Mary has been a frightening old lady since she was19. She's the best of he grandmother, and the worst of her. I see this and as much as I like MS's character, I would rather have William, Lavinia, Sybil and Matthew alive. There is nothing so sad as when young folks die. This show lost me when it prioritized Maggie Smith witticisms over true heart.

Matthew Martinez you somehow insinuated that a simple "my dad is in the same situation" somehow meant someone hadn't prepared someone for the mortality of things and took it as cue to go into a full rant how that is a parental failure IN RESPONSE to someone saying their father was terminally ill. Pardon my French, but what the duck, fude? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mary is and always has been the younger Violet. She can seem selfish and harsh if you don't know her, but underneath is a heart of gold and someone who really cares about their family. And both those hearts were revealed to be softer by a Crawley- Isobel for the Dowager and Matthew for Mary.

Maggie and Michelle just bright on that dynamic of grandmother and granddaughter in a very touching and relatable way...it was a passing of legacy, and a beautiful closure on the dowager's arc. If she comes back for a second movie, we'll all be delighted, but if happens of she won't, that would be the best way to finish the story of that great character. As much as I love both the portrayal of an era that Downton Abbey makes and Downton Abbey itself, I know that the Britain of that time had a lot of problems: moralism, prejudice, colonialist oppression in Africa and Asia, hypocrisy, greed and so on. Even today, Britain still reaps what was sown back then: it still is one of the Western European countries where wife-beating, gender violence, and homophobia are a daily-basis occurrence, things that should be still happening only in Third World crime-ridden poverty-stricken religion-infested undeveloped countries. So, I do not fall prey to rosy retrospection, which I believe is the trap where you set your foot in.

Such an epic character, I know she was fi ding it hard to film D A, but this was so sad, I'd love to see a prequal of Downton Abbey, say early 1800's to mid, to see how she was in her prime, such a great character, thank you for giving us these characters or even focusing on d a after the fuderal, to almost modern day, panning through the house where the servants once slept and how the generation grow up in 50's I've got allot of ideas, but it won't be the same after this character departs the hopeful film or one off episode. Like a Christmas special, I miss this series so much, I don't think I appreciated it enough when it was on, now looking back, it was a wonderful series, the biggest mistakes were the table layouts, but that's all I can say, goodbye and goodnight Downton has left the building.😢

That reminds me of "Upstairs, Downstairs" , the TV series in the 1970's. The Bellamy family lived for many years in their London house and my recollection is that the series ended with the family leaving the house after the crash of 1929. If you like "Downton Abbey' you might enjoy 'Upstairs, Downstairs" also.

Love Downton Abbey, then you will love C.A MacRae's Gemini Complex, The Cabal: After the final demise of the Cathars at Chateau Mount Montségur in the south of France in 1244, a heroic rescue by a Knights Templar took place. Six hundred and fifty-three years later a murder and spate of suspicious deaths of the clergy become linked in the south of France. Flo’s first day (10th November 1918) at Chandringham doesn’t work out quite how she imagined. A bright but humble farm girl finds herself thrust into the upper echelons of society. Rather than being trained in the everyday tasks of a maid, she’s told she needs to leave her old life behind and immerse herself in the life of the aristocracy, as Lady Mary Tavistock. Her world is turned upside down, Flo realises she’s not the person she’s always thought she was and to make matters worse she finds out her life is endangered. In order to make sense of who she really is and what her purpose in life is, she’s sent to Switzerland to meet others of her kind. The Gemini Complex, The Cabal is the first book of a trilogy. It's going to be released later this year.

This scene was so moving. Of course I don’t want to die soon but to me knowing your time is coming might seem a little exciting like preparing for the ultimate mysterious adventure.

She said she "may" not have long to live. That sounds like it isn't certain she will die soon. And poor Cora gets skipped over as the dowager?

George is also the heir to Robert. Cora wouldn’t be dowager, unless she and Robert had had a son.

Kathy Edens “Dowager Countess”just means that she was a countess but her husband has died. Cora will become a “Dowager Countess” at the time that Robert dies.

How does that work, anyway ( lineage wise). I thought now Robert was the Earl, replacing his father ( who we never met- he’d died before the series began), that Cora was next in line to be Dowager. Think that’s how the Royal Family works, and wouldn’t they be like that? And George is next in line- Matthew would’ve become Earl if he’d lived longer than Robert.

she is ready. goodbye lady crawley. We will never forget you. The Torch is passed. That's what this scene was. We will not see Violet Grantham again. A finer woman, fictional or not, has never or will never grace this world again. Diva Salute!!

I went to the Cinema with two friends to see the movie, one had never seen DA, but she was there because she loves me, and the other was a casual viewer who was there because she quite liked DA. I don't cry, specially in public, but this scene had me quietly bawling, from the moment they entered that door because I could feel it coming. My friends each held my hand to get me through it 😂 It was sad, but also so liberating! She did have a good life, and that's all we could ask for!
