@@KaneRobot yea like 2 seasons of superstars no championship wrestling at all a handful of all American episodes and prime time wrestling has the most but the old network before peacock had alot more
After 9-11 I was one of the National guardsmen at the airport in Vegas. I got to meet a lot of interesting people, including MC Hammer, Mohamed Ali, and the Iron Sheik. The Iron Sheik was walking through while my battle buddy and I were standing between the delta checkpoint and monorail; he saw us and came over and talked to us for about a half hour and left us with signed photos. Dude was totally chill, and really seemed to enjoy hanging out with two soldiers standing at their checkpoint. R.I.P. Brother.
Mean Gene blurting out "the soil!" and accidently causing Sarge's promo to go off the rails, and then the hilarious regret he clearly feels as a confused Sarge tries to weave that into the promo🤣🤣 You can clearly see the moment Sarge is like "what? soil? well..........okay." Comedy Gold!!.
Nikolai seems like such a genuinely nice, good natured, fun loving man and yet when he walked through the curtain the hate from the crowd was palpable. What a magic thing the world of wrestling was!
Andrew: One of the reasons why I was very glad to see him turn Face at last in The WWF. He had been a very convincing and powerful Foreign Menace style Heel throughout many NWA Territories. So when Nikolai Volkoff became a Hero it was a joy to behold! R.I.P. Mr. V!🤔😉🎤💪🤼♂️B.W.
My AFJROTC instructor used to say that in class. He said he got so used to cursing in the military that he got home to Thanksgiving & said "PASS THE FUCKING POTATOES!" & everyone looked at him like he was crazy. The Flight died laughing
1:15 - I don't think Mean Gene was ready for Sergeant Slaughter to just go on a complete all-American _tear_ after he flubbed his line. Gene just couldn't contain his laughter! Even Slaughter, himself, eventually cracked up! Ah, man. Golden.
Slaughter was known for spitting all over everyone during his interviews - not on purpose though. Gene with his towel, wiping his face and laughing proves it. Great clip.
Bobby The Brain was amazing, especially with Gorilla. I also like Gorilla and Jesse as a combo. Half the stuff Jesse and The Brain said would never fly today.
Mean Gene Okerlund was without a doubt the best ever at what he did. This is when wrestling was great. You had the matches and then you have the one on one interviews which are far more entertaining. Then the skits you see backstage and on remote.
@@dr.floridamanphd I agree with you 100%. At least I have the option to turn it off when I’m at home I feel sorry for the people in the arena that have to watch it.
Sad part is If it was nowadays people would of said he’s disrespecting the turkey let’s cancel him all while having thanksgiving with turkeys 🦃 on their folks
Have heard nothing but good things about Mr. Harris and seems like he'd have been a riot to hang out with he Mean Gene and The Sheik I hear they all were or are Great Guys
I think the best thing for me was the level of love and respect they all had for Gene. He got away with ribbing them and saying things that would have gotten an average person punched. They knew how good he made them look and how easy he made that part of their job. The guy is the best 1 - on 1 interviewer in the history of pro wrestling. There were better partnerships and better in-ring announce guys, but NOBODY beat Jean 1 to 1.
I dont disagree with you about the love he got but I don't think he "got away with it" cause he was one of the boys you know? Like I was in the army and we would constantly go out of our way to annoy each other, play pranks and whenever we would bump into someone from a different branch we'd heckle the hell out of each other but we had zero tolerance for regular civilians messing with one of our guys. I remember we was in a bar and some local guys was talking shit to a recent national guard recruit saying he was a weekend warrior and a toy soldier. We made it very clear to them that unless they actually have the balls to enlist and endure the training you don't have the right to show that guy disrespect, yeah we joke about his branch but he's still our brother. Then we bought the guy a few beers and proceeded to talk shit about him needing "real" soldiers to save his ass lol I imagine being a pro wrestler back then was like that
I don’t know why, but personally seeing “the boys” have fun in the 80’s is just wild to me. I always just hear stuff like how they would basically get stabbed, get beat up, yelled at, everything in the world. But just to see them goofing around is really wholesome. Especially Iron Sheik.
You only hear about the bad stuff in shoot interviews etc ‘cause they’re a good story/sells dvds etc. I’m sure the majority is like this, just the guys having an absolute hoot.
When the WWF first started their expansion they came to Denver I think it was 1985, the Shiek was there and he talked to us in the hallway of the old Denver Auditorium Arena for about 30 minutes after his match. Nice guy, he wanted to know about each of us and how we were doing in school and if we were eating right and doing some sort of daily exercise. You would have never thought that he would have the problems later in his life with drugs and whatnot. He treated us like he knew us for 10 years.
People close to him say before his daughter was murdered, Iron Sheik was just a character for the camera and in the ring, but he was still Ali Waziri outside the ring. After his daughter was murdered, he went off the deep end with drugs and morphed into being the Iron Sheik 24/7 as himself. Sad story, but he seems to have finally cleaned up enough and will be 81 in a few months from this post. Considering most wrestlers die young, Sheiky surviving into his 80s is amazing.
I grew up in this era of wrestling & even a few years before! Dick the Bruiser, The Crusher, Mad Dog, King Kong Brody, Pepper Gomez, Bobby Heenan, just to name a few of the legends that paved the way! These guys blow today’s wrestling out of the water!
God, how I remember all, these great episodes. It seems like it was just yesterday sitting on the living room floor in front of a wooden floor model Zenith television watching Saturday morning Superstars of wrestling. ---- May all of these great wrestlers from the past and Mean Gene Okerlund never be forgotten. Rest in peace and thank you for such great entertainment
Wow that’s exactly my memory. 45 years old and I remember just that sitting on my living room floor turning the dial on the wood floor panel Zenath TV those were the days!
Indeed, your comment agreed 100%. The changes in the business now would never compare with the same experience we had when the WWF aired on T.V. back then.
You almost made me cry.. those are my memories too. I hate being old now but I wouldn't trade being able to be a kid during those times for ANYTHING in the world. Such great memories.
This was great. To me the best era of wrestling. All these great wrestlers, managers, announcers and add Mean Gene Okerlund and Howard "The Fink Finkel, what more could you want?
Now that the illusion is broken, we can laugh at all of this ludicrousness. I love it! Mean Gene must’ve had so much fun working with such BIG personalities.
Gene was, and still remains one of the funiest Americans ever. He was every bit, and sometimes even better than the actual bout. Comic genius. Essential to the success of the whole shebang.
What a time capsule here wow I loved every second of this vid. God bless these wrestlers commentators and managers, who have passed and those still with us!!! What memories I have to tell to my little children of the good ole days of professional wrestling
At 55 yrs old growing up in s jersey watching this brings back so many wrestling memories back then as a kid these wrestlers were mesmerizing on sat mornings for years thank you💯
3:45 that was one smooth-ass save that even makes Valentine look like a million bucks, laughing at his kayfabe opponent. Too bad they didn't make it through heh.
