When he said Hulk Hogan belonged in San Francisco in a different interview, I couldn't stop laughing.

I'm black and I can laugh at dr d David Schultz. He was supposed to be hated. He's a heel.

He was playing up the stereotype some folk's up North still hold about those from the South. Being a heel he took advantage of it to get big heat. Kinda like how an actor whose job is to play the part of a racist jerk for a movie says racist stuff for the movie. Just cause they are playing the part don't mean they really are.

The funniest part is how they just bring Hogan in right after this is said and he doesn't acknowledge any of it. Mean Gene says something like "I can't believe some of the things they just said" and instead of Hogan following up with something bashing them two for saying those things and sticking up for Atlas/Johnson he just goes into his routine and cuts the promo on Masked Superstar. I don't know, to me it just makes the Hogan character look bad. They should've cut to something else before bringing him in, instead it's all one shot so you can see that he was standing just off camera the whole time and did nothing about it.

This card being advertised was actually the first live WWF wresting event I ever attended back in 1984. While the content of this promo does not age well, this is simply a heel getting major heat. We also have to consider that this is 34 years ago and we are looking at it through today's lens. To add some context, simply go back at look at 2 particular Eddie Murphy stand-up comedy specials that were released as movies around that time. 'Delirious' was released in 1983 and 'Raw' was released in 1987. Eddie Murphy could not do 65% of the material in those movies today without some major backlash. Between the homosexual jokes and the domestic abuse jokes, he would be excoriated in today's environment, but they are simply jokes. While this promo certainly would not fly in today's corporate WWE, there are those who understand that this is simply a heel getting heat despite the protestations of the perpetually offended pearl-clutchers.
