Please join us for a keynote presented by Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr. of Princeton University.
The Department of Intercultural Student Engagement, Black Student Union, Brothers of Color and UNitEd have all worked very hard to offer this to our campus and community members.
One of the nation’s most prominent scholars, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. is an author, political commentator, public intellectual, and passionate educator who examines the complex dynamics of the American experience. His writings, including Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul, In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America, and his most recent, the New York Times bestseller, Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for our Own, take a wide look at Black communities, the difficulties of race in the United States, and the challenges we face as a democracy. In his writing and speaking, Glaude is an American critic in the tradition of James Baldwin and Ralph Waldo Emerson, confronting history and bringing into full view our nation’s complexities, vulnerabilities, and hope - hope that is, in one of his favorite quotes from W.E.B. Dubois, “not hopeless, but a bit hopeful.”
Dr. Glaude is joined by University of New England President James Herbert and Associate Provost for Community, Equity, & Diversity G. Christopher Hunt.
The University of New England is Maine’s largest private University. UNE offers more than 40 bachelor’s degrees in needed fields, from the health professions, to the health and life sciences, to business and the humanities. We also offer 30-plus graduate, professional and doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, social work and more. UNE learning happens online and on three beautiful campuses: on the shore in Biddeford, Maine, in-town in Portland, Maine, and at our study-abroad campus in Tangier, Morocco. Visit www.une.edu for complete information.

I love listening to Dr. Glaude. I pray we start living in our truth and start talking openly and honestly about race/racism.

Since I came upon Dr. Glaude on RU-vid I have found a kindred spirit even though I am an old white guy. In my rage and frustration I find a refuge and a harbor sitting at the feet of Dr. Glaude.

Absolutely, Chantelle. He speaks to us beyond Identity Politics, to our common humanity, with an eloquence and depth that is unsurpassed.

@@channiballecter Not yet... my reading list is so long now, and as a writer and scholar, I just can't keep up with everything, so thank God for Dr. Eddie's interviews. Two books that have been deeply important for me, and informed a lecture I gave last fall, are: Jeanne Theoharis. A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History (Boston: Beacon P, 2018); and Jemar Tisby, The Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2019)... Oh, and by the way, I have a couple of readings I did of Langston Hughes on my channel, which some people have enjoyed. Langston still challenges us to open our hearts and minds... ~ Blessings and warm regards to you, Chantelle... ~ Michael

@@chambermuses7802 same here with the long reading list. I've been working my way through "The Laws of Human Nature" by Robert Greene for the longest time 😫. I'm definitely going to head over to your channel and check it out.

No other country or nation has identified slavery and racism as a problem as swiftly and course corrected nearly as much as the US. When I was in elementary school in the 80’s and beyond I was given an accurate history of slavery, racism, etc. Reparations have been paid since the civil rights act in the form of affirmative action, quotas, tax benefits, grants, and many other things. It is now I think considered unacceptable by most people in this country to be racist. Is there still room to grow? What are we debating? I don’t think the US has a sense of exceptionalism any longer. Look around and you’ll see it. There is a growing movement around America being bad, because you’re white you were born to privilege, etc.
