skating experience. It’s taking me years to find the best bearings and perfect how I set them up.
@ilmanakbar

may I know your bearings recommendations, the best one, and the budget one? I reckon if I service the budget bearings well, it'll perform better than the pricier one, won't it?

This is great, very few people break down stride and I know my own stride is often inefficient, so I'll try to incorporate this. I try to use longer strides when the terrain allows and my wheels can roll, debris free, but there are few stretches like this where I live. On the rougher stuff I try not to allow my feet to stride too far from my centre, to maintain balance, avoid slippage and that annoying skate rebound that kills your rhythm. Let's face it though, who doesn't love a choppy 'busy-footed' sprint?! ; )

got to tell you honestly and without trying to be offensive, the depurated technique of a speed skater is to be able to utilize the best equipment using the absolute less energy and keeping a peace of 38 to 40 k per hour, in your particular case the problem is you are using extra heavy skates, and sluggish wheels, with that it is impossible to make use of the really best technique ! about the double push yes it is a way to accelerate but not necessarily all of the top skaters in the world double push there are quite a number of speedsters who have a technique of their own, and they are competitive and win races, so the point to make here is, the speed maintained over a period of along distance, and the way the skater accelerates. Chad Hedrick introduced the double push technique, but with the advent of sophisticated boots frames and wheels and bearings the technique has changed and we have a large variety of styles not necessarily a particular one equally good! but there is something in common in the area of depurated techniques all of the skaters have to use the same equipment, My advice to you is get a decent pair of speed skates and go back to the drawing board, then try to skate 20 k at a speed of 38 km per hour then you would be in a position to share a really useful comment at that point. have the fun of course, and please excuse my frankness,
@BillStoppard

I think you missed the point. This is not a double push demo or tutorial. I referred to a technique which can influence city skating without being slavishly replicated. The double push is not a useful tool in the city unless heavily modified.
