yo - I know you didn't get to deeply into it, but I heard that fluoxetine (Prozac) provides a potent neuroprotective effect for the myelin sheaths with exposure to MDMA or reg met.Ham(Phetamines). Trying to recall the source but it was from trustworthy I believe (Shulgin maybe?)
Tim, scroll down past chapters, to Transcript. Choose it and "show transcript." At the part of the screen below the podcast, it parses out time-stamps and the phrases or sentences, and keeps up with the audio in the podcast. It's a great tool especially with lengthy podcasts like this one.
I’ve discovered an extremely effective sleep remedy. I listen to a podcast! Within minutes I fall asleep. If I wake during the night, the same remedy works like magic. I think it works so effectively is that paying attention to the podcast turns off my busy mind. If I don’t turn on a podcast, my thoughts turn to all the things I have to do, all the things that frustrate me, etc etc. and I don’t fall asleep! Podcasts are free and they work like magic for me.
That’s the issue . You don’t seem to be ever hearing anything useful . Half baked knowledge is bad dangerous as in your case . You must be a half-baked person . Don’t come to RU-vid for cure. Admit yourself in a good place
I remember reading this book last year on a late night then fell asleep, woke up then the next thing I was reading in the book was Mat Walker saying “Should you feel drowsy and fall asleep while reading the book, unlike most authors, I will not be disheartened” I went straight to bed 😅
Matthew Walker, a.k.a "The sleep Cardinal" A living legend in my opnion. Always grab his book or watch/listen to podcasts where he is the guest, if my sleep declines.
I love Matthew. And I could listen to him all day. But please people just try and get off coffee before deciding that it’s a health benefit and that you want to continue consuming it. Just by getting off coffee for some weeks you will come to realise that actually it’s the coffee that is using…or I should say, consuming you! Don’t rely on stimulants for your energy! And by the way you can get more anti oxidants in a few berries than you will ever get in a cup of coffee!
“Priming” my brain with pre sleep meditation sessions invariably results speeding up sleep onset, fewer waking interruptions & perceived restfulness. Also noted are higher instances of lucid dreaming. No idea why this is so consistent, but it’s noticeable to the point where it’s now habitual to meditate before & after sleeping
I've learned from firsthand experience that one of the single worst things for sleep is vitamin B6 over RDA levels. I learned this the hard way by taking multi-vitamins. And over 6 yrs slowly developed the worst sleep of my life. Extreme insomnia. Complete lack of REM sleep. Many other health issues. I learned that vitamin B6 acts as a direct nerve & neurotoxin. It's half life is 34 days. So it slowly accumulates and can accumulate even from high B6 foods. As levels slowly rise over years or decades... this surplus is stored in muscles & nerves. As you can't sweat it out. And you can't pee it out quick enough if you're eating over RDA. It's the nature of the half life. Long story short since going on a low B6 diet after 9 months now I'm sleeping better than I have in 10 yrs. No amount of melatonin or magnesium or anything came close to what a low B6 diet did for my sleep.
I researched this and found nothing to support it. The opposite in fact; deficiencies in B6 can lead to increase in homocysteine, a chemical that harms cognitive functioning and increased impairment. To all: please share source to substantiate this claim that excess B6 is harmful. Thanks
Commentsabout needing time stamps: From title of podcast scroll down past Chapters to Transcript. Hit "Show Transcript." As you watch podcast, the transcript will display below where comments would. Time stamps and the audio are listed and scroll with the audio, sonit's REALLY easy to know where time and subject-wise where you are in a long podcast. I love it!❤
I have started a business specifically offering time stamp services to content creators. Time stamps should be mandatory. They’re extremely helpful for information heavy content like this one. People want the ability to go back and revisit segments that interest them.
Valerian has been a friend to me for years - I use it to stay relaxed all day sometimes too, but it can make you feel drowsy and groggy. I recently found out that Depakote is a synthetic version of a constituent of Valerian. It's a powerfully calming plant.
A bigger challenge for many, is the problem of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). It's not about getting to sleep, as these people are exhausted and sleep deprived. It's the body that wakes them up every few minutes throughout the night. Is there any help for those with RLS?
This is a medical problem, only barely addressed by sleep behaviors. See a physician and do some research on diet and hydration. But at the end of the day, it is a medical problem.
Nothing worked for me until a doctor prescribed Pramipexole. It has been lifesaving for me as I truly couldn't live or function without it. My RLS is very severe and I've had it about 50 years (since 15).
Here's the way I used to improve my sleep quality. I have four kids a full-time job and every day at the end of the day I'm so exhausted I sleep like the dead. It really only takes one kid to accomplish that goal but definitely for you've got it all licked
Exhausted sleep isn't biologically restorative. They have done the research on that. And I'll bet you know that, because you don't awaken massively refreshed. You awaken because one of them climbed into your bed!
I used to simulate the sensation of rocking in my mind while going to sleep as a kid. Didn't learn it from anyone just naturally did it. Interesting there's a sleep device that does it many years later
Fantastic conversation guys! As someone who is in a constant battle with waking up at 2/3 am most nights, this has been really insightful. Thanks again.
Thanks very much for a great podcast focused around real sleep issues and you own personal experience. Practical solutions, most of which can be implemented without MD's.
I'd be interested to know Matt's take on what impact eating within a certain time of falling asleep has on sleep quality.. Most research suggests it does, shame the expert didn't touch on this to give us a definitive answer-maybe he will in part II. Great episode!
Found this guys book at the local library and googled him and found he had been on Joe Rogan a year prior to me finding the book, had never heard of him. My “criticism” would be that since it’s such a boring area of study, it feels like some things are slightly exaggerated to make it seem more interesting but I think this is overall a good thing since otherwise nobody would want to listen!
I think it's a fascinating area of study, and the next installment will be even more interesting, if they are going to cover lucid dreaming, sleep learning, memory, sex, and creativity. There is still so much to discover about our sleeping lives.
My perfect combo for ~3-4 hours deep, 2 hours REM, and 2 hours light (tracked w/ Apple Watch and AutoSleep) = L-Theanine 300mg (any brand) Magnesium L-Threonate - 144mg (has to be this form of mag, brand doesn't matter, patented), Boswellia Serrata extract from NOW, 500mg, and 200mg apigenin (I used nootropics depot)... oh, and definitely *earplugs*, this is also achieved while sleeping during the day for my overnight shift. Couldn't imagine how effective it would be with a normal sleep schedule!
@@thomasweitz2118 Threonate is supposed to be really good because only it and bisglycinate cross the blood brain barrier, so try out the bisglycinate if you still want the glycine part too. I had more success with Threonate personally, tried them both.
I love boswellia! Inflamma-rest from Source Naturals was a real life saver for me when I was battling Lyme, Boswellia one of the primary ingredients in it.
Another issue (like sleep apnea) is a physical "interference" of some sort. (I.E., I HAVE A LONG TONGUE), Asthma, etc. Also, what about vitamins, supplements or nutritional additions that would help? How about midnight-shift workers, how about body position? How about CHANTINGor singing before sleep? You can open a window by your head. Is 9:00 pm or 10:00 or 12:00 or is it personal? Why do you youtubers say: CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN? PHYSICIANS ARE COMPLETELY "IGNORANT" OF THESE FACTORS! IT'S ABOUT CYA, I GET THAT... BUT DOCTORS ARE COMPLETELY IGNORANT OF HEALTH PREVENTION!
they say it because they HAVE TO! Or they can get sued if some one follows what they are saying and has an adverse reaction. We all know the med industrial complex is almost worse than useless in this country. We have to be our own doctors, while they still make trillions per year, and people suffer and die needlessly by the hundreds of thousands every year from pure ignorance.
I haven’t listened to the whole interview yet, so maybe this gets discussed at some point, but does anyone know if Matthew is wearing an Oura Ring on his finger, for sleep tracking? I was thinking of getting one, and it would help (add even more credibility to the product) to know if Matthew wears/uses one.
Hi Tim, love your podcasts! Could you please address the impact of wearing an eye mask and ear plugs during sleeping? Advantages and disadvantages? Thank you! 加油!支持你!
Hi Catherine. I watched an unrelated podcast which was sponsored by Oura, who sells the Oura ring, for sleep tracking. An Oura ring is something you wear on your finger, and it gives you a sleep score (with detailed info) when you wake/get up. I don’t have one, but one of the two podcast hosts said he did some tests and found that when he sleeps with an eye mask and ear plugs, his sleep score is definitely higher (meaning he had a better quality sleep), so he wears those now. Maybe look into that.
This surely makes me nervous being a 12 hr shift overnight Nurse…. Since 2003 raising my children w/ 3-5 hrs of sleep pet night. Things are better 6-7 hrs now the kids are in school:..
I'm awaken several times a night in fight or flight mode, heart beating fast.panic attack? Vegas nerve over stimulated...going to try just 1 cup 1 hr after rising, lots of sunshine and exercise..looking forward to deep sleep, been years...except when heavily medicated
Dr. Walker's book has been mentioned by many to me, and it is on my list to read. My question: has he (or others) done research looking at the prevalence of many of the health issues that have been linked to sleep deprivation to genetic variants linked to being a "deep sleeper"? Are they protected? No one in my family (and my dad and my maternal grand-parents lived into their 90's) showed any signs of cognitive decline - they were sharp until the end. The 23andMe panel indicates that I have a minor allele in the ADA gene that is associated with being a deep sleeper (and I am! It's the getting up part that is a challenge). It seems about 20% of the population carries this variant, and it would add value to some of these associations if health outcomes like Alzheimer's, obesity, etc be assessed by genetic epidemiology (if they haven't been done already). The data has already been collected by direct to consumer genetic testing companies like 23andMe.
Perhaps for round 2, what med do you recommend for sleep during travel say USA to Europe. My father used Serotonin (small dose). Newer recommendations? Thanks.
Oara ring, Apple Watch, Whoop, etc even though they say they report REM, don’t really. I’m starting (again) to work with Neurofeedback specialist in Austin with a take home EEG to get a better handle since my sleep studies show less than 40 minutes REM when, when I’m fortunate to get it. Austin Biofeedback and Neurofeedback institute got a handle on my insomnia years ago and since taking an incorrectly prescribed antibiotic, my REM and cognitive ability is severely negatively impacted.
I LOVE the idea of rocking! I often imagine myself rocking or I go out to my hammock for a peaceful nap. PS didn’t get much sleep tonight because I listened to your podcast all night. The irony!
How about discussing the people who have a genetic predisposition for sleeping lightly? (one if the thing’s identified on 23anMe) My genome suggests that I am a light sleeper (I can remember being this way since childhood) and I’m prone to insomnia- no matter how calm my mind and emotions are, or how good my sleep hygiene is - it’s like - then what can I do?
I've tried hemp tea. Good for sleep while using it. But I've noticed short-term memory loss which Andrew Huberman confirmed as a side effect. When I stop the tea, it takes me 3-4 days to "recover" from insomnia. Because the next few days after stopping the tea I'll have difficulty falling a sleep. So, no to hemp tea.
Fainting goats have myotonia congenita which is a harmless condition that makes the muscles turn hard. I have myotonic muscular dystrophy myself ( which isn't harmless ofc) and many things can cause certain muscles to seize up when it's not expected. And that can be rather embarrassing. When everyone behind you is waiting but your calf muscles siezed up right as you stepped onto the bus, or when you smile and your face muscles lock up that way. It's very short duration, however it's a slow process for the muscles to unlock...it's exactly like when you squeeze a stress ball filled with a clay-like substance and it takes several seconds for the clay to relax.
I just finished a run of prednisone, I didn't sleep but 3 hours at a time, and that was finally falling asleep at 4 am. I'm a natural night owl anyway, but an 8 lb pup doesn't always allow for more than 6 hours sleep, max! And THAT is the best full night's sleep I ever get!
Animals are often huge impediments to sleep. Your dog has a diurnal sleep pattern. Humans don't. Get the dog a bed next to your bed, just like we do with newborns.
The podcast would be greatly enhanced if it wasn't assumed the audience is familiar with all the terms used. What is SOL? What is DARPA? Unless this is a private conversation which you just happened to incidentally share with the public.
Because of neuropathic neck and back pain, my average sleep is 2 hours or none at all and my Fitbit shows it. I have taken prescribed CBD oil 240mg/ml + Terpenes 3% (10ml) Twice daily dose of 10 drops. My Deep and REM sleep were non-existent according to FITbit. I went off it and went onto a prescribed drug (neuropathic not sleeping pill) that gave me Deep and REM sleep but I was in a dopey state all day. So I went off it, and got Wacky Tobacky (under tongue) from a friend, so no idea of CBD & THC levels. I also notice that I eat salty and sugary foods and drinks when I have no sleep. For me it’s because I’m trying to increase my energy… evolution I guess, but I’m aware consciously and unconsciously I just need more sleep. I’m a normal healthy weight. Hope this helps 😊
I just kept thinking, how do the concepts of the time dilation and the contacting someone in a lucid dream go together? Does it necessarily mean that someone who is lucid dreaming lives in the same time dilation as the waking world?
Is there some way you can reduce this to a “set” of shorts? Who has time to listen to 3+ hours? I can’t absorb that much and you have competition from other channels. I’d really like to watch, but 3 hours?!
I understand it may be exciting from the research perspective but there's so much suffering due to Alzheimer's disease that it makes me feel uncomfortable to see somebody grin like that while talking about it...
What does Dr Walker think about Doxepin for sleep. I was given this to use PRN by my sleep provider. (Got diagnosed recently with sleep apnea-haven't gotten C-PAP yet).
Doxepin decreases REM sleep (the kind that benefits emotions and relaxes your body) and can be a risk for teeth grinding, but it has positive actions on falling asleep. The research has been done. Repeatedly.
Host seems to do his best to manipulate Dr Walker to help host promote using drugs. Dr Walker is very qualified to advising how to improve getting better and more quality sleep. Host repeatedly manipulated the guest to discussing drugs.
The reason most 99% watch is becuz the health"sic" care system don't have this knowledge and can't relate....The system makes all of us go else where for help & self care...
I wonder if dysregulation of sleep occurs as early as gestation. My mother was so stressed that she was on Benzos at night, and uppers during the day when I was in her womb. I was never a good sleeper…
Or...whatever stressed her continued to stress her after your birth, and being cared for by an anxious or depressed mother so early in life entrains a baby to be dysregulated right from the start.
yes it can absolutely, - your genetic code is being formed during this time, and even your sense of what the world is like is based mainly on your mother's state
Beware of these podcasts hosting so-called experts. this guy‘s research has been highly criticized. He’s all over the place spewing false hoods and misinformation. And people just take what he says at face value as if it were true. People just need to wise up and realize just because people are all over RU-vid does not mean they know what they’re talking about. Case in point with Matt Walker
i've found after much experimenting that passionflower plus magnesium works for my middle of the night mental chatter. i use a tracker. throwing in some theanine i think also helps. you don't hear much about passionflower but for me it has worked well.
I also have epilepsy and if i get extremely upset can have grand mal episodes. im allergic to pot n makes me paranoid. i was hoping it would help bc dont like pills but have no choice. exercise n eating well helps but sleep is big factor and im having a lot of trouble.. ps took a purple substance (tiny ) think was called mescaline when a teen three times n my mom told me people lost mids on it so got scared but i still think of the laughing n bliss. something there in i dream on.
@@ivonam3197 Started w/ single core supplements from Reliv International, then added targeted solutions for joint pain, fiber, healthy aging. Now 75, active, no meds.
I watched 4 minutes and leaving now. This made me more nervous where it will affect my sleep even worse lol. I know for a fact that they won't give any new ways to help sleep better than the typical relax, exercise and so on. let me know if the said something new and practical guys
Lyrica, Amitriptyline, dr teals bath salts (ALL are excellent ; esp. Lavender or eucalyptus). AVOID ALL Inflammation causing foods ; sugars, white breads, pastas, rice, very little dairy, chicken, eggs. Hope some of these things help.
Do nada mano tá tão desesperado pra que o Brasil seja notado, seja um professor de inglês, estará intercionalizando a cultura brasileira através do inglês, escrever Brazil aleatoriamente não vai funcionar
When he started talking about goats and it narcolepsy I was like 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨 LMFAOOO I had narcolepsy and cataplexy since I was 15 years old 😂 I transferred schools during my stage of narcolepsy interrupting my life so I was EXTREMELY angry everyday since I had to transfer schools I had worked my ASS off!😤 to make it to my varsity 🏈 team. Finally was respected by the team and coach had my jersey, BOy I had the world in my hands at 15 years old just to transfer to a racist school where literally I was like maybe 7 of the black people in the high school I KID YOU NOT! So I was falling asleep in class and immediately being labeled a druggie and lazy the new black kid with the bad attitude is a druggie .. go figure 😂 but let’s fast forward to me having to use the walls of the school to literally just walk and keep myself up ⬆️ and not collapsing on the floor in front of a bunch of strangers. I was EXTREMELY nervous and had major anxiety and insecure of course as a teenager. I had multiple times where I fell out in class it was SO EMBARRASSING. Imagine being the only colored person in the class that’s a brand new student that keeps falling asleep in class so it’s coming off as I’m a bad person and then BOOM I collapse on the floor 😫 I wanted to die 😞🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ I even remember these kids talking shit about me thinking that I was asleep 😴 meanwhile I’m just paralyzed like a mf and getting angrier and angrier and not even able to defend myself because of good ole cataplexy 😂😞. Thank god for Adrenaline I was able to somehow play football 🏈 and I was switching in and out with the senior starter my first year there :) and I was on adderall at the time. Anyways I’m 27 now on modafinil and it’s ok…. Wouldn’t wish narcolepsy cataplexy on my worst enemy because I am one witty mf 😂 and it’s legit torture I mean TORTURE not being able to defend yourself under verbal attacks meanwhile your looking like you’re having a seizure 😂
