I really love this episode. Acknowledging suicide in Maori men. I believe with each generation our woman are getting independently stronger, not depending on the male in a old school way, which is allowing the male time to focus on within himself, the thing is the male is facing pain from generations before him. Layers upon layers of pain that he now is concurring to release the hurt from those before him. Maori have been through so much but we are strong. Men are facing themselves in a new light, which is tender and unfamiliar. Often making them feel weak. No one is more powerful than another. We are all in this together. -Nyre grace

Great podcast! I often wonder also, what kind of ancestor I will be, so the whakatauki you shared “He mokopuna ahau, he tupuna ahau” had me nodding in absolute agreeance. This is something close to me as I look back, take note of where I am, and then look forward to my descendants. Ae, I look at it more from my connection to the cosmos, and then my feet firmly on the ground. What am I connected too, and what am I birthing into reality as mana wahine. While sitting with a very wise Matakite he shared “who do you think our ancestors were thinking of when they were looking out over the raging seas, they were thinking of us”. The raging seas in todays context for me is a metaphor for the state that some of our people are living in, the turmoil. So I ask myself, what is my contribution today, for tomorrow. Ae, knowledge is beautiful, and definitely a privilege. I believe that we own nothing, not even our thoughts, and where they come from is up for interpretation. When I am working, and asking for guidance in things that pertain to Te Ao Māori, then I know that everything that comes in thought, feeling, inner knowing or another person, is gifted and I am that “conduit”, or privy to be in an audience listening. Kei te tika, you have to be humble enough also, to receive it, make it apart of you, translate it and then gift it back out into the world. Peta Kelly in “Earth is hiring” talks about Jeaniius. Your purpose, passion, gifts, and genius all combined in one. Your soul signature. I think this is fantastic! Your get what you get, and then make it apart of you which is then filtered out back into the world. We are all here contributing with what we are given, and staying humble keeps our mahi honest. You know your Jeaniius because it moves and inspires others. You know other people’s Jeaniius because it moves and inspires you…. Straight to the feelz, for real! Im so glad I got to get some (colonized) time this morning to listen to this kōrero. Was definitely privy to be witness to such insight. Tēnā rawa atu korua.

In the Maori culture back in the 17th/18th century did they get married (or at-least an unofficial union ceremony witnessed by 1-2 elders) before they had sexual intercourse with their partner and had children? Was curious because if they were very careful not to drink alcohol and were cautious of what food they ate, would HIGHLY likely guess they made some sort of commitment to be with a partner even if unofficially in from of an elder witnessing the union like many other overseas cultures to like in Arabia/Asia/India etc. but not necessarily getting married on paper and registering it Seems like quite a lot of Polynesians/Islanders now a days in UK/AUS/NZ live with their partner out of wedlock, or have they done some sort of commitment/union unofficial ceremony so that for example if they have a child it will not be out-of-wedlock (illegitimate)?
