Sister Beauvier (Meryl Streep) warns Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) that she's been investigating his past by calling the nuns at his past parish.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When the principal (Meryl Streep) of a Bronx Catholic High School accuses a popular priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of pedophilia, a young nun caught in between the feuding pair becomes hopelessly swept up in the ensuing controversy. 1964, St. Nicholas, the Bronx: The winds of change are sweeping through this tight-knit religious community, and charismatic priest Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is doing his best to adapt by revisiting the school's notoriously strict disciplinary practices. Unfortunately Father Flynn's progressive ideas stand in stark contrast to the longstanding beliefs of Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the iron-willed principal, who believes that an oppressive environment of punishment and fear is the only way to keep the student body in line. Suddenly into this tempestuous environment appears young Donald Miller, St. Nicholas' first black student. When hopeful innocent Sister James (Amy Adams) reluctantly reveals to Sister Beauvier that Father Flynn and Donald have been spending an unusual amount of time together in the church rectory, the unrelentingly righteous headmistress begins a merciless crusade to reveal the beloved clergyman as a lecherous child molester and have him permanently expunged from the school. Yet despite her moral certainty that Father Flynn has committed such an unspeakable transgression, Sister Beauvier has not a shred of actual evidence to back up her audacious claim. Now, as Sister Beauvier and Father Flynn enter into an epic battle of wills, the shock waves set into motion by their explosive confrontation threaten to destroy one man's reputation and tear apart the entire surrounding community. @Brandon Smith Thank you for that perspective. I'm not Catholic and I don't know much about the religion. I didn't even consider him being in the closet. You make a convincing argument. I still think he's a pedophile. I'm gay and I was preyed upon by three different men in childhood because my parents abandoned me and pedophiles go after kids that are "lost" so to speak because they are, for lack of a better way of explaining it, the best victims because they have no adult protection. Like this guy, two of them wooed me with a level of kindness and generosity I had never experienced and as they reeled me in slowly started abusing me. I'm pretty effeminate so from kindergarten on, everyone knew I was gay. When I was 16, I joined a Baptist church thinking I could pray away the gay. Because I was alternating between my aunt and grandma's house and neither really wanted me, I took taxis everywhere. This pedophile chatted me up and told me he'd be happy to be my personal taxi. Finally, I could start saving my measly paycheck I thought. When he put his hand on my thigh one day after picking me up from school and then grabbed my hand, I realized that the only men who were kind and generous to obviously gay boys are predators. All of my uncles except the one who molested me treated me like a leper, as did most straight men until about thirtyish.

Streep lost because Kate Winslet was nominated in her category for The Reader (a completely Oscar-worthy performance but a category fraud, she was campaigned in supporting for all award shows except the Oscars), Adams and Davis lost to Penelope Cruz, it was a tough call between the three but in my opinion Penelope had the stronger performance, and well, Hoffman lost to Heath Ledger which was one of the best performances recorded on cinema.

@@aameyadevansh4246 I love Cruz as an actress(her performances in Volver and Parallel Mothers are 10/10) but GODDAMN you are DEAD wrong about her being better than Adams and ESPECIALLY Davis. Viola should have won that. They awarded Cruz for her worst performance. Also LOL, Winslet in The Reader is one of the last things I would call "Oscar worthy". It was average. Both her 2008 turns are arguably the worst performances of her career. Agree about Ledger.

if you watch just this clip alone and out of context it seems over the top, but if you've watched the rest of the film first and felt the build up of tension it doesn't stick out as over the top at all.

Hon Ey Oh, I don't think so. She was so firm in her faith that when she slams down the crucifix, it feels like, just as she says, 'The gates can close behind me when I'm damned to hell.' Pretty powerful stuff. I'd have a meltdown too if I were in that situation.

His acting was superb. He played a cop in 'Nobody's Fool', a goofy storm chaser in 'Twister', a blunt has been child actor kn 'Along Came Polly', Capote, this priest, a smarmy guy in 'Boogie Nights'. He was wonderful in all of these. He became these people.

I think that’s exactly what John Patrick Shanley (writer/director) intended. He wrote the play after the pedophile priest scandal broke, so he knew it was not only real, but worse than imagined. What he’s saying isn’t “Those poor priests could have been innocent” or “What a witch hunt”, but “Look at how the Church enabled pedophiles for decades”. Sr. Aloysius never waivers on Fr. Flynn’s guilt. Her doubts are about the faith and hierarchy she’s a part of.

Father Flynn is using Sister Aloysius's greatest fears against her. He's bringing up things she told him in confession. She's scared that in pursuing the world's monsters, she's lost her faith and her hope of salvation. He threatens her outright with excommunication and Purgatory. You can see, deep down, how terrified she is, standing defiantly in the face of religious authority and perhaps God Himself. She's resolute despite truly believing and trembling at the thought that maybe the gates of Heaven are closing before her.

There's a particularly savvy in that when she said "I will step outside the church if that's what needs to be done, 'til the _door_ should shut behind me! I will do what needs to be done, though I'm damned to Hell!" The door was a reference to the gates of heaven. Even though she believes going after the predator will cost her her own salvation, she still chose to go against the odds to persecute the priest for being a molester. Even if he taunted her about her own mortal sins, she didn't falter. I hope there are a lot of people like her in the world who has the courage to fight abuse in spite of her own doubts and mistakes

The movie ends ambiguously on purpose. The playwright said he didn't want it to be clear, he wanted to leave the audience with doubt. He was never "proven innocent."

You know what I love about this movie? It's not dull, or preachy. It's surprisingly nerve-wracking, and it doesn't spell anything out for you. I love stories like that, where there's a constant blur .

Of course this priest is guilty. But that's not the point of the story at all. The sister's 'doubt' is why she had to move so far away from God and the teachings of the Church, to stalk her prey like an animal. That's why she weeps at the movie's end -- she caught her prey, but he wasn't even punished. And she's not even sure of her own religious beliefs anymore. Obviously stupendous acting by everyone. And Streep deserved an Oscar for this role much more than her turn as Margaret Thatcher.

In an interview with the author of the play he said that the overall theme is supposed to be the destructive power of certainty. So yes she may have caught her pray, but at great cost, and still there is no way to really know if he was guilty as he never properly confessed.

Denver Britto If you have a moment, look up Shanley’s recent interviews about the opera, ‘Doubt,’ which he wrote based on the same story. He makes it very clear that Flynn is guilty, and that the younger nun doesn’t believe his excuses either. The concept of doubt was that ‘Sister Streep’ betrayed her beliefs and vows while catching him.

At first, I was in doubt but it's clear as day that he's guilty. When she threatened to go to his other parishes, he got so worked up. If he was so certain he was clean, he wouldn't have been so upset at that. Also the question he asked if she had never sinned just sealed the deal. He knew he was caught and was trying to gain sympathy from her.

I can never make my mind either way I think that is a valid interpretation he doesn’t to be exposed for abusing boys but on the other hand considering the social stigma homosexuality had at the time he may have also been trying to avoid being outed if someone had found out for whatever reason at another parish and agreed to keep quiet if he left. Similarly he could be trying to manipulate her sympathy for abuse but he also could have been appealing that everyone has “sin” struggle they with and for that reason we be careful how we judge/treat another eg he who is without sin let him cast the first stone. I think that’s makes this film so compelling how messy it.

the point is not whether or not he did it-it was purposefully constructed to be ambiguous. Father Flynn did not "do it" or not, thats not how the play was constructed. The beauty behind it is why its ambiguous. Its the clash between Aloysius's faith that Flynn did it yet her lack of proof. It almost serves as a metaphor for their religious natures if you think about it. The doubt itself is the essence of the play, not whether or not he did or did not molest the boy.

@IfYouDisagreeYouAreWrong You're an dolt. I'm not even religious and just because faith requires belief, does not mean it's all a scam. I am spiritual in a sense. Open to many things actually like everyone should be. And I believe in all science, which is why I know some of science is also faith. Trying to explain why gravity doesn't behave like it should in space is one examples of faith. Another is how everything even began. There are many theories. None fact. You want to try and understand, go deep into some quantum physics. No one has the answers, everything requires some faith.

Usually there is that one standout scene in a movie where you just are blown away and say OSCAR,,,in The Hours it was the train station scene and in Doubt it was this scene right here unfortunately Meryl didnt win like Nicole did

Jo Nathan You're quite right. Shanley wrote an opera in recent years of the same story. He said he needed to make it clearer that the priest was guilty and the sister had him pegged all along. But in trying to catch him, she lost her faith in the church and even in God. So she's left at the end with nothing. That's the doubt -- was it worth it??

My deal with the priest is that while he defended himself or worded himself around what was being directed at him, he never gave us a reason not to suspect that he did anything wrong. This scene proves it too, because he gets bent all out of shape and doesn't come clean on whatever he may have done. It didn't even have to be with Donald. Just the fact that he has Meryl on his tail the way he does, makes him very uncomfortable if he is living an alternative lifestyle, and Donald unfortunately in the priest's case was the catalyst that started all the problems for him. She said this was his third parish within the last five years. I wonder why? Perhaps similar things happened back at the other two. Like someone else said, if the pastor is gay he will naturally cover for him, while a nun who may have been similar to Meryl's character would have told her everything. Either way, we as the audience will never get a clear picture on what happened, hence the title "Doubt", but I still think he did something. If not he wouldn't have also mentioned 'Mortal sins' like someone else mentioned. That could be confirming he did something wrong to the boy, or he himself is living a foul life. Or he used that on Meryl to make her see that despite what he may or may not have done, she is not perfect either.

I never thought the story was about Flynn's guilt. I thought he was guilty from the get-go. I thought it was how far Sister A had strayed from the Church to catch him. Her breakdown: she won, but really lost, she had strayed so far from God. And Flynn got a promotion anyway. Shanley, who wrote the story and new opera libretto, says that Sister James, while agreeing with Flynn in his plea for innocence, is actually betrayed by music that suggests just the opposite. She doesn't believe him at all.
