THE ALAMO'S MUSICAL DUEL - February 28, 1836 - Susannah Dickinson's eyewitness accounts of the Alamo siege are the most heavily relied upon source of information regarding the last days of the Alamo defenders. Although most of her stories were tragically somber, she did have a joyful tale to tell from Day 6 of the siege. According to Dickinson, Davy Crockett took it upon himself to raise the morale of the men and he decided that the best way to do so was by challenging John McGregor to a musical duel of instruments. McGregor, a Scotsman by birth, took up his bagpipes while Crockett took up his fiddle. They played back and forth, loudly enough for the Mexican soldiers to hear - and they created one of the most legendary moments in Texas history. It is said that McGregor won the duel because he was able to play the loudest and the longest. And Texas urban legend claims that the Mexican soldiers coined the term "gringo" after hearing the men singing "Green Grow the Rushes Oh". While these stories have undoubtedly grown and been embellished throughout the years, the heart of the tale is based in fact and it was undoubtedly one of the few happy moments for the beleaguered Alamo defenders during their ordeal.

My college professor explained the song/poem to the class. Robert Burns says the sweetest days he ever had were spend with Lasses(women). Some men find happiness in money but those men are Asses. Lol. This was/is an awesome song.

So lovely that I can listen and watch on a loop. Being French I can just try and guess the meaning of the Scottish words, so I should be very grateful if anyone could give me the English translation of these words.
The words were writren by the Scottish poet Robbie Burns. The songs words explain how almost every good thing in this world has come from the hands of women. He tries to convey that mother nature practiced creating a human on man and perfected it with a woman and that of all the time he spent on earth, the best of those times was when he was in the company of women.

I knew nothing about this song/poem until yesterday when i was looking for Green Grow the Rushes O, a different much older song/poem. Did Robert Burns write this or was it his version of something traditional? Its not the tune I imagined going with it, which is not faulting Dougie's performance in any way, I just imagined it differently. Did Robert Burns imagine it as a tune or just a poem?

This is a very profound statement and a long essay could be written about it. I think 'rashes' is the Scottish pronunciation of 'rushes' (like grasses). The line implies the passage of time and the song has the feeling of an old man at the end of his life looking back on his achievements and reflecting on what is important. In this respect, it is a very sad moment. However, life goes on, the grass will contine to grow and there is hope for the future if one remains optimistic and focuses on the good things in life. That to me is the starting point. It is also, of course, a tribute to women who are, among many other things, the miracle through which life does go on from one generation to the next. To say this in such a simple song with a great sing-along chorus is the work of true genius and Robert Burns is rightly regarded as one of the greatest poets of all time.
Very much your opinion. I'm neither Scots nor irish but I love this song. I listened to Marra's version - a boring, off-key dirge. Just my opinion of course.
