Gotta love Dr. Mike! A brilliant man with an incredible capacity to focus on what matters in his own life. I consider a lot of his political thought useless but only because he is NOT a politician. His views instead reflect a belonging to the increasingly large group of intellectuals who's scientific and philosophical observations breach the overton window (as he put it) which logically necessitate a "libertarian" perspective. That said, it's a shame brilliant people like Dr. Mike feel the need to obfuscate their opinions and keep them lowkey when they are evidently capable of having arrived to such opinions in a reasonable manner. Very few have dared to brace and suffer the threat of cancellation, and the majority have failed. Those who do survive often lapse into a form of audience capture which reduces their original sentiments to ideological mush. I wonder why Dr. Mike-who is smart, strong, and disciplined enough to withstand both traps-decides to self-censor. He's either making really good money, or is really afraid of mobs! Perhaps an invisible butler could answer on his behalf.

14:30 my armature understanding of 'why the enlightenment happened in Europe' wasn't because of Judeo-Christian values as much as the level of hypocritical oppression of historical Judeo-Christian culture. For instance, I'm agnostic, but I was raised Christian. So I tossed the religious aspect but kept the core philosophy: love, forgiveness, non-judgement. Why? Because it was useful and freeing. The religious and mythical qualities of Christianity are hypocritical and full of contradictions. Exodus 20 says thou shall not kill. Leviticus 20 is a list of people you should kill. I think THAT kind of obvious hypocritical contradiction and the European history of Christian Oppression and control, the Inquisition & the Crusades, THAT is a big part of why it was Europe. Dr. Mike had an incredible point about 'universal' values evolving in SE Asia. I think he's right. Social freedom feels good and works. It goes hand in hand economic freedom. It seems logical that a movement of freedom was born in a place of cultural oppression. I think it's that simple. TL;DR: It wasn't the religion that birthed freedom, it was the oppression.

The Enlightenment occurred due to the reintroduction of Greek philosophy back into Europe. This happened via what was then called Al Andalusia and schools that were established by the then Muslim inhabitants, that got these texts from Syrians that were translating Greek texts into Syriac. They got these when the Arabs started spreading and conquering all the regions. It's what led to the Islamic Golden Age that lasted a few hundred years but was beaten back due to mysticism. In either case, Aristotelean philosophy is the ultimate cause of the Enlightenment and not Judeo Christian values.

Dr. Mike is awesome at fitness and getting big, but I think his social science instincts are a littel underdeveloped. For instance at 34:16 he is essentially saying that every intelligent person will more or less come to the same conclusion as he has. I would love to see him be a little more sceptical of his own views. In fact, many intelligent people represent vastly different political ideologies. I find his reasoning.very solid and convincing, but also a bit narrow and way too confident for his "level of expertise". I can almost sense his internal model of how the world works, but I think he has simplified away all of the important complexities and randomness that occur in the real world.

I think it was great that Zoe pushed back on Mike on his view on the Judeo-Christian religion because the term enlightenment presupposes a "dark ages" where everything stagnated which is historically untrue. Not to mention, the beginning of the englightenment that most people woudl refer started with Descartes who was deeply religiously and ended around of the 18th century with figures such as Locke who in his writings had deep Christian values. While the enlightenment may cover multiple values, the main value would be in value of the individual and this too grew out of Christiantiy. So contrary to what Mike mentioned in regards to religion being a method to create tribe, Christianity was actually the emergence of the value of the individual. I also think that it's clear that there are many secular/atheistic movements that are tribal despite not having any form of "spirituality" which is probably easiest seen in Marxism/communism.

@BubbaF0wpend
@BubbaF0wpend Месяц назад
Apart from Hart not sure who you consider "the best", but after hearing from the most popular, at least on protestant/catholic christianity and islam, nobody has been able to put forward anything remotely convincing, at least in favour of their religion being true, which is what I ultimately care about, and I suspect Dr Mike would regard truth also as priority number 1. As for the utility of those religions, they offer nothing I need or want, but I understand many people do find utility/meaning/purpose/hope in them... absolutely fine, long as they keep it to themselves
@CrashMetaReligion1996
@CrashMetaReligion1996 Месяц назад
@@BubbaF0wpend That’s your personal opinion. What you find convincing is kind of a YOU thing. I was a hardcore atheist and materialist. Personal paranormal experiences “which I know you will dismiss” caused me to rethink all of my opinions of the world. I could no longer hold on to that world view. A lot of research into these subjects led me to the perennialist school of philosophy regarding religions and really all belief systems. Mike may walk away from a conversation with Dr Hart still an atheist but I guarantee he will have something to think about. Religion is deeper then many of these pop apologists understand. Somebody like a William Lane Craig mean well but they simply aren’t very impressive. I’m not here to evangelize really. It’s up to everyone what path the desire to take. But Dr Mike really does not understand these religions at all. He has a very basic understanding that causes him to view them with much contempt and see them with not respect.
@BubbaF0wpend
@BubbaF0wpend Месяц назад
Why did you attribute that experience to god x and why are you convinced it was paranormal? As far as not understanding religions goes, what do you mean? Chrsitianity for example, the guy either resurrected or he didn't. The miracles either happened or they didn't. And, absent of empirical evidence of massive claims like these, there's no good reason, for people like Mike and myself anyway, to believe them (faith is a copout), and that's all the understanding needed... if the core claims are likely untrue there's nothing left to "understand" other than some men wrote stuff down that some people find profound. I agree on one thing; WL Craig is certainly not impressive.

China has managed to persist throughout a long stretch of time. But the government 100 years ago, let along 1000 is completely different, and had changed frequently. Not to mention throughout history China has suffered unfathomable governmental and economic calamities costing the lives of millions of people. The current chines government over the last few decades had been utterly regressive (not that it was much better before) and has started clinging to Maoist principles again. There are core values of Chinese government that have persisted for thousands of years through. One of which being the vague idea of mandate under heaven which is currently being used to justify Chinese ethnic and national supremacy and a justification for literal world domination. Just wanted to touch on the bible comment mike made regarding the fact that if you ate shrimp or were gay you were sentenced to death. Firstly, The bible does mention the punishment for being gay to be sentenced to death, but not eating shrimp or pig. There is only a godly punishment for that. Secondly, even though on paper there was a death sentence for being gay and for violating the shabat, very rarely were these punishments ever implemented. It is even stated in the talmud that a court who sentenced a person to death once every 70 years was a cruel court. The talmud was written historically at least 1400 years ago, way before any inlightinmint movement was ever founded. Further more, also mikes comments regarding slavery during those days are not precise. There are literally dozens of different mitzvahs (bible rules) regarding the special rights slaves had during that time. For instance you hade to release a slave after six years. You hade to make sure he has a pillow even if it means you only have one, you have to give it to him. You have to feed him before yourself and many more.

Bad people can also do things that are good for those that they care about, especially when confronted by the bad men of other countries (US) who would like to see you and the people you care about “liberated” like Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Libya and Syria… while their leaders are getting Nobel Peace Prizes and not being subject to Hague war tribunal. I wish he talked more about the natural ways societies decline once they peak. He really praised liberalism, but didn't mention how liberalism makes people depressed, it reduces the tightness of community, and it completely eliminates meaning and purpose. I'm honestly shocked how little he seems to have interacted with theism as a whole. It's profoundly inaccurate to say something like "no educated adult can really entertain classic religion as like a real thing, it's insane, and it's just, like, obvious." Dr. Israetel, how EXACTLY would you like to define educated adults? How about the theoretical physics chair at Cambridge for many years, Dr John Polkinghorne? Obviously, Cambridge theoretical physics is, to be frank, not a big deal, he's probably a moron? Ok, well, how about Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, Dr. John Lennox? Who likes math anyway? He's probably uneducated as well, and doesn't have a critical thinking mind, you don't need that in his position.. Or perhaps the former Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, Dr Francis Collins? Genes aren't even complicated, I don't know why I bring that up. Synthetic Organic Chemist Dr James Tour? Yeah, you know what, cells are just little bags of liquid or whatever, it's not that impressive to use chemistry to alter cellular structures and behavior.. let's see.. ok how about someone like Dr Stephen Meyer, of the Discovery Institute? Dr. William Lane Craig, and Dr. Sean McDowell, J. P. Moreland, philosophers? Dr. Michael Heiser and Dr Michael Brown, both ancient near eastern and semitic scholars who know upwards of 10 ancient languages? Dr Craig Keener, new testament and greek scholar/historian, professor, who wrote a massive 2 volume set on verifiable miracles? Dr Mike Licona and Dr Gary Habermas, both world class historians.. Maybe you'd want some people a little more oldschool.... ok how about everyone on the following list: Robert Boyle, Leonhard Euler, Michael Faraday, James Clerk Maxwell, Gregor Mendel, George Lemaitre, Isaac Newton, Carl Friedrich Gauss, George Washington Carver, Blaise Pascal, Charles Babbage, Werner Heisenberg, Samuel Morse, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Renee Descartes, Augustine..... You're going to need to explain how all of them are uneducated. Go Ahead.. I'll wait.

@@chaseblauvelt7008 I don't have an exhaustive understanding of each of their stances on correct exegetical textual criticism and hermaneutics, but most of the philosophers, scholars, and historians I've cited, and many if not all of the scientists and mathematicians have a high view of scripture, and regard the words as inspired by God, but not without respect to the boundaries of genre. For instance, no one thinks the trees have hands and clap them. That's poetic language. Many of these people believe that God guided evolution, for many reasons, one of which being that there's a mountain of mathematical difficulty in espousing that we have the bio-diversity we do by means of natural selection and random mutation. if there was one mutation per second since the beginning of the universe there still would not be enough time to produce the kind of genetic variance and speciation we see in the world, and that's less than 5 billion years old, not 13.8 billion. Random mutation produces noise, not new information, and especially not unimaginably and irreducibly complex, multi-stage, interdependent systems of structures and processes that had to concurrently spontaneously appear (because they rely on each other to be useful traits to have in the organism) for no other reason than randomness in multiple organisms who could reproduce at the same location, enough times for that to be passed down to offspring that miraculously didn't die off before producing offspring.. etc etc. It's much more likely there was an intelligence to guide and author things along the way, while still using evolution as a mechanism.

@@BubbaF0wpend I've seen the kind of interactions that Aron Ra and Dave Farina have, and I equate them to people like Ken Ham or Kent Hovind on the theism side. they're absolutely 100% not serious about engaging in good faith with those who have opposing ideas, and I cannot tolerate the rude, dismissive, uncharitable attitude that any of these men bring to conversations. Dave, for instance, had a "debate" with Dr James Tour (that you're able to go watch on youtube) in which he spent most of the time simply insulting Dr Tour, while Dr Tour was continually just asking for a clear refutation, to take the chalk and start showing the chemistry. Farina just replied with ad hominem and citations to titles of papers which Tour had also read and did not see any chemistry to prove the points in, so the challenge remained unanswered. Aron Ra is another bully, quite frankly, and thinks that by screaming at his interlocutor and claiming there is no evidence he can call that a debate, and showed how absolutely closed to having useful discussion he was when he was up against Michael Jones of Inspiring Philosophy. Ken Ham and Kent Hovind are just as closed minded and refuse to interact with the evidence, they're smug and wholly impervious to pleas to simply interact with the points being made to them, calling anyone who disagrees with their specific interpretation of scripture names, and accusing them of compromising on the word of God and bowing to "man's science" which is the most absurd thing I can think of, especially when the arguments brought to them at that moment have nothing to do with the modern scientific evidence, but simply trying to appeal to their supposed high view of scripture, citing from the text how the pre-existence of physical matter in Genesis 1 is not only implied but ASSUMED from the very first verses. Then you try to bring Scientific evidence to them and they're even further from hearing anything anyone has to say. If you want me to take someone seriously, cite someone who has some basic respect for those around them and for productive good faith argumentation.

Both of these people have such a superficial understanding of geopolitics and history. Very good point about developed society being based on enlightenment values. Why is Putin invading Ukraine? Mike seems genuinely confused. NATO incorporating more and more countries across the European plain ring a bell? The totally non-defensible stretch of land that has posed an invasion risk to Russia since its inception. Does having a warm water port in crimea hold any value to frozen port Russia? Saying that Russia invaded Ukraine for absolutely no reason is completely ludicrous. This guy has a lot of strange opinions that are not particularly well founded. A very important foundation for the enlightenment was ancient greek philosophy, which was probably more important than the christian tradition. This gets no mention at all. Its also somewhat of a unfounded claim, that all westerners have the same idea of the good life. Currently there is a political conflict raging between nationalists and globalists in the western world. This cleavage is noticable in the realms of culture and politics, and the differences in vision about the good society are not negligible. The good doctor makes a big deal out of all his non-pc opinions that threaten to make him cancellable. yet at the same time he praises the west for being great with "freedom" and "democracy". He does not seem to understand that cancel culture is a direct assault on these very freedoms. His opinions on politics and philosophy are not impressive.
