Douglas begins speaking at the 10:00 mark.
Douglas Murray is a best-selling author, an award-winning political commentator, and a senior fellow at the National Review Institute. He has written books on neoconservatism, terrorism and national security, freedom of speech, and the rise of woke culture and identity politics. His upcoming book, The War on the West: How to Prevail in the Age of Unreason, explores why in recent history it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating the West’s contributions is condemned as hate speech.

This man is exceptional in distilling what he has seen around the world and most recently, here in the US. I was struck by his closing statements about our great country and our role (and responsibility) in the world -- If we get this wrong the world will be in trouble, if we get it right the world will be OK.... In my experience it's been that way since WWII, but perhaps never so critical as right now. I am increasingly grateful that we have Douglas Murray in the public discourse at this critical juncture in American and world history.

I am from Denmark. I know most of America has been told this place is great, that its already "free of restrictions". First of all they are now coming back, secondly the amount of unrestrained POWER that the government now have over us, pending a simple majority vote in parliament, is staggering. Third of all - our government has already broken our Constitutional law (yes, we have one) in several instances and are also regarded as incredibly authoritarian. A whole new subculture of anti-governmental podcasts have sprung up as a result. So how? Tyranny of the majority. Here is what I mean: A full third of our entire nation is employed by the state, yes you read that right, secondly there is the very large and growing part of the population that is old, unemployed or disabled or something and therefor dependent on the government in many ways, even to live in many cases. They are incentivized accordingly. The fact that it is also the old and weak, dependent on the government and subsidized by the government are also the people most afraid of the virus is just its own amazing problem - its almost perfect for central power: A population in fear, with such a large voter-base that are that directly dependent on the government to exist ...economically or otherwise - that much fear can suddenly mean: "The ends justify the means" and it has already happened in a few cases...like the mink case (you can google that, so you are free of me giving you a biased article - make your own judgement) - 2 wolves and 1 sheep vote about whats for dinner tonight. If America does not work itself out, I have nowhere to run to and they are already having talks in terms of "Oh look how fashionable Austria is being"...I think the adoption-rate is low but the idea was still floated and they already shown they are willing to go very far, they have already shown they will act with force against its own population and take control over peoples lives - they operate increasingly on this idea. This is a hellish place for individual rights. Granted at this point our own society has started questioning things too but...well its all wrong. I have so many things I could tell you about this place. Please wake America up, please. We need you.

That bit right at the very end, about education. Such a lovely thing to hear that bristle in Douglas Murray's voice. Tens, if not dozens of millions of kids in the English speaking world are being ripped off of perhaps the most valuable thing they may ever possess: a good education. The kind that swings open the doors to an open mind, a greater understanding, a love of learning, a boundless curiosity and ability to value what is actually beautiful about the world. And that's hardly even a brief notion skimming the surface, compared to the depth that resides there. They're being ripped off. Knowing how they're ripped off is important. Knowing why they are ripped off more important still. Knowing the results of this going forward, practically priceless. Because that third one there - provides the indictment on the entire profession that considers a thing like pigmentation, or what resides between the legs, or vague notions of navel-gazed identitarianism to be far more important than actually imparting any sort of skills required to bestow upon a scholar some semblance of perspective and actual knowledge. This is one hell of a thing to steal from a person. It is one hell of a thing to steal from young people. Which is why I spit on the ground before their pathetic efforts to prove to me that they actually care. They don't care. How could they possibly care? They are denying the one greatest thing that could cause the pulling back of the curtain and revealing the Wizard at work spinning out mischief. My 'troubled' childhood was eased enormously by one simple thing: my ability to get out of myself, to get over myself, to become amazed and focused on an endless list of things that required full concentration and focus. Which causes one to forget many of the things they are unable to do anything about really, for the moment. So one gets on. These dozens of millions are now seen as incapable of such a thing? Hell. I was an average child. A regular boy. Nothing special at all. So I don't buy this argument. Illiteracy should have become that ten-foot high banner on every BLM protester poster. The why of it. It should have been front and center. It should have mattered. It should not have been yet again buried beneath and behind another soft parade of lousy reasons to own a "Get Out of School Free" card. Because illiteracy is like 50, or 60, or 70 years of slow death by a brain's drowning. Thinking that this is not true, or not the case, is like being wrapped up in fishing lines or kite tails of delusion. There is no flying free, moving to that far horizon. There is just the spinning of a manipulated top. A child's toy. A failure to mature. I could go on about this all day, and sometimes feel moved to when inspired by comments such as Mr. Murray's. I think the fact that it is not front and center speaks volumes.

@joyfulsavage9905
@joyfulsavage9905 2 года назад
Yep the Right is founded in better principles but that's not hard considering the Left doesn't have any. As Ronald Reagan said, "I'd like to suggest that there is no right or left, but only an up or a down." Dont kid yourselves thinking that it's "Morally Ok" to ever take another persons property and "redistribute" it. The only moral starting framework is voluntarism/anarchy. This means NO RULERS, NO SLAVES. Otherwise, continue to live out of touch with NATURAL LAW which the Creator put in place here and watch the laws of Karma continually destroy this planet. The psychopathic controllers want to keep this "Left vs Right" fight going and they only need 1 side to play into it to keep the pendulum swinging forever. Cheers.
@ggrthemostgodless8713
@ggrthemostgodless8713 2 года назад
It's better if we talk of right and wrong, "better than" this or that, if something is right or wrong that is a discussion of degrees, not perfection, but improvements on the issues or topics, and it works better if people who take a party poetic line are willing to "improve" their view or how they do things if a new better idea or improvement is presented to them, and NOT consider if the person is of the right or left and automatically dismiss it. Most give lip service to this idea, but never can put it, apply it, in practice.

I love Douglas' quote of several years ago, that the further right the electorate vote, the further left the politicians run. Well said on John Oliver, a very original and hilarious comedian when he was gigging around the UK and appearing on panel shows, he went to the States and was initially great there too, I'd actively look forward to Last Week Tonight appearing on YT, but bit by bit he traded clever, insightful humour for trotting out the same tired lines about the same predictable targets and his items started being obviously, deliberately biased in one very specific direction by clear omission and in some cases, being deeply disingenuous. I'm happy to laugh at jokes that target people I support if it's clever and at least vaguely honest but when it's all one way and lacking in any honour or original wit it's just not entertaining. I guess it's mainly down to the script writers, maybe he has no editorial control at all, but his show sure sucks these days. I gave up perhaps a year ago, I can't bear to watch it at all these days.

I like Murray a lot, I learned of him through Roger Scruton. I take issue, however, with his assertion that we need to agree on a shared history. We aren't a nation but a republic and a republic formed originally by divergent cultures of the British Isles. I also will now sacrifice my heritage to appease the vast unwashed, as my ancestors were at Jamestown in the early 17th century, in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution, and with the Confederate Army in the mid 19th century. I think, by 'shared history' he meant, 'agree on history and our foundational values' (meaning, we must have a common value structure, more so in the context of the history [nation] itself). One simple way to understand this is to look at the two big groups in America at the moment. One side thinks that America was found in 1776, and the other thinks it was not. It's pretty simple. America was founded in 1776, and this is a key, shared history that must be supported. At least, I assume this is what he means going by your comment (I am not at that part in the video yet, so I could be wrong).
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr 2 года назад
@@TheClassicWorld America as in its status as a sovereign country was not founded in 1776, but 1781 with the ratification of the Articles of Confederation. 1776 did not establish the United States so much as the colonies that decided to cooperate issued a document of secession. The value systems that the various colonies held (how liberty and freedom are defined differed and they had been rooted in the time and types of people that settled from different cultures of the British Isles). See 'Albion's Seed', David H. Fischer. The Declaration of Independence is a secession document not a foundational document. That is a later Straussian reinterpretation of history.

@@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr Wouldn't the Declaration be best considered as an outline of moral intent, that the Constitution expanded upon in detail how the ideals outlined were to be put into practice(law)? I'm inclined to take the Declaration at its word, because it starts out with, “We hold these truths to be self-evident..........”, a bold statement, and mostly they did, according to the archived communications. I think Jefferson was setting up an ideal that the nation would have to live up to. “All men are created equal” would force us to civil war in order to live up to that particular principle. I don't care if half the country differed on that opinion myself, because their difference was that slavery was a “good institution”. Has to be a founding document though, in my classification scheme, if it has that type of influence. Also, we do not need to forget, that the US founding was the first ever philosophical founding of a nation, and the DoI is written like a philosophical treatise in a way. I believe in their context, the founders meant for it to be just as revered as the constitution. What do you think of this?
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr 2 года назад
@@phillip3495 That's very Struassian of you. No, equality before the law is the goal but equality in all aspects of life is not. Almost no if not any members of the foundation generation believed in absolute equality, even Jefferson exalted the 'natural aristocracy'. It was a document of secession and not a 'national founding' document. There was no guarantee that the newly independent states would ratify either the Articles or the Constitution. The US is *supposed* to be a voluntary compact of states.
@phillip3495
@phillip3495 2 года назад
@@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr Well, I left out the entire declaration complete with its context for brevity. What I did type, leaves no loophole for “Actual Egalitarianism”. It states that, “All men are created equal”. What I take it to mean, is that nobody is “intrinsically” more valuable at their birth than the next. Because there are no deeds yet by which to judge. The implication is that the state should treat everyone this way. Not, like babies :}, but as equal between one another. No state favoritism. It is hard to get “equality of outcome” from reading the DoI. I mean logically impossible. Just adding. My view on the DoI is that it is revealing as the first attempt to found a nation on scientific principles and ethics(morality). If you isolate all the essential sentences, you get a lot of politically advanced concepts concentrated in one document. The most powerful of which is the binding and shackling of the state, into the role of guardian of every individual right to life. This simple principle covers many many possible violations of rights that can occur, and makes the "bill of rights" or any specifically spelled out alternate rights, redundant. This sets colorblindness as the standard for the state's interactions with the public. The public is not a collection of "race groups" or "Economic Classes" or "particular creeds". A collection of "Individuals". The concept is nondiscriminatory in its very essence. Exactly what the state should be. Except against people initiating violence. See, the declaration was the outline for how a constitution would be built when they got around to it. Like when you're in a hurry, and you have to take a note, but don't have time to be detailed, so you just shorthand summarize it until you can properly handle it later. On the “right to life”, or the only right that can be derived logically from axiomatic principles and status as such is the only right that exists. Private property is a corollary of this primary right, for example. I'm aware that after “Birth/Creation”(distinction doesn't really matter), that all people begin their divergences in value. I'm certain I did not advocate “full equality” with anything I typed. You never go “full equality.” Hell.....early 20th century, Cambodia, Pol Pot. Went “full equality”. Went home empty-handed.” Also, killed like 1/3 of their population. I'll entertain the notion of “Voluntary Compact of States”. They all voluntarily signed in from each state, didn't they? To Federalize or not is probably the key issue you're referring. Tell me if I'm wrong. I can talk about US founding principles for years.

Jesus was born in the Roman Empire. They allowed pretty unfettered travel for its citizens and people born within its borders. If you came from outside the empires borders, especially with large numbers and seemingly hostile intent then that was completely different. Not controlling its borders is one of the major reasons Rome fell.

And when Rome fell to the Barbarians, the Barbarians were already living inside the gates of the city. Nor were they refugees, but economic migrants.

I read Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind in the early 1990s. I bought it in a really sumptuous Penguin edition. I felt at that time that I was reading a very powerful and insightful analysis of what was happening then and what would continue to happen. I find it strange that in these times I never hear Bloom's name mentioned or his work cited. I lent my copy of the book to a friend and never got it back and I have never since then found another copy of the book in a bookshop, even though I have spent a lot of time browsing in bookshops between then and now.

Thank You! I've thought the same regarding Alan Bloom. Even commentary on Jonathan Haight's book, which almost steals the title (Coddling of the American Mind), never has any mention of it. I stumbled across that book 20 yrs ago and still refer back to it. It was my education into what thinkers I ought to know and has been a traveling companion ever since. I hope someday you find a replacement copy, friend.

Claremont Institute writers such as Michael Anton, and Dave Reaboi refer to this book. It is only ignored in the vast wasteland that is ignorant. It was a seminal work, and as you say, should be dusted off and rediscovered more broadly.

They didn't vote FOR biden. It was ANYONE BUT TRUMP. If idi amin had been running they'd have voted for him! I worked with some and I have family here who did. They arent happy now! I just sit and smile and say... well, be careful what you wish for. I can tell you, having come from the industrial heartland of England, there us only ONE thing that will cure them if it. And that is, making them LIVE WITH IT. Then like any other disease, they'll get sick, they'll suffer, theyll recover, and they'll be immune. But the pain must come first. I lived through it a long time ago. It was miserable. Look up the 3 day week in England. I can only tell you, that you will survive, the country will survive, and you as a nation will be cured. But it won't happen tomorrow. And that senile old fool DID win. Not because he's any good, but because he wasn't trump. My mother in law ADMITS his policies were good, but she saud she won't vote for him if he runs again. Thats what you are up against. They gotta learn the hard way and we all have to suffer with them. Hopefully, as you get midterms here, it'll be short lived and their wings will be clipped.

@@boudecia22 Love your YT name. I hope they never tear down that inspiring statue of Boudecia with her chariot. And thank you for your perspective on Trump and Biden. I have no doubt of what you are saying, although it is very clear that there was a concerted effort, beginning with illegally changing election rules and “ fortifying” the election through private illegal means, through counting ballots that mysteriously appeared after counting had stopped in the middle of the night. No question there was a lot of fraud, carefully targeted in key cities in swing states. Will we ever know ? Not likely, and it will remain a scar and a matter of dispute that will be forever unresolved. Even as an American, I remember the three day work weeks in Britain, due to the miner’s strikes, and the downward spiral of what was once a great country. It took the election of Margaret Thatcher to turn the course around. Yet when she died, the Left had taken over the media and led the vituperation against her. It was so sad. It will require the full measure of the failure of the Biden Administration and the policies of the Left to educate the sheep on the inevitable outcomes of voting for a party so taken over by irrationally. It will also require the destruction of the Media which is the impediment for truth being revealed. This has been evident in the Rittenhouse trial. Most of what people think they know about Trump has been relentlessly shaped by the Media, beginning with the Charlottesville protest, where the false narrative of Trump the Racist was promulgated. Until the Media are broken or enough people are clued into how they are being manipulated, fundamental change in people’s understanding of how they were persuaded to accept lies will not occur. I hope we can recover from this. The policies of world wide unsustainable government debt, the rise of a hostile China truly having a US president under its thumb, and the transfer of so much of our manufacturing of essential goods to this hostile power are quite different than what Britain faced in the 70s. I hope we can pass through this period without outright war with China. If makes no sense for them to instigate it, but that rationality has never stopped war making in the past. I pray all the world gets through the next few years in a salvageable condition. Best to you ~
