This about this doctor. He is a Latino that grew-up in a small Texas town. Think about how many obstacles he must have overcome as he went through college, then through medical school, then his residency & passing his boards to become a pediatrician. And, after all that, where did he go? He went back to his home town of Uvalde, Texas. Well done, Dr. Guerrero!

There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms, and this number is not disputed. U.S. population 324,059,091 as of Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Do the math: 0.00925% of the population dies from gun related actions each year. Statistically speaking, this is insignificant! What is never told, however, is a breakdown of those 30,000 deaths, to put them in perspective as compared to other causes of death: • 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws • 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified • 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons - gun violence • 3% are accidental discharge deaths So technically, "gun violence" is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100. Still too many? Well, first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation? • 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago, no NRA members were involved • 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore, no NRA members were involved • 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit, no NRA members were involved • 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington D.C., no NRA members were involved So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause. Almost all the criminals and killers were left wing, liberals that voted for Biden. This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation, or about 75 deaths per state. That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others. For example, California had 1,169 and Alabama had 1. Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California, of course, but understand, so it is not guns causing this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So if all cities and states are not created equally, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths. Are 5,100 deaths per year horrific? How about in comparison to other deaths? All death is sad and especially so when it is in the commission of a crime but that is the nature of crime. Robbery, death, rape, assault all is done by criminals and thinking that criminals will obey laws is ludicrous. That's why they are criminals. But what about other deaths each year? • 40,000+ die from a drug overdose-THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT! • 36,000 people die per year from the flu, far exceeding the criminal gun deaths • 34,000 people die per year in traffic fatalities(exceeding gun deaths even if you include suicide) Now it gets good: • 200,000+ people die each year (and growing) from preventable medical errors. You are safer in Chicago than when you are in a hospital! • 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. It’s time to stop the double cheeseburgers! So what is the point? If Biden and the anti-gun movement focused their attention on heart disease, even a 10% decrease in cardiac deaths would save twice the number of lives annually of all gun-related deaths (including suicide, law enforcement, etc.). A 10% reduction in medical errors would be 66% of the total gun deaths or 4 times the number of criminal homicides......Simple, easily preventable 10% reductions! So you have to ask yourself, in the grand scheme of things, why the focus on guns? It's pretty simple.: Taking away guns gives control to governments. The founders of this nation knew that regardless of the form of government, those in power may become corrupt and seek to rule as the British did by trying to disarm the populace of the colonies. It is not difficult to understand that a disarmed populace is a controlled populace.

@@larryross1819 What you are missing, Larry, is the tremendous cost of each mass shooting--the cost to the families and friends of the dead and injured, the trauma to the communities, the burden to the healthcare system, the overtime in police work and forensics, the costs to the judicial system and for incarcerating perpetrators, the economic costs to businesses, churches, malls, medical centers who lose business because people become afraid of going outside their homes. One of the things the founders of this country didn't recognize, indeed couldn't have recognized, is that the government can bring its citizenry to its knees simply by bringing down the electrical grid, no guns involved. All the AR15s in the world can't fight that. It happened in Texas, and everything came to a stop. Governments already have control. It's very 19th-Century to think that an AR15 with a 60-round drum is going to keep the government from exercising control over you. What we learned today is that they are effective at decapitating schoolchildren, in a matter of moments.

@@larryross1819 Oh please. Gun violence in the U.S. far exceeds levels in other rich nations. Other European countries have strict gun laws & high gun ownership like Switzerland. They have strict regulations on gun ownership across the region, and getting permission usually requires jumping through layers of bureaucracy, including a psychological assessment and a training process, which you don't really find in the US. They also have major differences in mentality & gun culture compared to the US. Switzerland’s gun laws are designed to help protect its citizens from outside attacks, while the US is busy tearing itself apart from within (as commonly cited defense against "government tyranny"). Switzerland arms its militia with the understanding that those weapons are for the protection of their country, not against their country (national freedom as oppose to personal freedom in the US). High levels of social trust towards each other, low crime rates and internationally high levels of trust and confidence in police and social institutions do appear to reduce levels of gun homicide. This include policing and criminal justice systems, systems of political accountability, welfare safety nets, comprehensive education provision and cultures of trust and confidence. That apply to crime rate, drug use, and all the other factors of deaths you listed in comparison to the U.S. They also seem to be more secular whereas the U.S. grasps at constant pleas to prayer & religious fervor. It's probably why these countries like Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, etc. all seem to consistently score higher on quality of life, happiness, safety.....at least in comparison to the U.S.

@@larryross1819 You have all your statistics, but you need to look in your heart too. Sure, many other things kill people. But the death of a child or innocent person for no reason other than a nutjob with a gun is senseless and horrific. The fear of millions of students and parents across the country adds up to many living in terror. The lives are just one cost of gun violence. Also, you may not have noticed, but gun violence and mass shootings are increasing at an alarming rate. How much worse should we let it get before your statistics are high enough to warrant doing something about it? How many of those death need to add up before we ask for responsible gun purchasing, ownership, and storage? Which one of those parents will you look in the eye and say that their child's death was just an insignificant incident?

Dr. Guerrero is rightly angry with the decades of inaction by politicians by their not enacting sensible gun laws. He has seen the deaths & injuries first hand & so have thousands of first responders including myself. I'm now retired but I saw too many gun deaths including at a high school shooting that claimed 2 students & a young female teacher. A 16 year old students brain fragments on the ceiling, a dead boy in his pool of blood in the hallway, a mortally wounded teacher who I assisted in her classroom but she died an hour later + several other wounded students in her classroom. Over the decades USA has had hundreds of shootings at schools that have killed hundreds & wounded thousands. Dozens of politicians have refused to vote for sensible gun laws EG's: 1) ban the sale to the public of military-style rifles & high capacity bullet magazines 2) background checks on everyone buying a gun & you don't get the gun until the checks are completed & approved 3) a sensible 'red flag' law. Canada has such laws & it always averages under 300 homicides a year committed with guns (some years recently it's had under 200) while USA averages over 15,000 homicides a year committed with guns.

You forget one important point. People who want to kill, and those who do mass murder want to kill. Will do so with or without a gun. They will use whatever they can. The two kids who did the Boston Marathon bombing made a bomb because they couldn’t get a gun. Bomb are easier to make then getting a gun. Diesel fuel, fertilizer, nails and screws. That’s all. You want to stop mass murder? Give everyone who needs it free mental health care. Only good free mental health care will stop mass murder. Nothing else will. Remember Caine killed Able with a rock. What next then? Ban on rocks, Knives, etc? Magazine bans don’t work, they just use multiple guns, or train themselves to change a mag out in less then 1 second. It’s impossible to enforce background checks on private sales, red flag laws would be fine if they actually followed due process. Canada May have lower gun homicides, but the number of total homicides did not go down. Now more are killed by beatings, and knives and other weapons. Look at total murder rates not just those of guns. Remember those who want to kill will do so with or without guns. They will even use a rock

In Switzerland, men aged 18-34 who are “fit for service” are all trained and conscripted into the Swiss military, and women who are of age can also choose to enlist. Military personnel are provided with a Swiss Army gun and trained to use it, and the weapon becomes theirs for the duration of their service. They undergo mandatory training when they are 18 and then considered to be part of the Swiss militia until they reach the age of 35, with shorter periods of mandatory training in between to freshen their minds on tactics and safety. Heart breaking to see him testify. Must have taken a lot of strength even as a doctor to endure what he went thru. But knowing the deaf and dumb politicians that heard him, I do not know if they will even consider any change. Even before the bipartisan committee started to find solutions, they laid conditions of what is "off the table". Have they really lost their conscience? Have they become so heart empty? Many of them have kids and grand kids aged the same as the 19 that lost lives. Are they not even thinking about them when they try to offer useless solutions and point fingers at something ludicrous?

This hurts my heart so bad. I lost my son to violence in the war in Iraq. He kept sending me letters and pictures of the kids he wanted to send to me so they would be safe. He served 2 deployments, 3 years in country. 2 of the 5 kids who the Army refused to let me care for died with my son. I wish I could afford to travel to Uvalde and help the families get through this senseless violence. My hometown is hurting up here in Buffalo and this has to stop. Too many people are going through life wondering what their child would be doing on any particular day because it never goes away. It stays with you forever, the wondering what Mark your child would have made on the world if they had lived long enough to live their dreams. I send my love to Uvalde and wish I could take this away like waking up from a bad dream but the dream never ends.

Heart-wrenching. Such painful details need to be heard by Conservatives who flat-out refuse to even consider some common sense gun laws. No 18 year old should be able to purchase such a devastating weapon. This has to change. Texas and other states must raise the purchase age, enact red-flag laws, longer waiting periods, close the gun show loop holes. Enough of the fucking excuse!

Now they are saying it's because of kids in a single non father home. Bull crap . I have 4 all 40 and older not a one ever in jail or trouble I was a single mom for years and years and worked 2 jobs because I never once even received a single penny for child support,. SO that's crap. The doing these shootings due to mental illness or just plain ass bad kids. My mother raised 7 of us 5 boys 2 girls we all turned out good in fact 2 of my brothers 20 years army green berets both plus they did 2 tours in vietnam. Both died from agent orange. Tell you the truth this crap really started heavy after all the pandemic shots. Maybe that's a problem. I said that along time ago. This stuff they are shooting in us will come back to haunt us.

I mean that's just your personal experience but statistics prove that single parent children do tend to have issues. Im not saying that's why this kid this but that is a real thing. Having a mental issue can also stem from something like that but can also stem from a number of diffrent things. Not saying I don't agree with you but it wouldn't shock me if his upbringing is a reason for his mental illness
