Guns are blazing on today’s Wide Open Sportsman. We traveled to Uvalde Texas to hunt with Events Unlimited. I hunted with Barrett and I got a chance to meet Cooper, a German Shorthair Pointer. Cooper was trained to hunt with other people. Not just his owner and that’s unusual because the dog is typically loyal to one person. His master.

Cooper did really well and we had an awesome hunt and we provided a lot of tips to help you knock down more birds. It all starts with the appropriate stance, how to shoulder a shotgun, holding point with a rifle and a killshot for the rifle as well.
You want to definitely keep the barrel swinging through the shot and adjust the lead on how far the birds are from you and how fast they’re flying. Nothing to it. Just kidding. There is a true art to bird hunting. Never stop learning. Just get out there.

That Uvalde show was one I'll never forget. A lot of people worked to make that show possible. The dog Cooper was provided by a professional dog handler and guide. Cooper was amazing and Barrett Rambie of Events Unlimited held that primo spot at the end of the river/creek. For our video shoot it was definitely one of my top bird hunting days ever. Glad you liked it.

The most heart-warming thing about hunting doves and other game with a gun is having a well-trained, loyal and loving K9 companion afield. The hunting dog is important for the conservation of game and the dog can even let you know if birds are coming in case you did not see them of hear them yourself. I am troubled by all these dove hunting videos I see this day and age without the employment or retrieving dogs afield. About 33% of shot doves are never recovered. Humans do not have a dog's keen senses to find birds in cover. There is a serious waste problem. Dogs solve this problem for the most part. I like the notion of hunting with dogs for just old-fashioned charm. No, I don't want to spend time and energy combing through a sunflower or corn field for one or more dropped birds. There might be snakes hiding out there. The only "boy" I might have is a male Lab or golden. A retriever, K9 type, can also swim. Doves popped on the wing can and do fall into watering holes. Poison ivy....another good reason for a K9 in the dove field!
