South Bay Soaring Society members appreciate Dr. Mark Drela’s contributions to our hobby, but Kyle decided it was finally time too shine additional light on what this remarkable MIT professor has accomplished in the field of aviation. Just his freely available airfoils (wing cross sections) and airfoil analysis software alone would be enough to improve the performance of our sailplanes over the years, but his deep research into human powered flight, model sailplane design, build technics, hand launch gliders, flexible/rotating wings, and commercial aviation all are improving aviation for our hobby and the world.
Kyle will review his key accomplishment in his talk including:
• Early very small scale rubber powered models
• Indoor hand launch glider record
• Human powered flight records and prizes
• Current holder of fastest self-propelled human in a boat
• Key designs in discus launch gliders (DLG), thermal duration, and Rudder Spoiler Elevator (RES) gliders
• Aviation analysis software
• Design of the commercial airliner of the future
Dr. Drela, typically has a hobby interest, a consulting contract or an MIT class in a branch of aviation and then proceeds to invent the software, prototypes, and designs to takes them a level that few in the world could ever come close to matching. Come here this talk and you will know how lucky we are Dr. Drela has a keen interest in our hobby as well as all things aeronautical.

Mark Drela has touched many lives, mine included. I have the utmost respect for him as a scientist and a human being. This video was a nice tribute to Mark. Aside from the Apogee, his other designs fit a contested class for Charles River Radio Controllers (CRRC) and later for the ESL, allowing him to test his glider (airfoils) designs in a competitive environment. Again, excellent job, Kyle, and thank you for sharing.

Thanks Kyle - an excellent engaging talk! I came back to model flying over the last couple of years, and to DLG recently, and while I was aware of the fact Dr Drela was someone special, I had no idea of all the stuff he has done. Thanks for sharing that with us, and of course thanks to Dr Drela - we are indebted!

I love how clearly you can see the influence of the Dedalus project in the overall form of the Supergee series, Allegro, and Bubble Dancer. The tail, wing aspect ratio and form, and moments are very similar. But hey, if something works, stick with it. It’s hard to mess the perfection that is Drela’s work.

Excellent lecture! I think F3-RES is a great idea, hope it catches on everywhere. I think the F3-RES name is now standard, since the class has nothing to do with F3B. In terms of size, weight and general proportions, these planes are similar to F1A, i.e. the old free-flight Nordic A/2 class of my youth, but of course they fly faster and flatter, and the construction is largely constrained to wood. Hi-start launching is a great idea, both for keeping down costs and for allowing lighter construction. This is a return to what model soaring used to be, and the simple rules should prevent the costly arms race we have seen in most model classes. Mark Drela's Allegro-Lite set the pattern. I personally saw in 1981 the beginning of the end of classic woodies when I used to fly my Paragon (with Hi-start) on the same field near Victoria BC as the Canadian F3B team were practising with their 36-VOLT winches and Austrian-inspired Kevlar ships. They so terrified everyone at the 1981 World Championships in California that FAI brought in all kinds of new rules and even created a whole new class, F3J, which was more thermal-oriented and used human-powered towing. Now both F3B and F3J gliders are expensive mouldies, as are F3K (DLG's).

I'd rather be happy than competitive. :) Give me balsa or give me death.

Nice video, thanks. It looks like Bubble Dancer is scaled down Daedalus :-)
