✅ In This Video
Fulltime RV-ers Liz and Paul share what's not so great about living on the road in a camper. If you are thinking about living in your travel trailer, motorhome or fifth wheel fulltime, here are some things to consider.
1:07 Mail issues: sending and receiving letters, packages, supplies and replacement parts, etc.
2:30 Realise all the things you have to give up. Due to lack of space. Hobbies like sewing, mechanics, etc.
3:28 Laundry
5:03 Constantly in close contact.
7:02 Rent an RV and spend a week or two to see if you really fo like.
10:18 Lack of community, friends, Internet, Cell Service, television and Cablevision. Sometimes you have too much solitude and you will get lonely.

We had our onboard generator go down on us and we were told it would cost $2000 just to remove it and look @ it. We ended up getting one from Lowes and with the COVID-19 we all have had some very unexpected costs. (My hubby used to work on Agri buggies and equipment so he had already gone through the simple things.)

Well, we have a lot of kitchen stuff: iron skillets, a massive blender, coffee grinder and a a bunch of tools- and that's just Paul! I have professional cameras, tripods, a drone, a lounger, a mixer, baking pans, we definitely do NOT travel light! But at least now have a rig plenty big to accommodate.

I would recommend a portable washing machine and spin dryer. They are very small a load can take 5-10 mins and you hook it up to your sink. 😊

I had one worked great, I kept it outside near the water hook up. But if you have space, I have and suggest you think about getting a washer and dryer set . It makes a difference, you can wash 2 towels and 2 sets of clothes ( not jeans) . It can be 15 min quick wash, 30 for a load as above and 2 sheets pillow cases and 1 towel, I like to be very specific on how and what I wash, but the key is you can do washing and drying at the same time. Get your life back, and no nasty dryer lint or moldy washers, and the cost. You can adjust the spin cycle accordingly to your load. You won’t be sorry

I bought as pandemic was setting in. Works great on kitchen counter, and is quite durable. I skipped the spin drying function on washer in favor of stand-alone spin dryer, very sturdy type, and line dry afterwards. Once every 3 months or so I bring big things like sheets and blankets and kitchen towels that might be greasy to a very clean and modern laundromat with wifi. Amazon has great reviews on some of these items which are quite detailed with advice/how-to-use, I had my doubts but it is a great system. I use this in small residence now but am eyeing the RV life as well after the pandemic, and expect to continue to use these.

I fell like this is one of the best videos out there. My fiance and I want to go RVing but we've only been together for a year and are just beginning to live together. Now I can see why people wait until they're older to do this. We need more time to grow together before we isolate ourselves in an RV for an extended time. Thank you so much!!!

From UK 23.9.20.RV Living.Not Spell Ckd.Ok. Good and not good.Theres lots could be said. But not enough background re prev life. For instance the Hot Rod involvement I would have thought be worth explaining about.IE how it started and why. I only saw brief glance at a w-shop and a house. The trouble is, brief glances whet appetite but was disapointed. You could claim the film is about the RV situation but I still think a lot more should be explained. Alsoi more about his partner etrc would be good. Am pleased that they are aware of the difficulties posed by that RV way of life. This may not be popular but I feel I have the right to state that I would not have taken that step for several reasons other than those stated. Maintaining a complex vehicle without a workshop is a nitemare. Also the vehicle will almost certainly depreciate whereas a building often appreciates. Its all very well when young but spose one partner gets ill. I dont even want to think about that kind of outcome.It seems to me that people in US still have the desire for pioneer ways of life. Apparantly H Ford thought that way too. The US is very different from UK and I wonder how many in that country realise it., I worked 7 days a week sometimes 24 hours a day but RV is a small van and a 10ftx15 ft ridge tent. It astonishes me to see huge RVs by the 1000 going this way and that. The people must be very rich.I started life in a 10ft x 12 ft room and was ill. The RV depicted is as long as our house. Am also pretty tired at looking at landscapes and cityscapes. If I was forced to do a RV life I would find a site which had Water and Electric and a sewage arrangement.then put the vehicle on a hard standing Take the weight and then store wheels under cover. I would make sure the site is near to some built up area. Yes you then need a cheap car., Was thinking of putting a tarp over the unit in winter. But theres the windows to consider. The other plan I might have is to get large or ample barn and stick the RV inside. This I reckon is best, I dont know the laws in US so am dreaming. I did not see whether the couple have a second vehicle. Most of this is conjecture. Nice to see holding hands. I need more info.Why am I cautious? Its because I had a life of failure stress,disappointment which kept step with massive efforts. Have noticed on other RV shows no one seems to have or read a newspaper. Also no one even mentions what is going on in the area or country.They just chat about their own ambition and lives.Have not seen anyone yet at their wits end., No one mentioned the press reports of Trump being pursued by 26 women on sex grounds. Nor does anyone notice that his father made manoy from properyty speculation and prostitution.Also it seems people are not aware of the writing analysis we did and found a tendancy similar to that of the 3rd Reich upper levels. We indicate aggression. The level of crrptn in UK is at epidemic levels and we ourselves are experiencing police attacks because of the evidence that the BBC advised to hide it abroad. We found that all HM prefix orgs were implicated as is the HM Courts. We experienced death threats from the US security firms here. Thats the firms that beat,shot workers in 19th C US. Seems to me that the public cant be trusted when voting. Why dont we expose it? The entire media and press has told us they wont print any of it. Social media like face book,destroys the accounts and mails. We have no access to health system or welfare. No reply from 2 HM MPs. No reply from 25 Universities. The people in this road social distance is 50 meters upwards. I laid here in terrible pain for 7 yrs screaming in agony. No help. The Local Govt here say this- "If Theres Anything Wrong With Local Govt You Have To Go Get A Lawyer".Forgot to mention the horrific US Cities No wonder they raped.killed.tortured.burned to death the orig US poulation..Have a nice day.Wish we had one.

I already sold my home! I have lived one year in my RV. Class C 31 foot with my disabled son who is 29 years old. I live in a RV Park right on the lake. I am good right now getting used to RV life stabilized. I have bought things for the road when that happens. Solar Generator, down sizing even more with just the things in my RV. I do have a nice set up on patio by lake with Gazebo, storage small heavy plastic bldg, dog area I have 4 dogs and a bird. Yes I do the same thing I used to have China Cabnet with every Crystal & China, special silverware...etc. I do miss all that. I don't miss the keep up of my home, and all the STUFF IN THE GARAGE!! I JUST WENT ALL OUT, SOLD HOME WENT INTO RV. I was done with staying one place, money into home, clean, clean, clean!! It takes me 10 minutes to clean inside when all is kept up. Outside I blow leaves.

Thank you for making these very informative videos. My parents were RVer’s even before it was popular. We had a converted bus way back in 1965 and I can remember it had a toilet and holding tanks. In 1975 when I was 15 they bought a stripped down Dodge Maxi-Van, tossed a mattress in it and a portable Coleman stove and cooler. I had a Walmart tent and away we went. 3-months, Mount Rushmore, Sequoia, Yosemite, The Space Needle, Yellowstone, Cody Wyoming and so on. So much fun. They went through travel trailers, pop-ups, a Champion Motor RV and had just bought a 5th Wheel when my Pop passed away in 1998. We live in FL. I too have the wondering spirit and have suggested to my wife that we save and spend money for something livable to travel ½ year to a cooler summer climate. My kids split mortgage with us so we would not be giving up residential life entirely. Does this sound like a good way to begin?

Hi there! Sounds like your parents were adventurers! What great memories you must have from those trips! Yes, it does seem you are limiting your risk by starting out again and going for six months, while still hanging on to your house. For the first few trips, stay close to home so you can make any modifications needed, plus off-load what you end up not using. Happy travels!

Great video Liz and Paul! My downsides... Noisy neighbours! I get it, some are out to party, some are “living” from their rig. In many cases sites are pretty close together so it is super important to still “do you” but at the same time respect the space of others close by. When we have noisy neighbours, we close the windows, turn up the AC and turn the trailer into the Maxwell Smart cone of silence - Movie or reading time! :) Thanks for the video guys!

In regards to your laundry issue, there are actually some small electric washers you can definitely use in your RV shower. I found mine for $100 on Amazon a few years ago but I have seen them in big box stores since. You can then spin them to nearly dry in the same unit. You can hang your clothes after or pay for a dryer. It isn't a perfect solution, but it works if you do not have access to laundry services! It saved me so much time, labor, and money when I lived in the middle of nowhere.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 года назад
Hi Rozela, That's awesome, thanks so much. I do believe I will get one of those little washers one of these. Doing laundry has turned into an "event" that takes up much of the day bc we have to go to a laundromat and do it all. Would be nice to just drop a small load in at home in the rig, and then just go about my day. Thanks again and have a super weekend!

@stayfocused1041 Год назад
I know it is an older post, but do you have any recommendation as to the brand of this small electric washer? We are going full-time RV, decided for no W/D for the same reasons explained in the video. However, I have a very bad allergy to synthetic fragrances. Laundromats use strongly scented products both for washers and dryer that would "contaminate" my sheets or clothes. Thank you!

For the laundry one I have a easy fix. My father was/is a truck driver and I used to go with him as a kid. You can take your RV to a truck stop, have fuel, play some pool, arcades, different restaurants If you don't want to cook, laundry machines, showers, and clothes. You can spend the night in your RV and not have to worry. 98% of truckers are cool guys and don't mean any harm. They just want to do the job and get back home.

I have a washer and dryer in my Grand Design TT and almost none of the things you talked about applies. Yes it shakes the rig a little but no more than a strong wind. I also have a natures head composting toilet so my black tank has never been used as a black tank so I can do laundry while boondocking using biodegradable soap so I can actually let it run out on and into the ground. Also am a disabled vet so I am can stay at a parks on military base for $400 per month all utilities included. I do live alone and maybe someday I will get lucky like you two did. I have both ATT and Verizon unlimited so usually one or the other will work for internet. I also have a tv service that only costs me $10 per month and is an android app that gives me all stations including all hbo, showtime etc. so I can usually watch that anywhere I am. If I can't I just read. I much prefer the Travel trailer to a fifth wheel as I can use my truck bed with a camper shell and a place to stay when I take shorter trips.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 года назад
Hi Larry, sounds like you have the perfect setup for you. We love how the fifth wheel pulls...especially on windy days. I bet that's a tradeoff you are willing to make since you can use the extra storage in your truck bed-- and use it as a mini camper! Glad to hear about the washer/dryer. Someday we may get one in the RV so it's good to know that there are ways to make it work. I am grateful that I got to do this life solo before meeting Paul. What I learned is to be friendly to EVERYONE and that is the best avenue to finding a partner. I had ruled out Paul as too old but we remained friends...and you know the rest of the story! Thanks for your comment. Happy and safe travels to you!

@@LizAmazing Hi Liz, thanks for the response. I am also a plant based vegan so that makes my search for a mate that much harder and unlikely. I have a very expensive Hensley Hitch on my TT and even in high winds I don't have a problem. I have a cummings 3500 4x4 truck so that truck could pull two of my trailers no problem. Living at this base in 29 Palms is such a good deal I can't get myself to leave and with this lock down I don't see myself traveling much. Are you guys traveling or are you sheltering in place?

We had a washer/dryer combo in our 5th wheel and we had no problem with it. I could wash two queen size sheets and two pillow cases. I would take to to the laundry room to dry since it didn't do a good job. What we found the reason it didn't dry because it wasn't vented outside. I love it.

Yes a we boost can turn 1 bar into 3 and Verizon has the best coverage but there will always be places where even that doesn't work. Some people have 2 plans AT&T plus Verizon but that gets expensive. Take Heart 5G and starlink will one day give us internet everywhere but not today. It does continue to get better. Plus there is a huge difference in weboost systems. Mine has a 25 foot mast that attaches to the side of the RV and the directional antenna draws a much better signal but you have to aim it in the right direction. When you do have internet I use sling TV to get TV. So yes internet is a big deal.

25 years living in the cab of a truck as an over the road truck driver, for me living in an RV will be like living in a regular house. As far as internet and cell service when I first went on the road, we didn't have cell phones. Truck stops and pay phones were our means of communication. Over the years I've watched service continue to increase to the point that I now, rarely find area that have no service. It can be limited in some areas of the west, especially Nevada out away from the interstate and major cities but for those areas, I just plan ahead and make sure all ofy communication has been taken care of before heading in to dead zones. I have the advantage of knowing where all of the dead zones are all over the country. Another thing to consider is, plan to check your equipment, tires, fluids, fuel etc... Before heading in to a dead zone. Be aware of how different environments, weather, temps and altitudes affect your equipment and tires and plan accordingly. Especially when traveling through dead zones.

We have lived in our 5th wheel for a year now. We rented out our house to a family member and we have a pad with full hookups in the backyard. COVID has made us planted for a while. When we went to Alaska last year, it was sometimes difficult to find a decent laundromat. (Especially in Seward, Alaska. It was always jam packed). So for me, my #1 drawback is the laundry issue. For my husband, he says some things are a handicap but not drawbacks. We love this lifestyle.

Hi Kathy! Yes, we do, too! Right now I am sitting on a bench outside the laundromat. While it is not my favorite part, it is a very small part of the RV life. We do laundry every 7-10 days. Some of the earlier problems like laundry and mail are more of a lack of patience. I think the downside is people wanting all the conveniences of staying put, not to mention instant gratification while living a lifestyle that doesn't necessarily support those demands. Living on the road means adapting and rolling with whatever comes your way. Most of the problems expressed here can be overcome by simply slowing down your life, and dialing back your expectations.

Wise words there, thank you so much! We've met several folks who start out this life on a huge cross country trek super-fast. Weeeellll, I sorta disagree with the lack of community. Paul! You're a vet, a combat vet, you have a dd214. UC Military CG app, military camp ground. Also, the RV community is a unique family, always willing to help. Love your stuff.

Hi Scott! Yes, the RV community is the best! We are slowly building a community of campers. So fun when we see each other down the road at different campgrounds. Still, we both miss meeting friends for lunch and going to get togethers and that sort of thing. Overall, we love RV life and see no end in sight.

I have been solo full time for over four years. My worst issues are 1) finding RV Parks for extended stay. They are pretty much all booked. 2) DMV. I'm at a different rv park every year and in a different state. I finally picked a home rv Spot in Tennessee. I will be back at my previous rv park for another winter. That Will help. Can't reregister my truck until I get back to Tennessee in October. My plate expire the end of August. Could be worse.

I'll have my fingers crossed for you that you get back to Tennessee by October without getting stopped. I think you have a good chance! I did the solo life for a year and am glad I did. Be safe out there.

@@LizAmazing thanks. When I left Tennessee, the DMV was closed due to COVID. So I think I have a good excuse. My trailer tags are current. That helps too.

We just started full-time in July of this year ,I think the most important thing is that couples are 100% on the same page with each other. There are challenges and it helps to overcome these. So far so good for us, the only thing that kinda bothers me is my large older black lab it is really difficult to travel with her at temporary spots or road travel i have to lift her in and out of the truck. Definitely something to consider when making this decision. Other than that we are happy with this life style.

Hi Thomas! Congrats on living life on the road! We love it. Yep, older dogs are something to consider. Our dog is 13 and we have to make accommodations for him as he seems to be not liking travel as much. That was so great that you mentioned about couples needing to be on the same page. You will likely have some stressful travel days. Here's our story about campground stress and our tips: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YzzaHgHQGlU.html

Hi guys! Great video. Regarding lack of community: sometimes we mistake social media for community. We were fulltime for three years before ever attending a rally (we never understood what they were for). But we've made LOTS of connections at rally.
@LizAmazing

Rallys! I went to one for my Chinookvan- and you are correct. Instant friendships! Great reminder as we have not been to any for our current RV. And agree that social media can be a poor substitute for the real thing. Stay safe and well.

We have been full time for 2 years and enjoy the freedom. The toughest thing for us, so far, has been good vet care for our older ill dog. It's really hit or miss out there as to getting quality care for a sick pet. We lost our girl recently and are very far from our home base. Luckily, we found a vet that performs cremation so we won't be forced to bury her in some random area. Something we never gave much thought to before heading out on the road. Lesson learned, no more pets while living a nomadic life.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 года назад
Awww, so sorry about losing your fur baby. I agree that vet visits can be hit or miss. We took Mango twice to Blaine Animal Hospital in Washington State last week. The vet there is the BEST! We can't say the same thing about VCA in Palm Springs. They were awful. One thing I remind myself is that each time Mango (who is 13) sees a new vet, he is being seen with fresh eyes so maybe this vet will see something that his regular vet may miss. Maybe as time passes you will revisit your decision to be pet-free. I know with Mango he has only needed special visits in the past year so he's been healthy and just needing shots and checkups along the way. Happy travels to you!

I watched this a while ago and have just re watched it. I am still in sticks n bricks and hoping to hit the road when I retire in 6 months. In Australia there are a few 'on road social clubs' which you can join. It is so good. I joined one and members can arrange meetups on the road. Also members can post questions or suggestions which is very helpful. The one I joined is only for women which is good for those on their own. It is very social.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 года назад
I love that! I think if I were solo again I would join a group like that so I can have companionship while checking out the sights and safety while camping. You have just six months to go. I hope you have a countdown calendar so you can see the days go by as you get closer. Congrats on your upcoming new chapter in life!

Good points! When I proposed to Hubs that we hit the road for 4-6mos. he was reluctant to give up our wood shop & I said that if we get a toy hauler we could have it with us. He thought that was a great idea, pick up/buy wood wherever we are, make something then it goes from importing raw wood to having a souvenir (if we cross the border to the States). I don’t want to give up the house, I want my crap! And mostly I want a home to come home to, I just want that security for when we can’t travel anymore. Sometimes I want to be gone for just a couple of months so I don’t miss birthdays! And sometimes I just want a smaller rig to haul. I don’t know how the renting from RV rental companies goes in the US but it is expensive up here, you pay for a period of time you want then you pay per kilometre you travel! You pay PER day to have a second driver and and there are add ones that are per day or a flat rate. The kilometre charge is what makes it expensive if you want to drive across country without rushing & for that amount one can get an used rig! Laundry: there are those portable washers that seem to be like wringer washers without the ringers. We traveled with just a carry-on bag each & would hand wash...I suspect that is what we’ll do most of the time with a few laundermat visits.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 года назад
Hi Libby! A toy hauler is a good answer. I don't like giving up the windows because the weather is not always perfect to have the ramp open. And you're right they can be big. But a good option all the same. I know there is something like an AirBNB for RV rentals. You'd have to do your homework and still be careful. I have rented an RV from a big company. VERY expensive. But they did say if I purchased one of their rigs, my $3500 would be credited. I do like the idea of a small washer for those times when I spill something on my shirt. Thanks so much for your comments. Paul and I would LOVE to visit Canada! So beautiful. Hope to meet you on the road someday!

I don't RV but have not had my TV turned on for 3 months. Only use it to watch a documentary now and then. I'm a research freak, everything from A-Z. But I can see myself going without access for weeks at a time. The other weeks, I think I would need to camp close to a coffee shop with access. I think that having a companion traveler would be a great asset when things go wrong. Just having the moral support while getting through it.

Good stuff, Kiddos! I hate the wishy-washy and would miss the convenience of having enough clothes to go a long time without washing them. Same with towels. It's something I'd have to mentally prepare myself for.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 года назад
Yes, it was certainly and adjustment and still is at almost two years in. I miss having a washer if I spill something. Paul got diesel fuel on a shirt and it sat for a few days before we got to the laundry- unfortunately it stunk up some other clothes that were in the bag. One day maybe we will get one of those mini washers that sit in the shower. Just to wash one shirt at a time and hang it up. Overall, the good in the RV life far outweighs these very minor inconveniences for us. Hope to meet you on the road someday!

Things that suck for me is me and the girlfriend got a 24 ft no slide out and got a dog 5 months ago so small space be prepared to slim down on items if you go small and the other winter time had our pipes freeze because we didn’t prepare ahead of time spend a while using the ol lady’s hair dryer unfreezing it but besides that it’s not bad I enjoy it definitely saved me a lot of money especially living in Washington 650 a month I love it

I'm sure you've heard by now, but you can start looking into Starlink internet. As of now they don't fully support moving frequently but if you do move you can put in a request and they will update your address. Eventually, they plan to have a mobile model but I plan to live full-time RV and think it will work for me as I don't plan to move too often

I’m not an R V ‘r , just tuned into your channel out of “ curiosity”. When we were children our mom always had a corrugated “washboard” and did laundry sometimes either in the kitchen sink or the bathtub when our wringer washing machine broke down (often! Since we were 10 kids) . So I found an “older than dirt” wash board, in a junk store , and I like to use it sometimes. Also if the weather is ok I have a multi folded clothes rack , on which I hang out laundry to dry outside or inside mostly overnight. Keep on “ enjoying” your RVr life.

Thanks Deborah. That is so cool that you travel every summer. We have a Thousand Trails membership which helps so much. We basically camp for $50 a month, but you would have to be able to justify $600 a year so it may or may not be worth it for you.
