Doctor Livesey, who's become a huge meme, from the brilliant and ridiculous 1988 Soviet-Ukrainian Treasure island film enters the scene for the fist time. With English subtitles.
It is actually a reccuring joke in the cartoon. The way narrator says "not married"(in a way narrators from Russian detective programs often pronounce something like "he died") implies that if he had a wife he probably would not be so cheerful, optimistic and extraverted.)
This man is truly deserving of the title of Gigachad: - Endlessly cheerful and positive (always smiling) - A healthy amount of cynicism - A doctor first and foremost (takes care of you even if you're a waste) - Professional yet relaxed - Clever and humourous - Tries to get you off alcohol - Is on time
@@lucasmatthiessen1570 Treasure Island characters' dossiers were a parody on typical Soviet crime/detective films, where there would be the same looking dossier with criminal's information, including their marital status.
@@peachesandcream22in the novel, Livesey was a soldier before becoming a doctor or was a military doctor, i don't remember well. That would explain his abilities
Whenever I feel sad or depressed, I always come back to this, and remember that Dr. Livesey isn't married or has a girlfriend, and he is still very happy with himself :)
I'm tired of this belief that you will be "a miserable spinster with 40 cats", if you choose to be marriage- and child-free. Dr. Livesey (maybe not yet) didn't marry or had kids but was still happy, because he did his favourite job and was social.
@@peachesandcream22people only think that because they assume if someone hasnt married or has no children that theyre "loose" or that theyd, in laymans terms, prefer meaningless activity (ifykwim) instead of seeking monogamous love. Its an assumption, yes, but not without good reason.
@@Teknanam While more literally accurate, both ultimately amount to the same thing, so the other translation is really the preferable one since it rolls off the tongue better.
As someone who has read the Treasure Island books since my childhood in Nigeria, this is one of the most accurate(ish) depictions of Dr. Livesy i have seen😂 Most people forget that in the book, he was a hardened military veteran. Him being a chad is pretty accurate
I love how people phrase the “rum and death mean the same to you” quote like it’s some badass catchphrase when he’s literally just telling a dude to stop drinking
That's because non-drinking always used to be reffered to being wimp and weak, that's why they created an extremely badass character who can fight bunch of pyrates and smell flower same time to promote non-drinking. Because really, when did you ever hear for alcoholic that is good fighter, or strong, or enything good? They barely walk, had headaches, shallow breathing from arythmia (to quick heartbeats), are depressed, totally can't say "no" to theri addiction, not to mention mental state similar to schizophrenia that is characterized by extremely paranoya, ultra-realistic nightmares and suicidal thoughts! Then you start to lose clue between reality and scary imagination and you feel like protagonist of horror movie - that's what alcoholism is like!
Yes, John Silver's lines are much more badass. "Take a cutlass, he who dares, and I'll see the color of his insides, crutch and all, before this pipe is empty."
Fun fact: in the original novel, he even treated and tried to help every injured or sick pirate, even if they were his enemies. The guy never forgot his Hippocratic Oath.
Yeah, it's sometimes very surprising since cartoons from any other region are obscure or not talked about in the west so that leaves the door open for people to find stuff from other countries that they never heard of before.
I was born in 1996 in Germany but I lived in Russia with my uncle for a bit when I was 5. He introduced me to this and we would watch treasure island every rainy day. I never forgot it but couldn't remember the show name. It's bringing back good memories. 😭
The movie does that some times. It lifts lines directly from the book (in which Billy Bones does indeed have a stroke) without having the animation match. Another part has Captain Smollett declare that there are seven of them (against nineteen, as the doctor immediately points out). There are only four in the movie.
He lifted the captain up with two fingers the same way you pick up a rotting banana peel to toss in the trash. He wanted to touch as little of him as possible.
@@kurty4260 ты будешь учить меня моему языку? Здравствуйте, это что-то вроде вежливого способа сказать привет, в то время как Hello there, больше звучит как "Привет тебе"
I love how he first appears. Jim calls for a doctor and Livesey just... materializes from behind a door and introduces himself, implying that Jim doesn't even know who he is
The closest thing to his smiling fading is when he sort of nods off in a carriage. The rest of the time, he's smiling. Not always grinning, but definitely smiling.
@@user-vy9mk7um1b And briefly when the short guy talks to Silver because the first thing he says is, "We are seeking the treasure," or something to that effect. Livesey exchanges a surprised look with Jim. He knew the guy would blab, but not so quickly
“The words “rum” and “death” should mean the same thing to you! Do you understand?” Why has this not even been mentioned in the lists of The Top Greatest Quotes of All Time!? And Livesey is 100% correct on this being a doctor!
When I was a little boy, my dad bought me a VHS cassette “Treasure island”. At first time I watched it three times, it was magnificent moment of my childhood. And then I met Doctor Livesey, a man who tought me to be optimistic, never surrender and not to be afraid of difficulties. If I could know that my hero of childhood would become the greatest chad of the World
Yeah, like Valentin said and I already answerd in another tread: "These "portraits" of the protagonists are basically a quite clever parody of the veeery popular soviet tv film Seventeen Moments of Spring which takes place during WWII and all the protagonists, most of them SS/SD officers, are presented this way. Like it's their "personal file"? This film was quite a phenomenon in the USSR and so was the voice of the narrator (actor Yefim Kopelyan), so they just did a parody of it in Treasure Island some 15 years later"
English Dub: "There we go, yes, yes, this, this, here we are, let´s take a look" Original Dub: "ALL RIGHT , LET'S RESCUE THIS TOTAL WASTE OF H U M A N L I F E"
In the book, Jim(the protagonist)‘s father was dying of an illness at the beginning of the story, and Dr. Livesey was the one taking care of him, so when Billy Bones had his stroke, Livesey came by soon after to continue treating the father. Since the cartoon took out Jim’s dad, they just have Livesey materialize right as he’s called.
I've never heard about this character before, but i did now...and it's incredibly well designed,it have a charismatic voice,a confident posture, with obscure and psychopathic behavior, it's brilliant. And i think the most of the people agree with me on this due to the recent reaction of the internet to him
@@zsupersaiyan He tells people they're dying with a disquieting grin on his face and laughing constantly. When noting symptoms, he says, "Good, good, good" or "Excellent..." There is something not right with him. It's just that he not right in just the right ways for him to be an incredible character.
Это же надо ... создать такой МУЛЬТФИЛЬМ, который будет популярен по всему миру !!! И герои которого будут разрывать своей харизмой ) Это шедевр Советской Мультипликации, а голос Доктора Ливси - это лютый топ !!!
I love this so much! I can't help but laugh just from the Doctor Livesey being a huge chad him picking up the drunk Captain like a rag doll with two fingers!! Against all odds managing to keep a random skull in his small pocket AND a bottle of rum just to taunt the alcoholic Captain, smiling as he tells him he's going to die. And somehow appearing at the door on command, (Jim calls for a Doctor, but then Livesey introduces himself and they've never met?!?!?) P.S. How did Livesey know Jim's name at the end and the final laugh MY GOD that final laugh hahaha
In the shot at 0:38 he's holding a pair of glasses, but he never actually wears any. I think this means that he brings a pair of glasses around just so he can do that
Exactly , as a Russian i can confirm that there are a lot of memes in Russian internet about Livesey character description actually being a lot darker than it appears on the show .
@@ScrewBallTheAlien I mean, considering he takes every serious thing as a laughing matter with a giant grin on his face... unnerving is a mild description imo
I feel like he could be the main character of an anime, where he has a profound impact on everyone around him, but throughout the show you're never 100% sure if he's on your side or not
then I recommend to watc "Ух ты говорящая рыба". I don’t know if you will understand everything that will be said there, but it’s worth it) Подтверждаю как парень, который рос на подобных мультфильмах)))
I'm a native speaker of russian language and I really love the play of Livsey's voice actor. I don't envy people, who can't feel the beauty of oringinal language, because it's really amazing. In comparison with subtitles, I can say, that true russian speaking Livsey way more cooler and complicated character, that english Livsey. Very bad for english speakers, that they can't fully understand the real Livsey's personality. Livsey's voice actor done a great job, but the main job was done by a russian language and its versatility No disrespect for english language, and english speakers. Love you all
Whoever decided to bring them back as a meme just unlocked my childhood memory I remember those characters and I just LOVED them so much as a kid when I used to watch TV it was so funny the way they spoke the way it was animated it just filled my heart with warm hapiness and now that it came back as a meme all around the world it makes me even happier
What I really like about the voice acting for Livesey is you can tell he’s smiling while speaking. In fact, you can almost hear that he’s reading the lines through his teeth in order to make it sound like the Doctor’s expressions.
0:27 Not everyone will know, but this is a parody of the very popular Soviet spy drama "17 Moments of Spring" about a Russian mole inside the SS at the end of WWII. When some of the characters are introduced, their file appears on screen and the narrator reads a biography.
Holy hell, I remember actually watching this cartoon when I grew up in Gdynia (Poland) Had no idea what they were talking about (they spoke russian, duh) but I remember that Livesey made me laugh so badly due to him being such a cheerful person. A few years later me and my buds still make subtle references to this cartoon, specially when one of us are drunk. I guess laughter really is the best medicine.
@@accelriderx2931 Yeah it is. «17 Moments of Spring» is a movie about the soviet spy behind the german lines in 1945. It had character introductions disguised as SS Gestapo report Treasure Island refers to that part of the series (17 MoS is not a movie, it's a 12 episode serial)
Dr. Livesey was a chad before it became a thing. And he still deliver it in full power... And his laugh - it's priceless. Fighting on swords with 3 opponents and enjoying the flower - I can do it. Lift a big man with one hand without problems - I may do it. Give diagnosis on many patients with smile about pretty bad/deadly problems - It's my daily practice.
It's the first time I've seen part of the movie without any editing, I'm passionate about old animated movies and I'm used to this feeling of strangeness that comes with it. But something makes me uncomfortable with Dr.Livesey, I don't know if it's because of the Russian voice I'm not used to or that smile that never leaves and goes from end to end of his face, but at the same time, is a character with such exaggerated characteristics that it is charming, I think I will stay in this "love and hate" relationship about this character.
**Introduces himself** **Immediately diagnoses the captain with a stroke rather than physical trauma** **Calls him a waste of life** **Tells the Captain to stop drinking rum** **Refuse to elaborate further** **Leaves** What a unit.
