Dr Jesús Martín-Fernández - Neurosurgeon, Neuroscientist, Conductor, composer: I'm pretty sure that artist's are different people because creating things like cooking, composing, conducting, everything, is like going beyond what you are. A lot of philosophers and scolars have been discussing this, but I think art is the highest cognitive function of the brain of the human being. You have language, attention, executive functions, semantics but on the top is the Arts and you are creating something that you don't need. You don't need art, you need to have proper language in order to act according to the behaviors of others but you don't need art. So why? That question is fascinating." "The young neuroscientist, neurosurgeon and composer from La Palma, Jesús Martín-Fernández, 30, who currently works in France with his mentor Hugues Duffau, made history in February 2023 at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona by carrying out, together with his team, the first surgery awakens in Spain from a brain tumor located in the right hemisphere, managing to identify and respect areas in charge of personality, emotions and social cognition. In addition, he applied, for the first time in the world, an artificial intelligence test with metahumans (avatars), designed by him, during surgery, with the patient awake, to identify which parts of the patient's brain are responsible for processing emotions.
