Dove Hunting 2020 limiting out on opening day in Cotulla, TX. The first two Saturday’s & Sunday’s of September are two special White Wing Weekends of 2020. They’re both afternoon hunts only with special laws to preserve the species. The Wide Open crew travels to Cotulla, TX in September 2020 to hunt White Wing Dove with Dan Meaux owner of the Crawfish Shack in Crosby, TX. The outfitter for today’s show is Dave’s great friend Mike Divin out of Tilden, TX. The backdrop is the Texas scrub brush and dark red sand in the big field with a tremendous amount of doveweed. Dave gets a chance to hunt also with Dan’s daughter Micah. The birds come over in small groups on Opening Day. They weren’t very high but they weren’t very consistent as well so it seemed like every 15-20m you’d get some action but then it slack off until the next wave came by. Sometimes the hunting is very slow until about 5:30pm and then they come over in big numbers basically coming back into town from eating. Today that wasn’t the case, nothing was happening and then all of a sudden, here they come. And oftentimes very quickly they’d come from the West going into town. So you just set up waiting for them coming from that direction. But today they seemed to come from all directions. Oftentimes one of us would look to the south and the other, to the north. And we’d clue each other - “Dave incoming birds” and I’d spin around and we'd both work that group of birds. So we worked as a team. Oftentimes, we’d hear some gun reports from across the field and we knew they were shooting and maybe we can clean up any birds they missed if they came over. There is a lot of technique in shouldering a shotgun and shooting with both eyes open and how much lead to leave the birds and what chokes to have in your shotgun and actually choosing shotgun shells for the hunt can make a difference too.
