Well here we go with the building of my new workshop.
It's taken months but I have finally got to the finished building stage.
next is an overly complex wiring scheme and moving some of my machines in.
Thats all coming up I hope you enjoy seeing how I made the building.
Cheers

19:50 “Edward the compressor”😂 brilliant pun. The problem with any shed style outdoor building in Britain, insulated or not….is moisture. Particularly over winter if the place is not heated. Come spring you decide to go back into the workshop and find all your tools have rusted. I find ferrous metals rust even if left in my closed conservatory. Ventilation is a double edged sword when the weather is bleak…Do you let all that wet air get inside or not? If you can afford to leave a heater running safely over winter that’s the best solution, but it will cost you!

I’m very similar to you, in the way that I mostly work alone and end up in situations where I’m in one place, unable to move, and the tool that I need is at the opposite end of the room, or just 2” out of my reach. Watched the whole thing. You accomplished a lot. Vertical siding is normally nailed blind through the tongue where you don't see the nail, similar to your proper explanation for your horizontal siding. But, none pf it is ever going to fall off! No lintel over the windows would get you a structural inspection failure here in Canada. But it appears that your applied beam and posts are a stop gap. Liked the wall insulation. What about the ceiling? Most of your heat loss is through your ceiling! Your plasterboard lift is a godsend indeed. I've used them enough that I bought one about 20 years ago. Best thing I ever purchased. Were about the same age. I feel your pain! Proud of you! I learned at the side of Masters. You did this all on your own. Something to be proud of. Mark
@CazualHaze
@CazualHaze Месяц назад
Cheers mark, Yep I know the siding (we call it cladding) is usually hidden nailed, truth is I got a bit trigger happy and as you say it wont fall off! The lintel is not clear from the video my building inspector made me add two lots of 180 x 50 beams over each window. They are nailed glued and screwed together and fully support the joists also the rafter ends. He was happy and so therefore I am as well. The ceiling has 150mm rockwool missed adding that on the video but it is there. I could not have done it without the plasterboard lift I hired it in, it was a bit beat up but did the job. In hindsight I would recommend anyone wanting to do this sort of thing to get a good mitre saw and a nail gun! I am proud of it so far I really needed the extra space. Visiting Canada soon meeting up with our daughter she's in Vancouver, lovely country!! Cheers

@@CazualHaze Wave as you fly past Ottawa. If you plan on looking around the Capital let me know. I'd be happy to show you around. You are 100% right on the nailer. As a young man I hammered everything. I can't do that much more than one day anymore. But that shop of yours is a days framing. We used to nail on the exterior cladding to while the wall was laying down. So much easier. Working as you did it was not so easy. You will enjoy Vancouver. It's quite different from England that's for sure. Mark

I missed it out on the video but there is 150mm rock wool in the ceiling. The windows were my biggest mistake they had to go high to make the bench that ill fit in front 900 high. So they are propping up the top wall plate. I thought that was good enough the building inspector thought differently hence the extra timber to act as a lintel. Bit of a pain as I need to do more work to fit trunking around them. Cheers

Nice build! Shame about those screws on the cladding but noone will see them, except us 😉

What a fantastic build. I want to replace an existing workshop in my garden built in the 70 or 80’s , but the building regs and having to please a building inspector is putting me off. Any chance of a video on how you found the reg. process? (Probably only of interest to people in the UK though!)

@CazualHaze Месяц назад
Hi James I would give you planners a ring as you are replacing an existing structure you may only need to make it look the same size wise! I found they were always happy to have an informal chat. Cheers

Enjoyed that. What air nailer did you use? Looked like the silverline brad nailer for the cladding and the yellow one a finishing nailer?
@CazualHaze
@CazualHaze Месяц назад
The other nailer is a 34degree framing nailer from machine mart in the uk. If you have a compressor far cheaper than a fancy battery or gas nailer. Cheers

Very impressive that you did that mostly by your self. But a couple of questions - did you insulate the ceiling ? And what about ventilation? Here we have to ventilate the attic space.
@CazualHaze
@CazualHaze Месяц назад
Hi yes the ceiling is ventilated there is a small air flow through the bargeboards into the roof. There is also 150mm rock wool up there. Cheers

Not sure how I stumbled on this video but what a build! Out of curiosity, as I’m about to do something similar, why did you decide on a timber frame and not concrete blocks? I’ve priced mine up and it’s almost half the cost using concrete blocks vs timber.

If you’d seen any brick work I have done you’d know why I went down the timber path. I hope to get 25 years out of it so should see me into my dotage. Cheers

Nice job having built many timber frame house's in my time Those long wood screws you used on the studs were not necessary
@CazualHaze

Thanks I know. I used the screws because I am worried about climate change and vastly increased wind speeds. Being a lightweight construction the lifting forces don’t need to be huge to rip it off the ground. I know its overkill cheers

I don't comment on too many videos, but I have to on yours, for several reasons. First of all, magnificent build, together with great and amusing narration. If you don't mind, I'm going to call my compressor 'Edward' from now on for reasons only the English will likely understand 😄. Like you, I'm also belt and bracers to a level of annoyance and disbelief from my Son 🙄. Finally, you haven't mentioned any security measures you will be taking, I'm hoping to see this in your next video. With the value of tools and modern DIY equipment you will probably be storing, can I suggest cameras and lights leading up to the building and on all corners, motion alarms on doors and windows, anti-climb paint on all vulnerable areas above head height, and a couple of rottweilers permanently residing inside - belt and bracers don't forget.

It’s also called OSB in ‘merica. Did you have plans prof drawn up? Very nice building. Looks exactly like the one in my head.

No professional plans I enquired but they wanted so much money I did it myself. Yep it is over made in places but I thought it’s better to put the money into the workshop not the architect! Cheers

How long did it take to get planning permission? One of the other commenters mentioned about it being none combustible by the fence. Did you only need a fireproof cladding on that side? I'd always taken it as all being that way.
@CazualHaze
@CazualHaze Месяц назад
Planning took around a month the fire resistant side is from the building inspector. It’s because the workshop is not far enough away from the fence. I left just over a meter as I thought that was enough to get a wheelbarrow through. Cheers

@@CazualHaze Bimey, a month is brilliant. We looked at moving and downsizing the house recently and applied to see if we could even get permission to rebuild the garage, but bigger. It took 3 weeks for them to decide we wouldn't get permission. At least it was cheaper than a full application, which would have taken 4-5 months. We pulled out of buying the property. What area are you in, we need to move there?

When you installed the windows you use silicon to seal the window to the cill on the outside this is incorrect. This is where drainage comes out of the window which is concealed at the bottom of the window falls onto the sill and onto the ground Nice job!
@CazualHaze
@CazualHaze Месяц назад
You are right of course, but these are recycled widows and were intended to be installed 90 degrees round or vertical. So I am hoping I don’t get too many problems, the weep vents are on the sides not the bottoms. I could pop out a window and drill through if needed. I guess we’ll see, if I get issues I will pass this on as it may help others! Cheers
