Found out Wilko had passed, came straight to this video. Honestly his impact on multiple generations of British rock bands, and by extension around the globe, can't really be overstated. Absolute legend, RIP Wilko.
I was watching an interview with Andy Gill of the Post-Punk band The Gang of Four and when he cited Wilko Johnson as an influence, I thought, "Oh yeh. Totally..."
What a frontman Lee Brilleaux was. Always looked coked up and about to have a heart attack, but when he broke into a harmonica solo you just knew he was the real deal. RIP Lee and Wilko
So much of punk and new wave owes so much to this band..the guitar, the simplicity, the aggression, the seriousness, the shapes, the riffs, the suits, the haircuts, the super tight bass and drums and spitting vocals..magic!
Oh man, that's too bad. I just came here to send a link to this for a friend, as Wilko had come up in a conversation re: guitarists. Didn't know he passed. RIP. One of a kind.
It's ultra simple. Compared to the rhythm sections of, say, Earth, Wind & Fire or James Brown, this is elementary. Interesting that this is labelled 'rhythm and blues' but sounds nothing like American R'n'B.
The Feelgood's will always be one of the best Pub Rock bands of the 70's...They always looked like the vilians from an episode of The Sweeney!!!👌😊👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
Right up there with the most accomplished guitarists, the enormously talented guitarist Wilko Johnson, a totally unique performer. Loved him. Hope he makes it up with Lee Brilleaux so they can make that endlessly enjoyable & riotous R&B music together again in the heavens, they were an amazing front pairing. The very best in fact. Rest in Peace, you are going to be badly missed.
Sorry, Wilko was a deep atheist, a full believer in the Void. See "The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson": it was a core part of what made not just his life and work, but his death as well, such a superb example for humanity. So, no he won't be playing Let's Make-up and be Friendly with Lee Brilleaux. And that's just the way it is.
He was a pretty humble guy though so if it turns out he's wrong am sure he'll carry on rocking. The Ecstacy of Wilko Johnson is a great piece of film making. John was an great guy.
The best song of 1975, which didn't even reach the charts (as it was with Roxette, 1974), with Telly Savalas getting to number 1 talking through If! R.I.P. Wilko Johnson.
Big figure on drums, John b Sparks bass guitar, Wilko Johnson lead guitar & Lee brilleaux lead singer. Ladies & Gentleman, the best & tightest rock & roll band of all time
Only got the Feelgood factor a couple years ago ,shame on me that a wasted years not knowing how good they were, why the fuck Wilko left to join Ian Dury we will never know! Must have had photos off him or something ay
Robert Cadger It was a bit more complicated than that. Read Wilko’s book “Don’t You Leave Me Here” for the full story, and a wonderful overview of the great man’s life.
Damn, the stage presence is *real.* Wilko is the type of guitarist that compels you to get your body groovin', movin', shufflin', wigglin'. Whatever you do, baby, rock & roll on! 🔊🎶💖
This is the hottest, smokenist, rockinest tune ever. Perfect in every way. Signed: a 67 year old geezer from Detroit, who's heard a lot of tunes and seen a lot of bands in his time. Wish I had seen them live.
Wish I'd seen them in the early days. I did see them once in a pub in South London after Wilko had left. It's still remembered as one of the hottest gigs I ever went to!
I'm a 60 year old geezer and just discovered this in April 2021. I thought I knew all the good bands. Now go watch: "Wilko Johnson and his band live at Klubi Tampere 23.9.2015". Beyond cool.
@@TimSchmidt_art Good link! It does my head in to think that the music I listened to in a south London pub over 40 years ago is still being played in places like Finland!
Really discovered dr Feelgood after Wilko's gone... they weren't punk enough for me when i listened to them as a kid. I was so stupid and a narrow minded fool... what an incredible band they were. And that telly tone mmmmm greatness sonified. i have to repeat: INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE band.
RIP Wilco. Cheers and thanks to you and Lee. and let's have a pint when I make it to town! Fan since 75 or so: we could only get the LPs and 45s on import here!
What a priceless snippet of social history, the crowd loved being in an actual tv studio with a great live band and they knew they were getting a rare taste of freedom, fun and self expression.
Never realised this song was so old until I saw this video, this crowd looks like my mums generation and I’m 46! …these guys were way ahead of their time
All that sound... and it's only THREE instruments! Big Figure's driving drumming is spot on, the bass player (name?) is laying in the bottom... but that Wilko! Wow... SO much rhythm and sound from only ONE guitar. He was so modest, but what he did on the guitar, and how he did it... was so extraordinary! Of course, I would be remiss to not tip the hat to Lee, too. Lee had such a powerful voice and animated stage presence. What a show they were! Sure miss these guys.
Wrote Lee brilleaux a letter thanking him for his music which I followed when I was in my teens...when I found out he was terminally ill. I got a reply ..treasured it... a few weeks later he passed on. Great band. Great music.
absolute shivers every time I watch this....dirty, raw, visceral rock n' roll aimed straight at the solar plexus and never failing to hit the target. Lee and Wilko have both fundamentally informed my musical taste ever since I first heard this stuff as a primary school kid. Ciao Wilko X
Wilko probably made an everlasting impression on rhythm guitarists all over the world. Eddie van Halen was the wizard, Wilko the riddle. No one can touch his way of locomotion guitar playing.
Wilko is an original that can't be copied - and at the same time influences a wide variety of players. For me - that's where the rubber meets the road. Amazing character. Have to be him to play him - and he gives something to strive for. And check out the bass player, John B. "Sparko" Sparks playing pumping bass/rhythm guitar on the bass! The whole thing is a great kind of nuts. And they were high on speed. Crazy times. Ordinary lives don't make music of this energy.
Wilko doing the job of 2 guitarists. Godlike genius. I saw Dr Feelgood in 1978 when I was 13, sadly he had left but they were still fucking brilliant. One of the best gigs of my life.
RIP Wilko ... "He did it right!" ....Watched this when it was first broadcast on Tyne Tees Television. I was very impressed by Wilko's guitar playing. I learnt how to play like him many years ago and always enjoy playing this track in particular.
Early 2013 and I'm just through a cancer treatment. Wilco announces he's not going to die from cancer after all. Right... me neither! Thanks for everything mate!
Becoming adolescent in early 70’s GB,I was truly blessed with seeing great bands on tour. I saw Dr Feelgood several times.Unfortunately it all put paid to becoming a sensible:upright and productive member of society...and then came Thatcher and the utterly broken country we became in 1980’s. Although Britain was called the sick man of Europe,it produced some of the greatest bands and music you will ever hear...thank God for the “Dole”-it allowed all these bands to survive and thrive!!!
Canvey legend, a total one off with his unique style (Like Keith Moon but with a guitar). His influence on the the punk movement that was emerging at the time should not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed.
Fantastic band. never to be again some thing else consigned to history. I feel sorry for the young people of today. I recon the children born to the sixties saw the best days.
The energy expended in this 3 minute clip is astounding...Dr Feelgood COOKS! Just "discovered" this band today and I'm already a big fan! That Wilko is so unique, not only the guitar-playing, but the walking back and forth. Never seen or heard anything like him. Love the lead singer--he looks like he's about to explode.
They were awesome, I jumped on the bus in 1975 aged 14 after school to go see them at Halifax UK Civic theatre, that "feeling" never left me, ....that's why i'm here! LOL. T'was magical.
What a guitar tone. He used very heavy strings. First time I ever heard of Wilco was on a TV series called "Rock School"...as soon as I heard and saw him I was like "Who. Is. This. Guy?" The energy and playing style...out of this world.
This is the kind of video you watch 3x: once for the song, one to enjoy Wilko, Lee, & the rhythm section, and once just to look at wholesome non-obese girls dancing.
Superb performance. Great and intense lead vocals by Lee Brilleaux, great bass and drums backing from Sparko and The Big Figure. Unique and stunning lead by Wilko. Great, great band.
@@andyhalstead3949 Best band live ever [too young to see Hendrix!]. It's funny up here ^^^ with the audience of 14yo girls plus the somewhat embarrassed balding bloke. Saw them at Liverpool Stadium 75/76. No teeny girls, just LOTS of pissed/speeding blokes. It was like being on the Kop every time Wilko threatened a solo.
Thank you, Wilko Johnson, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. I can still remember you playing the guitar, stretching and contracting the curling chords. From Japan.
When Dr Feelgood first came on the scene in the 70s I was amazed at Wilko's style of playing. Never seen anything like it before. Rhythm and lead all in one. RIP Wilko you were a legend.
@@jimmyjam4371 Yep Jimmy. I remember flying back to Newcastle from London on a Friday and Joe Jackson was sitting accross the aisle and he said he was performing on the show
Possibly my favorite live rock video ever. These guys are focused. Wilko is a mix of hyperspaz and cool rock god. And the crowd is young and innocent looking but digging it, dancing as a single unit.
Richard i agree with you , how amazing are these chaps ,,, what a complete bunch of genius bands men ,,, They are full of utter enjoyment from start to finish lol x
I live in Colchester, Essex and spoke to Wilko after one of his local gigs about this specific video and it’s impact on me. It’s a live segment from the film Oil City Confidential. They refused to mime and literally busted it out in one take. The crowd were trying to dance to it like it was Elvis or the Beatles but the stabbing delivery was so fresh it just threw the room off. Dr. Feelgood were absolutely ferocious in their day and prided themselves on their live performances.
