I commented on your Don't Go Insane reaction but RU-vid deleted my original account and all of my previous comments so I don't know exactly what I already said lol I'm going to talk about the story behind it and think it's funny how you said that this one seems to be a standalone compared others 😂 As you probably already know Ian is making a storyline based on his life dealing with bipolar disorder type I and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Besides Ian himself, there are three main "characters": Mito, Mr Insanity, and The Hybrid. His first works (1st EP and 1st full album) focused on Mito while his 2nd EP, Dear Insanity (this one), focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. He's going to release an EP focused on The Hybrid in a few months. He delayed it so he could make a bigger project. I'll only talk about Mito and Mr Insanity here since they are the ones present in the videos you've seen. Mito and Mr Insanity aren't just characters, they are real people that have a mind of their own called "alters" (short for alternate state of consciousness) and that he coexists with. In DID there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language, beliefs, motives, etc. DID stems from severe and/or repeated early childhood trauma (particularly before 5 years old) and the child fragments the mind so the "new person" can deal with the trauma and not the child otherwise it would be unbearable. That person was Mito. That way the child's mind can't fully integrate into one whole identity and instead it becomes multiple distinct identities. Just like fragments of a mirror, they all work seperately but together they form the whole mirror, a 'system' (how someone with DID may refer to themselves). The physical version of his first EP had a broken mirror inside the case. Someone with DID only knows this mechanism to cope with trauma: to disassociate and become someone else. So they unconsciously switch between identities as they are exposed to stress and also more identities can be formed throughout their lives. Mito (the acronym for Moodswings In This Order) is the "protector alter" since he was created by the mind to deal with any trauma and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget it. Mito is depicted as a fallen angel and represented in MVs by wearing black, with a deep voice, missing an eye because of white contact lenses and wearing a ring with an eyeball. The association of Mito with an eye is due to the fact that the ‘eye’ symbolism is important to him because him as a visual director recognizes that the best lenses of the world are the eyes. So when he switches into Mito and his world flips, it’s like he loses one eye. He also has trouble looking at himself properly in the mirror. He always closes one eye and hat's because he has a hard time processing who he is. The only Korean word that Ian uses in his whole discography until now is ‘눈’ (in the song “Mood”) which means eye. Ian is the prominent identity, the one who stays the longest in the body (called the "host"). In very stressful situations Ian blacks out and Mito takes control of the mind in order to protect him (he's the one "fronting" ps. there's also cofronting meaning more than one alter in control at the same time.) Ian then will come back hours, days, weeks later (the longest that it has been was a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. Mr Insanity is his bipolar manic phase. Mania is a period of euphoria or high irritability, with increased drive and decreased sleep. It can lead to psychosis and exhaustion if left untreated. Psychosis is when there’s a break from reality, the person doesn’t know what is real and what’s not. They start to hallucinate (seeing something that isn’t there) or have delusions (believing something that can’t be true). About the butterflies, Ian said that they are the symbol of Mr Insanity. He's the only one that can see them, like an hallucination. He said this is inspired by a mental health assessment test that shows "butterflies" to the patients. He was probably talking about the Rorschach test which consists of showing 10 inkblots and then the person needs to associate each card with something. Some of them look like butterflies. Ian then associated butterflies with sanity. The more butterflies you see (like Mr Insanity) the more clinically insane you are. Ian calls the place where the whole story unfolds "The Other Side" which is actually his consciousness, where these alters exist. The only way to get into "The Other Side" is through lucid dreaming (which Ian frequently does in real life). Lucid dreaming if when you know that you are dreaming and you can manipulate the characters and places within the dream. In the story there a specific door that Mr Insanity is trying to open which represents the memories/traumas and Mito being the protector is trying to stop him so the trauma won't be revealed. The 'door analogy' is because Ian's lucid dreams there are a lot of doors and going through the wrong door could turn the dream into a nightmare. Now "Peanut Butter & Tears" is the very early stages of Mr Insanity. Child Ian starts lucid dreaming and wandering through these 'doors'. The first door that he enters he is met by a whole new world he never knew that existed: “The Other Side”. He tries to understand where he's at until he realizes he can't leave or he doesn't know how to get back. Essentially the longer he stays lucid dreaming, the longer he ventures into “The Other Side”, he starts to lose the grip of reality and beomes insane. Hence why it's the birth of Mr Insanity, his manic episodes. 'The green asteroid seen on the beginning of the video was a huge part of his dreams when he was a child. Somewhere down the mind, venturing into these doors/memories, Ian/Mr Insanity comes across his youth or memories unlocking his youth, one of them being "Peanut Butter & Jelly". However when he comes across it this time it’s "Peanut Butter & Tears". As he said It’s a ‘sad freak show’. This song is about childhood trauma (represented here by a visit to the dentist), how it shapes you and losing the joy in life as the years go by. When he wakes up at the dentist as an adult there’s glitter tears on his face so probably representing the aftermath of the trauma. Also about the green guy, called The Green, we just know that he's Insanity's sidekick so there's not much known about him. But most probably he isn't Mito lol I actually made a PDF talking about his storyline. In case you're interested it's in the pinned tweet on my twitter ( @squirrel7303 ) or I can send it directly to you if you want. Thanks a lot for the reaction! Hopefully I was clear enough (I never can keep things short 😭) and I'll be waiting for more!

That is definitely a lot but getting to understand the complexity of his mental health issues and how he portrays them on screen is very refreshing but it's also a little scary because does it not trigger something to become forefront? Like does he not accidentally trigger a disassociation or does he not accidentally trigger a manic episode with the visuality being so intense and I am definitely looking forward to seeing more from him, I've seen the full storyline of Dear Insanity and I'm still shook by everything, he is so incredibly talented to be able to do everything he does and to add on top of that his dealing with DID and Bipolar just HOW?! Like dammmm boy save some talent for the rest of humanity, no wonder I'm talentless when Ian is in the world 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@gaymerjaymee111 I forgot to say the order of the Dear Insanity MVs. 'Limbo" technically isn't in this EP but it's still part of the storyline. The exact placement of Limbo we still don't know. We just know that it goes before "Don't Go Insane". So supposedly the order is: Peanut Butter & Tears / Limbo (there's no confirmation of which one comes first, but for me P&T then Limbo makes the most sense if you know the story) => Don't Go Insane => Don't Go Insane Teaser => So I Danced You're so right about his talent! It's crazy! I have the same type of bipolar as him and when I see him leading a succesful career it inspires me a lot but it also makes me feel like a whole fool lmao 😂 About the triggers, Ian said that Mito usually comes out when he is revisited by a feeling similar to the one that he felt during a traumatic period. Given that he's the "protector" he usually comes on when their 'system' is at risk, since changing identities is how the mind learned to protect itself. Now about mania, in bipolar there's no real trigger. It literally just comes out of nowhere if someone is left unmedicated. The only time when it usually does is when the disorder begins. With bipolar disorder the person needs to have the genetic predisposition for it then some event, usually an stressful/traumatic one or a dramatic life transition, triggers the disorder (for Ian his bipolar started after puberty, mine started after I got into university).

Honestly I didn't even know about Limbo but now that I do, I am adding that one to the list, I kinda went in the wrong order then because I thought So I danced came before Don't Go Insane, although thinking about it it makes more sense for that to come AFTER the Teaser lol, Gonna have to rewatch it in the correct order this time with the new context of a whole new video and song in the mix, maybe then it'll fully make sense to me hahaha
