At the end, when you were describing the other benefits to having the hole in drilled in your workbench, I realized that it could be really useful for cleaning up your workbench. To your point, the downdraft really only works for finer dust. If you had larger chips or shavings from using, say, a router or a handplane on your workbench, presumably, you could just sweep the chips in the bin with the shop vac turned on. Seems like it would make clean-up a lot easier!

This is brilliant - I'm using an old formica kitchen counter as my workbench, and I got tired of the sink (which I realized I'm never plumbing in), so I just removed it and blanked it off with a scrap piece of MDF. Your insert solves 2 problems: controlling wood & metal dust in the room and making a flush counter.(I'll just have to glue up some cleats underneath to attach it.) Thanks!

you could take a carpet with rubber underneath and cut it into strips or cut out a few squares that the dust goes away. That way the workpiece won't slide around when sitting on top of the carpet. PS I really like watching your videos.

@iceman22st
@iceman22st 9 лет назад
I just found your channel yesterday, and now you're quitting? Did I do that? Just kidding. I noticed the way you do the plunge cuts, and must say, it's dangerous! You should always do a plunge cut with the blade adjusted to just penetrate the wood you're cutting, and you should always start with the front of the shoe against the surface. The way you do it has a good chance of kickback. Love your work.

Great video! Just curious why you reset the table saw to cut each side of the 18 x 18 inch panels?
@Iliketomakestuff
@Iliketomakestuff 9 лет назад
Chuck Leinweber Ah, keen eye! My box was actually 18"x18 1/8" because of a dumb mistake concerning the framing of my table. It didn't seem worthwhile to try to explain that in the video, as it wouldn't apply to anyone else hopefully.

Thanks a lot! Great video, well explained! Any thoughts on what might be the optimal hole sizes here? I'm about to make a downdraft area in my workbench and I'd like the holes to big enough to catch dust from sawing as well as maybe shavings from hand planing etc, but still not so large that screws etc fall into it. I'm thinking 15-18 mm holes. Any comments?

Hi Bob. I cant tell how much I enjoy your channel. I am an avid fan of all the stuff you make and inspires me a lot. Unfortunately I live in a tiny apartment in NY and I dont have any place for any tools. All I own is a drill and an electric stapler. I understand that I can get all the wood precut to dimensions etc from any stores like HomeDepot but for a total amateur like me and who was brought up in a home, where everything I touched was made of expensive wood like Teak, Rosewood etc, I lack the understanding of millions of options that are available. When I saw MDF at my local hardware store, it appeared weak and I did not like it so much. Could you please do a video explaining the various materials and their pros and cons that you regularly use. People like me would really appreciate that. Oh btw, you can find a simple haptic system I built several years ago in my channel.
@drn1023

Just found your page. Love it. An additional use for this box would be to get a piece of 1/4" Plexi or safety glass either to fit or in a frame to fit. One of the small LED hand held spotlights inside the box and you've got a light table.

SUGGESTION… use the peg board as a guide for drilling larger holes with greater but consistent spacing. These can double for bench dog/hold downs/jigs and down draft. With the 1/4in center drill bit on an appropriately sized hole saw, you can quickly layout a grid… using two layers of material (your choice) or even scrap LVL you can find in a job site dumpster you get a solid top that does both work and dust abatement!
@thewhistlerswoodshop5897
@thewhistlerswoodshop5897 9 лет назад
I used to run a Slitter, a machine that cuts gigantic rolls of paper into smaller rolls of paper. The splice board was made of two downdraft boxes to hold the paper in place while you removed scrap and put in the splice. There were also some clamps and a cutting groove... anyhow, a downdraft table can be used to hold things in place. If you place paper that naturally wants to curl on that box it will lay flat. It can come in handy where you might otherwise need tape, but you don't want to use tape. I had not considered using it as part of the dust collector. That is a great idea! Bill

Thank you for this video, I had plan to turn a portable desk/TV tray into my work station and I am planning on fitting a in take box in it, kind of like you did with your table. Only issue no supports, so I was thinking of just using straps to hold it into place, so that when time comes I can remove the box fold everything back up and put the box back in when I have finished using it. My problem, I am just starting out so no scrape wood, no table saw to cut anything down to size. I plan to make it 10"x 10" X 2", any suggestions? Yes this will be used in a very small place, I even plan to make sides to it to help contain the dust.
@ryanomalley8201
@ryanomalley8201 5 лет назад
Why would you start a plunge cut off the back of the circsaw? Line your marks up with the clearly marked and often notched FRONT side main shoe, an plunge from front-down. You’re dangerous and teaching other to be dangerous.

So to be clear for this complete newbie: a table like this is sufficient enough that I do not need a dust mask, correct? Even in a small room? I mean, it seems logical that zero dust would escape into the air, especially dangerous particulates. I just need to hear it said outright before I embark on this remodel (for power carving wood in my case). Thank you (I could just buy an air hockey table and turn the fan around HAHA)

I like it. I have a downdraft box I created using the Rockler panels they sell and their free plan. It works out great for sanding nut an unexpected benefit is when I need to do something larger I set the box on its edge and it collects dust as I sand to the side of it. But I was just thinking recently I would like to have one in my bench top, under my lathe, and one under my scroll saw. Thanks for the reminder :-)

@NoCoolNamesRemain
@NoCoolNamesRemain 9 лет назад
I hate to criticize but doing a plunge cut with a circular saw _in that way_ is very dangerous. The saw can very easily ride back out of the cut and towards you! If you want to make this type of cut place the *front*, never the back, of the saws table on the work-piece and hold it there firmly while plunging.

I built one from your idea. It works great but only covers a small area. I then went to my work bench where my tabletop sanders are located. I put 1/2 holes in a 2" grid pattern and set it up to receive my shopvac. It works great, but I have to sweep some dust across the top. It greatly cut down on airborne dust and sped up the clean up to a few seconds! Thanks!
