In north Texas use the word tornado rather than hurricane for the barkets. Normally the only thing we get from hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast is heavy rain and a little wind and maybe a tornado or two from it.

The exterior install is the preferred location, but when done as a retrofit or repair placing them inside is better than nothing. :) I installed them on the inside of my current workshop when I built it, not knowing better then.

Very instructive. I will find it very interesting to see how you put the trusses up without damaging the hurricane ties. I'm used to 24' or 36' trusses and flipping them by hand maybe you have something else in mind. That's why we always put them on after. Glad you have nice weather for this. Trying to do this in rain or snow would not be fun.

Awesome playlist, I'm watching the entire thing while planning our home build for spring 2025. Question, while nailing your double top plate directly on top of studs, how are you not hitting the nails that hold the stud to the top plate? Is there a technique to this, sheer luck or something I'm missing? I would think it would be better to offset a few inches and nail at an angle towards the stud no?

When nailing the top plate on, I like to angle the nails. One nail angled to the left, the other angled to the right. Or to the inside and outside. Having the nails at opposing angles helps to lock the 2 boards together much better than just nails straight in. Super job, looking good. Thanks for bringing us along

Hahaha Sam, this has just proved a point that ALL men make to their better half's. When we are asked " why don't you throw that away, your not going to use it!". And we reply back " I'm going to be needing it at some point!". The roofing brackets maybe about 6 years old but you still used them and not only did you have a chance to use them but you nodoubt have managed to save a few dollars in the process. Sam what is the plan for the roofing are you doing a flat roof or a slight pitch which alway's looks way better!!!. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

suggestion to put a 2x2 around top plate for a nail/ screw anchor place for ceiling panels Sheetrock or other paneling also i believe called California corners also for paneling screws at corner locations eliminate floating edges
@Samcraftcom
@Samcraftcom 10 месяцев назад
You're exactly right on the California corners - they act as drywall nailers inside the walls. The ceiling nailers will be installed later on, but only on the gable end walls. Anything put in place on the truss bearing (side) walls would need to be cut and fit between each truss to overhang into the room.

I just noticed that you don't have gutters on your carport. You should put them on the side facing your shop, otherwise the water running off will splash against the side of the shop, go through any seams/gaps and rot the walls.
@Samcraftcom
@Samcraftcom 10 месяцев назад
It's on the list. As it is built right now it's "not compatible" for gutters to be added. However, I've come up with a solution and way to add them properly.

So I buy more because I'm ready to build stuff now. Yep, I'm a woman who does all of the building, remodeling etc. He's a city boy who grew up with parents that hired people for everything. Me I'm country grew up learning to fix everything. I digress, he usually finds my parts days, weeks, years later and I put them away so I know where they are for my next project. 😊

I have looked for an answer to this, and maybe if you have time you might give it some thought. Putting up walls on a slab where the slab extends 10: past the wall with no way to move walls closer to edge. How do you keep rain water from coming under or through those pressure treated plates. Thanks.
@inmyimage1081
@inmyimage1081 10 месяцев назад
the top of any concrete that butts up against the exterior walls needs to be lower than the surface of the main area.
@Samcraftcom
@Samcraftcom 10 месяцев назад
Here's my non-expert opinion of how I would address the issue if the concrete and wall placement cannot be moved. I would treat the wall-to-slab-seam similar to how windows are flashed. I would put a wide waterproofing membrane over the wall and down to the slab and extend it as far as possible -- all as one continuous piece from wall to slab. I would use something like "GCP Applied Technologies Bituthene 4000 Waterproof Membrane". If you're framing the walls on top of the concrete, don't forget your treated wood bottom plate and your sill sealant (foam strip and also a few beads of Big Stretch caulking). Think of your wall and slab as a home's basement wall and foundation and waterproof them the same way.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE HOW LONG YOUR TRUSSES HAVE TO BE?
@Samcraftcom
@Samcraftcom 10 месяцев назад
For engineered trusses, the company you go through will ask you questions and design them for you. :) The want to know the following information: exterior wall width, desired overhang, roof pitch, truss spacing, and if you want drop gable end trusses or otherwise. I talked to several for quotes and they all were very accommodating and happy to answer my questions.
@johnson8950
@johnson8950 10 месяцев назад
If I were you and I was going to be flipping the trusses alone, I would take off the hurricane clips and put in a 2x4 stop at each truss space then when they were flipped up put a temporary 2x4 across the trusses to keep them upright and stable, then remove the 2x4 stops and attach the trusses. Doing trusses alone is not fun. Best wishes. And watch the points.
