Tried to get through (~30) questions I had planned while still letting John speak his mind. I certainly had many questions based on his responses, which will likely have some follow up videos looking more into what Dr. J was stating. Hopefully this interview addresses some of the most common questions many of you have (including myself) about X3, Dr. Jaquish himself, and variable resistance. We certainly can do a follow up in the near future. Like I said at the start, regardless of the many claims, I do love my X3 system and use it every workout. They are having their biggest sale right now ($150 off) that if you click on the link to purchase does help support me and the channel. www.jdoqocy.com/click-100825257-13511487

Great interview! I have been an X3 owner for 4 years and a consistent user for the last year. I bought it and it sat in the corner for longest time. I started using it last year and I can defenitely tell a difference. I am a 46 year old, 15 year veteran of the U.S. Army (multiple deployments) and I was constantly hurting and just not feeling well overall. Since using the the X3 system, I have gotten stronger, my joints do NOT hurt, and my mood has drastically improved. Thank you for doing this interview with Dr. J. I wasn't aware of the 1exercise/1x per week protocol. My current schedule is Mon-Push, Tue-Pull, Wed-Off, Thur-Push, Fri-Pull, Sat/Sun-Off. Have a great one!!

Mike, you somehow managed to strike an unusual combination of interview: (1) being very casual and not traditionally professional, and (2) asking the best questions of any interview. The way Dr. Jaquish lights up when you ask him the questions you do really says something about your interviewing style. Your interviews in general, and especially those with Dr. Jaquish, are some of the best I've seen on RU-vid. Keep it up.

Soloflex was the OG of variable resistance but they never marketed it as such. I recently refurbished an old SF unit and have used the X3 protocols on the machine. It is an elegant way to work with variable resistance and has a great dip, pull down, and pullup setup, as well as squats and and deadlifts. i have all the weights, kettlebells, and toys, but only started seeing changes when I use either a bar and bands or the Soloflex. Dr. JJ for all the bluster and controversy is on to something. Find an old Soloflex for the home gym and use the bar and bands when you're on the move or want to be outside.

Phenomenal and to the point interview! Courteous but also holding his feet to the fire. Excellent! I’m also used to more volume but I actually just ordered my X3 a few days ago and I’m going to have to throttle back on the volume and give it a shot as prescribed. I know you have done more volume with it and other things, but it sounds like you are enjoying the lowered frequency as well. Just like he was. When I have used very similar resistance band set ups, with 1 set per exercise,I feel like I get smaller, but maybe I need to give it more time. Thank you!!!

ofc you are getting smaller. You are doing less work. Dont be sold in to scammy systems that take your money. You guys are paying hundreds for literal rubber bands so that you can do 1 set and think its going to work. News flash, its not. John literally built his physique using drugs and traditional weightlifting.

Great interview. He actually answered a few of my questions. I will be ordering his book. Would love to see a follow up interview. With that said, his workout protocol is reminding me alot of Mike Mentzer later work in terms of Intense, brief and infrequent. Because not even Arthur Jones lowered the brief and infrequency of the workouts like Mentzer did. So far I have seen a few of Dr Jaquish interviews and what he says make sense. In fact in my younger years when I had some one help me perform a force reps I was thinking something similar in terms of resistance changing. Of course nothing even close to what Dr Jaquish work. Looking forward to reading his book and possibly getting the x3.

I found that bit about working the muscle only once a week interesting. I definitely noticed at past gyms my largest plateaus and worst progress was when they pushed me into working out 6 times a week. I had always found 4 a week best for progress, but I never tried reducing it down further. I kind of want to experiment with that now. Great interview. It was nice to hear a more moderate take in balance with Dr J's brashness.

Watch Mountaindog John Meadows. He found certain muscles. I think biceps for him, was once a week. or every 5 days. To see progress. When doing work on them multiple times a week they were not getting bigger. I'm not trying to get big, nor will i dedicate time to it. But it will change the way i feel out reps, sets, time off. I'm a 10 to 20 min workout at home, 3 times a week person. Heavy when i can, but short duration. And it's mostly bands. I see some progress but not enough. I need stronger bands or more dumb weights.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 месяцев назад
Frequency should be based on progress. If you've plateaued at x days a week, (assuming non-exercise stress, lack of sleep, or changes in nutrition aren't an issue), try adding a day off. This concept can also be applied to # of exercises per session. Ex: Instead of both horizontal & vertical pushes & presses each workout, try alternating them.

Marketing genius. I'd never pay the asking price for the X3 (I paid less for my used Total Gym GTS) but can't fault the guy for being a good salesman. At least he offers a quality product for your money, which is more than some companies do. But you don't need an X3 to be fit and look good. You need consistency (using one of many training methods, to include an X3) and a good diet. Any statements to the contrary are pure salesmanship.

When I first heard the statement "lifting weights is a waste of time" uttered by Mike Mentzer some years ago that really caught my attention & when I started employing statics in the mix, along with the negative emphasis that really changed the game for me. Progressive Overload works to an extent however especially with advanced people you get to a point of diminishing returns & the danger of imposing, ever increasing load upon the body can & does have deleterious consequences. The great news is that by utilizing certain protocols/methods like TUT & slowing down the cadence & using statics can make light-moderate loads feel much heavier.

Great interview! Very informative. The timing on the release of this video is perfect for me, because I just received my X3 system today (well, it arrived a few days ago while I was out of town, but in my hands today)! After hearing the interview, I think I’m just going to commit and give the complete program a try. My only question is if I’m trying to lose some fat in addition to the muscle growth, does he recommend supplementing with cardio? I also haven’t read any of the material yet, so maybe I’ll see an answer to that in a little bit.

When I was a teenager, I ran across a book called. I think X power factor training, and what the book basically taught you was full range of motion while exercising was a waste of your time and it kind of pointed this out that at the end of your range motion was where you were the strongest on almost every single exercise you ever performed, and by only doing and lifting that small range you would not only be able to lift much more weight Number two your recovery would be much better because you weren’t only working out the exact week parts which when you do full range of motion is really what you’re doing now I never truly tried to implement this as I became lazy in my teens and didn’t exercise as an adult but nonetheless it kind of goes back if you really think about it to this form of exercise working better the only difference is you’re still using traditional weight and you’re not wasting all of your strength and energy on your weak point
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 9 месяцев назад
I want to look into that book now. Thanks for sharing.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 месяцев назад
The sensible goal's to gain strength in EVERY range. The difference between 'weak range' & 'strong range' strength will remain the same no matter how you train. So then, how does one challenge the strong range?: FIRST, do full-range, THEN, when you can no longer move the resistance in the weak range, shorten your ROM to the range in which you're able to continue. EVENTUALLY, this will shorten to be at the max contraction point. It's challenging your AVAILABLE strength that enables progress.This will challenge your strong range just as well as a heavy weight/band would challenge your fresh strength. Heavy resistance leads to joint problems. Guys who train that way consider joint pain to be 'part of the game', & take painkillers & (further-damaging to joints), cortisone treatments.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 месяцев назад
One's strength curve remains the same, irrelevant of training protocols. If you like the idea of lifting as heavy as possible, go ahead and avoid full-range, HOWEVER, the rest of your range will remain just as *proportionately* 'weaker' as it was before. You could actually do the opposite: Work only in the weak/stretch position with a lighter weight & still get full-range strength, (w/less potential joint damage). Current research shows this to be more efficient for muscle growth.

I bought the x3 a year ago and it works and is very good. I did have an issue with one of the bands were it started to shred, probably an anomaly from a bad batch. This was a couple of months after I got the x3. I was very disappointed in how they handled it when I called them to ask for a replacement band, I got the run around and they eventually said that they would not replace it but wanted me to send them a photo of it as they said it was unusual for that to happen to the band and were curious to see what it looked like. For what I paid for the product I felt that they should have replaced it. Other than that it's a very good product.

The bit about CARBS NO. For too long now carbs have been the whipping boy for peoples ignorance about calories in and calories out. Made a bit of beginners progress. I was active before going in life, biking, sports etc. But marked the time I went and noticed zero progress in the Mirror. I felt it was worthless after a year time. For me it was absolutely my diet. I think that is a huge blocker of progress for many. But what do i know. I'm training with bands on occasion but not all the time. Is that is now. But i don't think so. Leaning out on a proper diet. Low carb ish. Muscles are getting bigger with less effort. Overall good interview. I notice you happen to ask very good questions that I would like answers too but you then follow it up with a different question way off from the original question For example at 54:07 you ask “how is your body looking hypertrophy size with the lower volume?” Great question I wanted to know the answer to that But then you quickly ask without hearing his answer “is X3 the only thing you use?” Again you ask great questions but they don’t get an answer all the time.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 8 месяцев назад
I hear you. I had tons of specific questions I wanted to get into and even knew there would be no way to cover them all while still allowing John to speak. As with really any interview, without really making hard cut offs, topics are going veer around a bit. For that specific question that was one (of many in the interview) where I tried to lay a bunch of topics out there in the hopes he'd cover them in a general way. I pretty much already knew how he'd answer that hypertrophy question though and likely did just call an audible to the main question. He has stated he's training for building muscle tissue in the most efficient way possible, so I can't imagine what he's doing now would be less than optimal for his goal. At the end he in some way covers this as he says he's getting the best results training one set, for each muscle group, once a week.

How often to train; does this mean I have to go from 7x a week down to 3x a week, and I'll get better results? + maybe 1 make up workout if I wasn't 100% on one of the workouts, making it 3 most of the time, and sometimes 4?

The debate about frequency, high intensity, and how many sets is a long debated question. You definitely can go down, major rabbit holes if you discover this. But I would say, overall, just start experimenting, be mindful of recovery, and see what works for you.

I am even willing to accept that it can be a nearly equally effective alternative to weight training. But Dr. Jaquish loses all credibility with his argument that weight training doesn't work. Resistance training with weights is possibly the most scientifically proven and replicable activity in existence. With consistency and effort, EVERYONE can benefit from it. And his claim that there are only one or two thousand actually fit people is beyond absurd. Go into almost any gym at any hour and you will find people who are jacked or who have six-packs. I might even be interested in his product, but the fact that he relies on lying to the public makes me not want to give him my money.

Frequency should be based on progress. As a rule, this means adding a rest day if you've plateaued. If you didn't do as well as usual after x days off, it's time for x +1 days off. I went from 3xwk, to 2xwk, now 1xwk. To avoid scheduling complexity, I'm keeping 1xwk, instead, alternating some exercises, ie: compound rows & seated presses even weeks, pulldowns & chest presses odd weeks.

I'm grateful you take the time to interview these creators and don't worship them but instead learn what you can, offer some challenges or new questions. I LOVE that you challenged his idea with Jim Stoppani's upcoming system. Especially when he made wild claims about needing to spend crazy money to build a better home gym system. 😂 I'm grateful he pushes his product hard and offers a great system. I still prefer my cheaper bar and band system so far and don't feel limited at all, in fact I've made my own modiffications to do some exercices better and different length bands, and frankly am looking forward to trying a lever gym with bands and minimizing the risk of injury in some ways. But man, get him outta here that calasthenics doesn't build muscle. Pull ups, push ups, body weight squats, etc all got me my first 15lbs of muscle when I was younger and I regularly do bodyweight exercises for my De-Load weeks and find it still helpful, useful and helps me get stronger. Its not always about getting bigger muscles, its also about moving better, being stronger and having more endurance too. Ive been a "hard gainer" all my life, but every 6 months when I try a new style, I still manage to pack on a good pound or two of straight muscle, so I usually dont gain more than 5 lbs a year but I'm more than happy with my progress and think consistency and balancing your diet and rest/recovery is where most of us fall short. Patents @12:45 - I did a patent search. The following is not legal advice/opinion. To date, he has a number of design patents that cover the ornamental (non-functional) aspect of various iterations of his bar, base plate and waist belt. The analogy for design patents is like getting patents for the non-functional ornamental shape of a lampshade, but not the functional aspect (a cover that diffuses an internal light source) of the lampshade. He has one utility patent for what appears to be for the current X3 bar (a solid metal shaft going through a hollow tube with a band arm coupled to the ends of the solid metal bar using endcaps) with claims to the specific structural components of the bar. He has another utility patent on a bar with force sensors. He does not have "all the patents" on bars for use with bands. Although it appears that the X3 bar is a high quality product and I applaud his robust design and that it is made in the US, it just bugs me that he would imply, in my opinion, to be the one who had first attached bands to bars, although he states that he "owns all the patents that looks like X3" which is a true statement, that looks exactly like X3, not like J Bryant with hooks or Prebene also with hooks. The patent examiner did not allow him broad claims to the subject matter but just to his specific version that is the X3 bar. There is a pending patent application that may grant as a patent having different patent claims.

I have a very good question : Let’s say that you are pulling up 400 pounds of force , now let’s say you go to a barbell with 300-400 pounds of weight on the bar to do a deadlift, will the user be able to lift the weight ? John says the x3 makes you stronger but how does it equate to lifting real weights? Also I saw a podcast video and the person doing the podcast had a very very good point, he says the x3 system is kinda one dimensional meaning the pushing is ok but the pulling motion isn’t all there. I know I didn’t explain that well. On a deadlift you have to be your strongest at the beginning ( bottom ) of the pull not the pushing example that John always defaults to when he’s explaining the x3.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 8 месяцев назад
It's not as specific no. You might get strong with the band tension in say a x3 deadlift, but that weight (and skill) of a bb deadlift will still be there at the start of the pull.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 месяцев назад
(You *can* pull, w/the x3's floor platform.) 400 lbs on an x3 is like a 1/4inch lockout from a power-rack. ie: A '400 lb' band's starting resistance is virtually 0 lbs. A 400 lb barbell on the floor won't budge. (If an X3 400 lbs's a new personal best, you'll be able to lift a heavier barbell than before, maybe c150 lbs instead of c140.
@rambojohn7118
@rambojohn7118 8 месяцев назад
@@lazur1I agree , the x3 will pump up your muscles but you won’t get the strength as with free weights. With a band the user needs that force at the bottom of the lift and with a band it’s not there.
@cynicist8114
@cynicist8114 7 месяцев назад
Lifting 0 at the bottom is an advantage, not a disadvantage. The fact that you need to do 400lbs minimum in your weakest range means you can hardly lift more, while an X3 user can lift higher weight because he is not capped by his minimum.

So I'm very tall, but this naturally also means that it's harder to gain muscle right? I'm 6'3 = 194cm, and I'm happy with that. I weigh 185 lbs = 84kg, which is heavier than smaller bodybuilders who look very strong. Although I don't look the strongest, 84 is fine with me. I was 81 one year ago, I'm 21 now. My goal is to be 90+ one day, if possible 93-95. For me even building muscle, it shows less because I'm tall. But smaller people who look more muscular, carry less weight. I love band training I was doing it before the X3 came out but I find it very hard to believe that he made no progress from weightlifting. The muscle doesn't know the difference between a rock, jugs of water, a barbell, or a band as long as it's progressive resistance and you're getting enough protein the muscle will grow. As a trainer I have found that variety keeps interest and enthusiasm up. Again I think bands are very good tool but if they were superior then we wouldn't have equipment gyms anymore we would just have resistance band centers. Gym owners wouldn't have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and have 10 to 50,000 ft² facilities. Also professional athletics is all about profitability so if bands were superior they wouldn't need entire weight rooms and training areas they would just be using bands if they worked better. I think we're bands work the best is in a small home gym or if you are doing personal training in other people's homes the X3 bar the platform and the bands are a great mobile piece of equipment and you can change the band very quickly so the convenience and the mobility of the equipment is what makes it a good product.

I was not impressed with my results. My arms appeared smaller and I wasn't happy with how I was looking. When I went back to lifting weights I had demonstrably lost strength across the board. I probably got better results in one month of weight training than in the previous 3+ months that I had committed to the X3 so in a way they got the "3x better" part sort of correct only in reverse as I’ve personally found that my weight training results were 3x better than they were when using the X3. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to derive some benefit from using the X3 but claims that it is as good as, or 3x times superior to weight training are utterly absurd. The X3 has been out for 4 years now. If it legitimately built muscle 3x faster than weight training as claimed then we should be seeing countless examples of guys who put on 40-60lbs. of solid muscle over that time (as Jaquish claims to have done) and yet we clearly haven't seen that. Here's another whopper from "Dr." J. He states that you are 7x stronger at lockout. That would mean that someone who could only get 100lbs. off of their chest doing a bench press should be able to support 700lbs. at lockout. Does that even sound remotely reasonable or plausible?

There are truly accommodating resistance units: ARX makes robotic machines. You pre-set the desired rep-speed, ROM, & set length. The so-called 'resistance' is, in fact, literally irresistible: You, futilely, try to speed up the positive & slow/stop the negative. Thus you can use 100% of your available strength through every inch of every rep, from fresh strength to as inroaded as your chosen set-end enables. The computer-monitor graphs&records every split-second of effort. Your strength exhibited at the leg-press's extended position will ASTOUND you. Because the machine keeps moving no matter how little (or no) force you exert, there's no concept of failure. You'll go WAY past traditional failure, possibly too far past to stand up if your set's too long.

Ok, let's say that the x3 provides optimal resistance when the band is fully extended. It most certainly does NOT provide the best resistance throughout most of a full-range rep, & uselessly-low resistance at the starting point. Thus, it'd be best to do one concentric rep, & then hold the fully stretched band isometrically. But wait, why bother with a band?, just push or pull isometrically, as hard as you can, on ANYTHING. You can't precisely, progressively measure the band's resistance anyway. Actually, there are monitored isometric pieces now available, so you'd be able to measure progress BETTER than with bands.

How does he work-around this?: By omitting the fact that: 1/Every strongman/powerlifter who ever used a band, had it attached to a heavy barbell, & 2/The only pro-band study compared training w/weights to training w/weights *&* bands.

Defenders of bands refer to how high the resistance in strong position, not realizing this admits that most of the rep is a waste of time. These people should find a gym w/a power rack, place the bar in their strong range, load it up to the 'weight' their band supposedly stretches to, & lift the damn bar. Good luck.

That’s counterproductive to what the bands and bars are/do.

@@TJ-hw9jr I don't know what your post means. The actual weight supplies the best resistance at the start of a rep, the band supplies the best resistance at the end of a rep. This has worked well for many successful powerlifters.

Best way to grow muscle is by adding very small amounts to the load per session. Bands can't accomplish this.

As one ADDS a little iron every week, one LIFTS a little more iron every week. Claiming that the subject isn't getting stronger is just plain nuts.

Do weights build muscle? YES.

Even a 1/4" difference in tendon insertion multiplies strength. J's "opposite end" insertion is cartoonish BS.

He got FAT from lifting weights while on TRT? How'd THAT happen?

The only study that supports DrJ's claim compared weights-only with weights PLUS bands.

Doc JJ is an inch deep and a mile wide! Was that the rugby injury?? Seriously, I like this guy and think it's entertaining how people feel the need to attack him. "Weightlifting is a waste of time..." Genius marketing and accurate when one complete fatigue set with variable resistance and constant tension will fulfill the minimum dose and response. People get ticked off because they've been hitting the gym for decades with nothing to show for it. Buy the X3 system you cheap bastards! You'll see results in far less time.

Bands:RAMPING resistance, a POOR version of variable. The reason 'strong' position's so many times stronger than 'weak' position: Weak position's ZERO. If a band's heavy enough to properly resist the early range, it's impossible to finish a full-range rep./Jumping off of a 14" step gives you 4.2. Dr J's bone-building machine won't invoke 4.2 if the old ladies (the ones who actually NEED this), don't push hard enough, (& they tend to not).

Gotta wonder what % of X3 users leave it under the bed? Probably more than 20%.

Dr J lies: Sure, footballers use variable resistance, but NOT bands, UNLESS, they're attached to some heavy barbells. Otherwise variable resistance comes from cammed machines.

wait....I just got to the end. he actually compared his personality to trump. I can't believe it. You're the best Mike, but I just threw up in my mouth. And I'm a lifetime Republican.

Appreciate it, my friend. Just like the Pres, I think you're either going to like Dr. J or hate him. Might be too harsh, but I'm sure there's some middle ground as well.

@@hybridresistance I get your point Mike. I don't hate anyone. I just become disgusted by exaggerating or any form of dishonesty. If this man said something plausible like "you can get good results from any form of stregnth training", I would have an ounce of respect for him. But it's that bizarre "only I can fix it attitude", that so many people find absurd. Any one who ever exercised with consistency knows you can change your body for the better. It's obviously true. X3 is a nice system, but this dude is out there bizarre, as if his system is the only way to train, period. Your channel is my favorite because of your integrity, and you seem quite honorable. Thanks for that Mike.
