Doug McKnight: Slingblade Spoonfly free fly tying video tutorial
Doug puts the weight on in this heave multi purpose fly.
Livingston tier and guide Doug McKnight hails originally from Pensylvania, but now lives in Livingston, MT. Doug began tying flies at age 9 under his father’s instruction along with a few instructional books. In 2003, Umpqua Feather Merchants signed him up as a signature fly tyer, and you can buy his unique fly patterns in fly shops around the world. In 2010, Fly Fisherman Magazine published a streamer- tying article written by Doug that was very well received. He continues to write for regional and national publications. Doug McKnight, in recent years, has been working on his fine art of oil paintings, pastels and pen and pencil drawings. Doug’s art is carefully rendered and his meticulous nature lends itself towards recreating beautiful and accurate images with emphasis on the angler’s world.
Doug works at Yellow Dog Fly Fishing in addition to his personal creative work.

You have mad skillz working that epoxy! I saw a guy use plastic spoons, coat the inside of the spoon with epoxy, add a piece of mylar, and take another plastic spoon and clamp it down to thin the epoxy spoon until it dries.

Very cool , have never tied a spoon fly . I like the way you manipulate the epoxy into the wire to form the spoon . Looks pretty easy once you get the hang of shaping the spoon . Nice :--)

Now I'll have to try that. I never thought the epoxy would stay in the form, thanks for showing it can. Have you tried making spoon flies with artificial finger nails like Fishy Fullum does? Thanks for the tutorial, now i'll have the check out Doug's art work too.

Could you mix the sparkle into the epoxy instead of “shaking” it onto the epoxy (like you demonstrated)?

Have U try to use cellofan paper to hold epoxy (glue it) and then apply the epoxy on the opposite side?

I’m not a snob about flies , I don’t mind foam or mop flies or anything like that(I use them all). If you can tie it to a hook and cast it on a fly rod it’s a fly. BUT for some reason this just doesn’t seem right to me. If I really needed to fish a spoon I’ll use a spinning rod. Forgive my new found snobbishness. The technique with the wire as a frame for the epoxy body is super cool though!

Fact is these spoons catch fish...its a go to many times I am on the water in SE Louisiana.

Sometimes it’s not practical to carry every rod you own. I may be in a situation where I’m fly fishing, and a spoon bite would produce. So I can switch spools if I want to a sink and throw a spoon on a faster retrieve.
