Dr. Georgia Ede received her B.A. in Biology from Carleton College in Minnesota, then spent seven years as a research assistant in the fields of biochemistry, wound healing and diabetes before going on to earn an M.D. from the University of Vermont College Of Medicine.
Dr. Ede then completed her residency in general adult psychiatry at Harvard's Cambridge Hospital in 2002 and was a staff psychopharmacologist at Harvard University Health Services from 2007 to 2013. In 2013 she left Harvard to become the psychiatrist for Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts where she provides nutrition consults as well as psychiatric services to Smith students.
Dr. Ede was the first and only psychiatrist at Harvard University Health Services to offer nutrition consultation as an alternative to medication management to students, faculty and staff. Her areas of expertise include ketogenic and pre-agricultural diets, food sensitivity syndromes, and college mental health. She explores food’s powerful effects on brain chemistry, hormonal balance and metabolism for Psychology Today and on her website www.DiagnosisDiet.com.

Thank you for that excellent presentation. My 32 year old son was diagnosed with MS in 2018. After some research, he switched to a paleo diet. He was able to eliminate all medications and improve his quality of life significantly. In addition, the MRIs show that the illness is not progressing.

Congrats on your son’s recovery! Am suffering with autoimmune conditions and trying to heal myself with the right way of eating; am an extremely clean (no processed or junk) eater but clearly thats not enough as some specific foods can still inflame the organs. Why did your son choose paleo and not keto? Thx!
@YourLifeRedefined
@YourLifeRedefined 2 года назад
@@goodhealth3020 probably due to higher protein consumption which is ideal from a nutrition standpoint. Check out the GAPS protocol if you need more help. Sounds like you need some gut healing still and the book will walk you thru it. Either edition is fine.

Dr. Ede is amazing. I didn't learn about her until about 9 months into my keto journey. I had mild/moderate anxiety and took prescription medication to help. Being in ketosis and eating whole foods has not only helped my weight, but it immediately helped my mental health. I no longer need any medication and I feel better than when I was taking it! Truly amazing! How many people could this help if people were open to trying it?! If it didn't help after 4-6 months, they could always go back to eating whatever they used to eat. No harm done.

When I was in my early 30s I was crippled with anxiety attacks that seemed to go away out of no where. It wasn't just anxiety it was physical symptoms.. like i had forgotten how to breath right. At the same time Dr. Atkins and a few other books (the Wrinkle Cure) came out about low carb. I didn't put the two together but with Atkins, I went from about 150gs of carbs a day down to about 50. I increased my intake of Salmon and meat and without even putting the two together my anxiety and problems breathing went away. Until.. in my mid 40s I tried one week of Vegetarian... and it all came back. Then I knew... it was carbs and perhaps the lack of fish and meat.

It might have been the poisons in the plants you ate. Took me very long to overcome my blind belief (fed by doctors and propaganda) that plant foods were good. I found out that some if not most plant foods (all whole grains, soy, almonds, beans, most small-seed-bearing fruits, peanuts, potatoes, peppers, rhubarb, leafy greens (especially spinach), kale, tomatoes, broccoli, and more) were the causes of my intestinal distress and anxiety and joint issues. The damage occurs slowly and is cumulative. A warning take by me.

Great information from Dr Ede, again learnt so much today from all these informative videos from Low Carb Down Under. I suffered greatly from brain fog and low energy level and the ketogenic diet saved me, cleared the fog and got stable energy level all day long. I wasn’t even eating a high carbohydrate diet to begin with that’s what’s shocking, I was sold to believe it didn’t matter what types of carbs I put in my body as long as I didn’t over eat overall calories. So I didn’t eat any staple carbs like rice, pasta or bread with meals, instead I choose to eat daily 2-3 cookies as a snack, protein shake that has dextrose in it and cakes 2-3 times a week. I thought I was ok because I ate moderate amount carbs since I only ate roughly 100g carbs a day. My gosh how wrong I was, after watching numerous videos educating myself I realise I was already insulin resistant. I wasn’t overweight so that made it even harder to realise how unhealthy I was. My partner saw improvement in his mood and energy level too, he use to get frustrated easily and angry from work quite often. Now when pressed with the same crap from work he handles it much better. We started Keto to get our health back and we’re never looking back!

Wonderful presentation. I have been on keto for 11 months and have lost 130 pounds. I find I have more mental clarity, and focus on keto. My father was manic depressive. I understand that this condition is hereditary, maybe keto will help me avoid this condition. In any case, a year ago I would not have even been interested enough to listen to this lecture. So, keto must be having a positive effect on my brain. Thanks for your efforts. It was informative to say the least.

Thank you for a very helpful presentation. I’ve noticed profound improvements in my mental health conditions on my ketogenic journey. I had already stopped medication prior to starting keto, because I wasn’t happy with the negative effects (weight gain in particular), so I know the improvements weren’t related to medicating with pharmacotherapies. I’m grateful to have the power to improve my health (including T2D) through nutrition, not medication. Everyone deserves that opportunity. Thank you for mentioning ASD and the review article suggesting the ketogenic diet may be an effective therapy. I have a family member with ASD and I believe they could make some changes well within their capacity and alleviate many of the issues they deal with if they adopt the ketogenic diet. My wish is for more practitioners to educate themselves in nutritional medicine and understand that they cannot treat a person’s condition without first ensuring their metabolism is heathy. Bravo to you and the work you do.

I really like listening to Dr Ede, I have enjoyed all of her talks. I just scream though when "mediterranean" is used improperly, being a huge fan of those cuisines, and they are indeed varied. Nigiri, really, mediterranean? First off, where did the salmon come from (and it probably was farmed!) Anyway, that is just me tearing my hair out (or poking knitting needles in my eyes as G Taubes would say) every time I see those beautiful cuisines mangled by some bizarre idea of what it means. Cous-cous (fish, seafood, lamb etc), grilled fish (NOT salmon), pasta (as an first course, not 2 lbs as a main course), Bacalao, game, rilled vegetables doused with olive oil, salted preserved lard, fermented butter, and the list goes on. But, I am a fan of Georgia Ede, definitely.

The only thing I’d add concerns types of whey protein. Whey protein isolate(As opposed to concentrate), is unlikely to affect blood glucose or trigger damaging insulin response because it doesn’t contain lactose(sugar) at a discernible level. The fact that this product is usually mixed with other foods(for example, high protein keto baking)makes a negative effect even less likely, but does contribute a valuable source of high quality complete protein. Also, eating collagen or gelatin on a regular basis adds a high level of the amino acid, Glycine to the diet which is particularly important for brain function, especially in promoting healthy sleep patterns.

It has always been difficult to teach genuine holism (more properly expressed as "whole-ism" perhaps). The Cartesian influence in Medicine and Western science is so strong that separation of physical and mental health persists. It's a pity, as it guarantees a certain level of ignorance or blindness. Georgia confronts this subtly in her presentation when she wonders at the separation between neurology and psychiatry, though it is not explicit that she really understands the underlying issue. A good presentation. Thanks LCDU.

Thank you Dr Ede! I wonder if/what the link is between “cerebral glucose hypometabolism” and SCT (Sluggish cognitive tempo) where the latter is like the inattentive ADHD classification (that should probably classified as a separate disorder - look up Dr Russel Barkley) and has more to do with anxiety issues and brain fog 😶‍🌫️ (Garden variety hyperactive ADHD has a problem with execution functioning like impulse control and wonky time perception etc). I appreciate that ADHD wasn’t just lumped in with other disorders that can maybe be “fixed” by “just eating less sugar” as something like brain fog isn’t actually a diagnostic symptom of the disorder. People love throwing ADHD in the ring of supposed not real disorders (it’s very debilitating over a long enough period) than can be fixed with some magic not medical cure. (Medication is the most effective way to manage the symptoms by a huge margin but of course you feel better with a good diet and exercise etc so the latter helps its just not a replacement for medication)

Why would you test glucose 1 hour after? Most comparable readings are done 2 hours after. It would be ideal to be below 125 mg/dL, but brief spikes probably are not so significant. For diabetics, this isn't so easy to achieve. Low carb is helpful, but honestly it would be better to encourage people to achieve the best that they can, and not be telling them they are damaged by spikes, because they already know they are, and many cannot do a lot about it 24hours / 365 days year. It is exhausting and "healthy levels" is a bit relative for people who have to deal with a manual pancreas that doesn't produce enough insulin anymore. 140 as a specific number seems a bit arbitrary dividing line to me -- why not 135 or 145?

What is a paleo diet? If you’re of Northern European decent it is a diet that excludes all plants and fruits that come from Asia and the Americas as they are all recent introductions to the diet of Europe. If you’re an Eskimo almost everything that’s not fish seal or whale needs to be excluded. While it’s possible that Palaeolithic tribes may have refined grains to make breads this doesn’t mean that grains are to be part of any paleo diet, some cultures made flour out of cycad palm nuts , even with multiple washings the flour still contains enough cyanide to kill brain cells causing early onset dementia in people as young as thirty five.

Blood sugars normally drop in a day. And all the other effects (like fat loss, better mood, decreased inflammation, better immunity, etc.) come in gradually (days to weeks). Many low carbers opt to do keto (or similar diets) for life. It's a proper human diet, not a bandaid fix.

You can, but it will likely kick you out of ketosis. Being fat adapted works better the longer you can maintain it. Why would you want to eat cereal though? Just curious, but cereal is nothing but junk calories with very little nutrition. Well, assuming we are talking about commercial cereals. Eating something like oats with milk and fresh fruit isn't anywhere near as bad as the factory processed variety.

A little bit of bullshit here. The author didn't cite one study to back her 'conclusions' while criticizing studies that didn't. My question is: if eating 'animal' stuff is such a life and death thing for one's brain, how can anyone explain that our closest big-brained relatives, namely the big apes, tend to be completely or nearly-completely vegetarian. Are all chimps and gorillas suffering of brain diseases? If her theory was correct, and she is listing a number of essential brain nutrients that can only come from animal sources, then all strict vegetarians would be either mentally challenged, insane or brain-dead. Which If find to be funny. By the way, I am not a vegetarian or vegan myself. My diet is probably pretty close to 'keto' but I can see bullshit when bullshit is thrown my way.

You seem to be conflating _"big ape"_ nutritional needs with human nutritional needs.

Gorilla's are hind gut fermenters meaning that they consume huge amounts of fibrous plant matter which is converted to short chain fatty acids by their gut bacteria. Although it may seem like the gorilla is eating a low fat diet, it is getting the majority of its fuel from fats. The down side for gorilla's digestive system is that it is not efficient at absorbing proteins so the poor gorilla has to eat its own shit to make sure it gets enough protein. Hope this sheds some light on what seems to not make sense.

@@wobbler1972 Somehow, malnourished gorillas tend to grow a bit larger and with somewhat bigger muscles then Keto and Paleo humans. So gorillas get their protein by eating the protein they excrete? Hmmm... interesting. I suppose human vegans but not Ketos do something similar? [references to 'eat me'] :)

@@arthdenton we are not apes and have diiferent nutritional needs, a bigger brain and a different digestive system. Each species has a specific species diet. A panda doesnt eat beef, a cow doesnt eat bananas and a shark doesnt eat green vegetables. We are meat eaters and our digestive system is designed for meat /fish.

Yes. Really bad. No joke. Shed the propaganda and research it deeply. I learned the hard way.
