The probable causes may include:
- Infection
-Multiple Injection Sites for Local Anesthetics
- Trauma during surgery
- Extent of Surgery
- Infection and inflammation of surrounding bone
-Muscle Spasm or injury
The causes are many but the treatment is mostly managed by medicines , physiotherapy exercises and rest.

Hi Dr. Rudra, thank you for all of this information. Your video out of all the videos I found was the one I was looking for. I am on day 9 and my wisdom teeth feel better, however, I cannot bite down! I have not been able to chew my food for 9 days and it has been so painful. My jaw isn’t moving either. I am going to the dentist today to check on it. Will this go away naturally? What’s the longest it can take? Should I see a jaw soecialost? This is so frustrating and I feel I am losing my nutrients

Hi , it should get better and more comfortable within the next 5-7 days , just be patient and follow all the instructions as per your dentist and you will be alright in no time !

Did yours go away naturally or did you consistently put heating packs on your face and/or do jaw stretches?

I am crying in pain. Today it marks the 14th day of my impacted wisdom tooth extraction. I have a lot of head ache and unable to open my mouth more than 1 finger width. My surgeon just asked me to do some exercises. I am extremely worried as i also suffer from fibromyalgia. I am scared where everything is inter linked. Tmj,fibromyalgia and now Trismus. M extremely low and in too much pain. I feel like dying 😢

I recently had all of my wisodom teeth taken out at the same time. I'm amazed at how fast my recovery was. I had the worst pain I ever experienced for about 4 days, but pain meds helped that a lot. I took my antibiotics pescribed, and also a prescription mouth was as per instructions. I was lucky enough to have a great surgeon, and to get general anesthesia for my precedure. The post bleeding lasted for 3 hours, which is something all patients should be prepped for presurgery, which I was. Just the incredible pain I had for for the first 3 to 4 days was incredible. For the first night, I was precribed a pretty powerful narcotic prescription painkiller, and that barely took the pain away. Anyways, I encourage all people to get those impacted wisdoms out if the doctor makes the determination. I caused a lot of issues in my mouth by not getting them out sooner, and luckily it's not anything that can't be fixed. But I would have saved a lot of money and suffering if I had gotten them out in my teen years and not waited until now in my early 20s. Take care of yourself people, and be healthy!

Thank you for this video. This is my second time having impacted wisdom tooth removed and every time I have had horrible trismis. I am 7days post op and ritually doing as doctor suggested, but I am too scared to go to the dentist to have my stitch removed. My first time, my dentist used a jaw opener kind of thing which was the most horrible experience of my life.

My empathy towards your discomfort , i must say you have shown great courage to get the wisdom tooth extracted for the second time. It's not necessary that you will get the similar discomfort as previous episode . I for one got two of my wisdom teeth extracted and the first one was a horrible experience as the tooth was sleeping deep in bone so my post op swelling was huge. The second one seemed like a breeze knowing if I could handle the discomfort of the first one so I could take on anything!

Mu Dentist lied and gaslit me and never told me anything. Said i must be holding it closed. And to try and move it more even though its painful. It wouldn't move any wider i went back to him two times. It was stuck for five months. I was about to sue him when it finally opened a little. It was traumatizing. I had to google this info myself. Hello Doctor, I got my wisdom tooth removed on 19 August 2024, got 3 stitches, 2 injections of anaesthesia and it took 60 minutes to get the tooth out by the doctor. My doctor was very rude, so impatient on my condition. However I developed an infection after two days of my surgery and cried like a maniac as I have never been through this trauma before. Doctor has said that my stitches will be out in next two days and I’m not able to open my mouth at all.. I’m very scared. Will the doctor forcefully going to open my mouth because I’m still on liquids and can’t even open my mouth for 1cm.. please help me

I have Trismus, the strange thing is that it happened 10 days after the surgery. I have about 1.5cm opening range, so that makes eating very difficult. My dentist is referring me to a orofacial physiotherapist, I'm not sure if he/she will be able to help me with this issue however. I'm struggling with this for a week now and it's not really improving so far.

I’m on my post 3 weeks after getting my lower right wisdom tooth removed. It took my dentist 40 minutes to remove the tooth as it was slanted rather than straight. I got dissolvable stitches which dissolved 5 days ago. I can open up to 2 fingers but the right side is still tender. I’ve been doing mouth stretches and it hurts so much. Will I ever be normal again 😢😢😢

Yes you will ,take the prescribed medications , maintain good hygiene , if possible do some hot foamentation and keep exercising

Left Third molar mandibular 3rd molar (38 )Dr . I got stiches and yes there was swelling before ,a huge one den somehow the swelling reduced after the cold treatment after extraction...den I felt like I can't open my mouth , now the edema has hardened just near the ramus and the angel of the mandible, and now for no reason I m having pain in the ramus of the mandible. My dentist advised me to take Tab Lyzer for 3 days, today is the 2nd day, but i m still feeling the trismus real bad and I can't speak for long as my muscles near the ramus starts hurting and also the lateral side of the frontal bone of the skull I can feel some reffer pain on the same side as the tooth (38) was extracted. What test should I do, my edema is hardening like a rock

I feel SOOO much better after watch8ng this. I'm on week 3 post op and still have severe trismus. Surgeon states it's from spasms and clenching but it feels like no matter what I do it'll never go away.

Doctor, I am suffering with tmj issue, after a wide opening for dental cleAning there was a duscomfort in closing my mouth, because of these, my teeth cleaning are done by little bit opening of my mouth( advises by the dentist). My wisdom tooth is infected, is it possible to me, to do this surgery, because opening my mouth for a long time, make sone pains and it may lock my jaw,... After the removal, my mouth opening may become more poor than the previous.....

I’m glad it goes away…. But this is the worst pain I have ever felt. Being restricted to even put a popsicle in my mouth sucks. I can’t even swallow due to how sore my throat is ;(

@@TammyVee this is my 7th day and I couldn’t take my antibiotics so I asked if I could get penicillin in a liquid form. It helped a lot! As for the pain meds, I only took Advil because the ibuprofen pills were a bit bigger to swallow with the soreness and my mouth being so swollen (they’re basically the same thing). I had to crush the Advil into yogurt tho (first 2 days then I stopped taking it). Even then, I felt the pain for the next two days. My pain tolerance is pretty high so I just held through with it. I’m not swollen anymore, BUT the bottom of my jaw, under my ear near my throat, is still bruised. I’m still unable to open my mouth as wide as I did before (barley three finger spaces vertically). I’ve been doing jaw exercises to help and it’s been getting better little by little! Push through, you got this. :)

@@bakzjdnkd7543 SO SO SO MUCH BETTER! I found a jaw exercise that truly helped me a lot! You basically align the top and bottom of your teeth (so you don’t have an under or overbite), open your mouth as wide as you can (even if it’s just a cm), hold it for 5-10 seconds, slowly close it, and repeat 5 times daily. Once I was able to open wide enough and felt comfortable, I slowly moved my jaw side to side while having it a little open. Tbh, I wasn’t able to brush my teeth thoroughly the first 4/5 days 😭 But I promise it gets better! I unfortunately had all four wisdom teeth out so it was just brutal for me. The doc spent a good 20 min on each molar for the bottoms because they were really impacted

I found this amazing dentist who has a playlist on several exercises for TMJ (lock jaw, trismus, whatever you wanna call it). I hope this helps someone. I couldn’t really do any of the massages near the surgical area because of the bruising and swelling, but I’ve done several variations of the 6x6. My tooth #32 was partially impacted bone and hence was removed by Oral surgeon, She had to stitch it afterwards. Now it's been 1 week, but I am unable to open my full mouth. It pains while trying to talk / eat something. Pain killers are prescribed and taking it regularly, but not sure when will I be able to open full mouth

Hi , it's absolutely normal to feel this way in the first week following surgery , you can contact your oral surgeon to do exercises for mouth opening after her permission , it takes a good 2-3 weeks to be able to open the mouth after stitches are removed . The experience may be harrowing but it's temporary. Keep continuing the prescribed medicines as per your doctor

A good question they should and ideally would first find the cause of the swelling , probably due to infection and inflammation , then after a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications your swelling would go done and under local anesthesia you won't feel pain and can open the mouth during surgery so that they can remove your wisdom tooth

So usually till about a week you need to eat semi solid mashed food like oats and all , in your case you may have to visit your dentist again if your jaw seems blocked after one week

Hello Doctor! Thank you for this video. It’s very difficult to stay calm when experiencing lock jaw. I had my wisdom teeth removed Thursday afternoon and after being awake for a while on Friday and Saturday, the lock jaw went away. So I get it during the night. Today (Sunday) it’s gotten worse. I can only fit two fingers in my mouth. (I was able to open my mouth wide enough TWICE after a nap but then it locked up again… strange?) I’m shocked that it has not gotten better, but worse. I’m still very swollen too. My dentist took my two upper wisdom teeth out without using a tool to cut the bone although they were tucked inside and not broken through. He says the bone is soft enough to stretch. (?) So A LOT of pressure/force was felt during the short operation even with the local anesthesia. Can this cause the trauma to cause lock jaw?

First off, your whole vibe is wonderful I might fly to see you my next needed surgery. Haha. I am 7 days into my first bout of Trismus. I am very grumpy. I am Prednisone, Amoxicillin and Cyclobenzaprine. Aside from taking those what can I do exercise wise that will help loosen the muscle without straining it and how often should I heat and cool it?

Hi , sorry for the late reply , i hope you are alright now , make sure you are not trying to open your mouth to aggressively. You can use hot and cold packs intermittently 10 mins apart for 10 min each

How about doc ...after 5days from the day the doctor remove my upper tooth..then I'm trying to touch the gums of which side my tooth removed I feel some sharp...then I ask to the doctor and she told me it is normal...it is the bone...? Now I'm just asking u doc it is possible that the sharp I touch is bone not the remaining tooth

Good day, I have a question for you. On December 22nd I went to my local dentist for a cap replacement on my bottom molar (right side). I received a local anesthesia for the procedure. A day after the right side of my jaw was extremely sore, and I started experiencing a lot of pain. Almost three weeks after the procedure I am unable to fully open my mouth. Do you know what can be the cause of this? I went to the ER twice. The last time being yesterday (06Jan). My last trip to the ER at University of Washington Medical Center, they did a non-contrast CT maxillofacial scan. They did find any broken bones, no swelling etc.

Thank you doctor for this information. Its been 21 days since i got my lower right wisdom tooth extracted . It was attached to the jaw bone and was interlinked with nerve. Since day one im not able to open my mouth beyond 1 finger. I Am really afraid as im undergoing invisible Aligner treatment. 2 more years to go. My dentist says i should get upper wisdom tooth extracted as well. Otherwise they are likely to move down and cause more harm. Im not able to brush or clean my tongue. I dont want to develop cavities. While extraction i lost 1inch of jaw bone attached to the teeth. I still have a hard lump on my cheek . Thankfully no discolouration. Will that be a problem for quick healing from trismus? I had jaw clicking before while i opened my jaw wide.

Hello doctor, thank you so much for your informative video. I got one of my wisdom teeth removed 12 days ago. It was very impacted and infected. The dentist froze my mouth, took out my tooth and scraped the infection out of the socket and stitched me back up. I've completed my corticosteroid and antibiotic treatment. I am suffering from trismus. It's hard to eat. I've also noticed that my jaw feels hard to the touch comparing to the other side. I've been doing jaw exercises and warm compresses daily, but haven't seen any improvement. I have contacted my dentist and waiting for a call back. Is this normal? I would appreciate any help. I empathize with your discomfort , it should get better in a few days .The treatment and home care regimen is on point , if it still doesn't open up after 15-25 days then we might have to sort to other solutions , don't worry it should get better , keep on exercising

This makes a lot of sense. I had all 4 pulled and only one side of my jaw is experiencing the trismus. It is the same side that had the tooth somewhat embedded with the bone which was what you were talking about. Not to mention my appointment was 1hr and 30 minutes so my jaw was extremely tired from being open. Hopefully it recovers soon, I’m very tired and frustrated being unable to eat

@@houseofbows I’m good now, there’s some sensitivity in the general area of the bone I talked about ^ BUT I can fully open my mouth again and eat normally. I just let it heal with the occasional self massages

@@11marcian hey! Yeah I’m totally good now, I just occasionally massaged the area and let it heal. I tried chewing on the side that hurt regardless to help exercise the area. And my holes are alllllmost closed after 1 1/2 months

Got upper left side wisdom tooth removed few months ago and it took 5 minutes for the dentist to remove the broken and cavities tooth. Single injection, followed all post removal instructions. Sometimes the jaw lock thing happens post dinner and goes away on its own after few minutes. I have a theory that chewing hard food from left side is causing movement issue as tooth is missing. What do you think sir?

@@theoralhealthchannel Thank you for replying. Not that frequent and only post dinner so I think its because of roti chewing. My habit is to take big bites not small bits. I have reduced chewing from left side and it doesn't happen so far.

My empathy for your discomfort , I can imagine how harrowing the experience can be. The mouth opening can take upto four weeks. Thanks Dr. Rudra for the video. I had a painful and curious case which took 3hrs by the dentist to drill and break the wisdom tooth in pieces also he had to give me 5 LA injections at the site as I was still feeling pain. After 1 week of extraction swelling was gone but still now after 10 days I have jaw stiffness and my dentist gave me Max spaz forte 1 tablet every night for 10 days but after taking for 3 days the lower jaw bone pain has lowered but still the jaw is locked. He told me to do warm saline rinses and that tablet will cause my jaw open slowly but I am not seeing signs which is making me worry. :(

My empathy towards your discomfort.I would firstly suggest you visit the treating dentist and seek a solution. Otherwise start doing isometric exercise , take muscle relaxants as per doctors advise and you can take neurobion supplements for the nerve sensation which could back soon

In invasive surgery, clean socket with currette and wash it with betadine and saline mixture solution, precribe Hexidine, inj dexamethasone, exercises, curretee or probing the area to relief pressure of exudate edema causing bleeding is good, good muscle relaxant with antibiotics and analgesic

Please dr answer my question ⁉️ I got trismus 24 hrs after wisdom tooth extraction in the first day i was able to open it normally but after that i start to develop the trismus no other symptoms of pain or inflammation so, i called my dentist he said it's ok this is because the analgesic and he advice me to take muscle relaxant + Neurobion ,, please 🥺 dr tell is it ok , are these drugs will help me , i wanna return back to my normal status . I realllllly need your answer you realllly got my full trust.

Wow mashallah , you explained the issue ver very well ,. I’m 8 days post op , the pain and swelling is ok but i can only open 40% of my mouth , if i try to push more the pain becomes horribly unbearable , i’ll wait 2 weeks or little more i hope it goes away eventually by itself although im still using anti inflammatory and antiseptic mouthwash . I extracted my third moral in the left bottom side of my mouth and my mouth was locked since then. It’s day 7 and the trismus doesn’t go away specially when I wake up in the morning the tension is stronger, but I can barely fit 1 finger in my mouth. What can I do I am very terrified and irritated.

Visit the treating doctor and ask them to give you pain killers/muscle relaxants and do exercises it will open gradually don't worry

Thank you doctor, I am very grateful for your reply and I appreciate it so much. I do have another question please, You said in the video that your trismus went away in 12 days? Was it gradually? I mean did your mouth start opening day by day more and more or were you suddenly able to open it? Was it going gradually day by day but one day which was the 12th day it was more open like at max with greater improvement in only one day or how did it go? By the way I went to the doctor and made x ray and cbct scan and the doctor said she can’t see any big damage. I am even doing physical therapy now by microwave heating but still having limited mouth opening. Please help me

thanks for easing my mind it’ll get better and making this video you’re more informative than my dentist🙏🏼 day 4 and i am sooo swollen i even went back to the dentist to make sure it wasn’t something serious, doesn’t look infected and nothing pusses or oozes so just rock hard swollen and yellow bruising, like golf ball hard swelling 😖 i could only open a few ml the first day couldn’t start my pain meds and antibiotics until day 2 at night because of it! but day 4 now i can maybe almost an inch , i pray it gets better so i can eat more with these antibiotics 😫 surgery took 45 mins for 2 so maybe that’s why. taking it 1 day at a time 💙 (it doesn’t even really hurt anymore just stiff)

I had my wisdom tooth removed 9 days ago , first 3 days were normal then after that I realised I wasn’t able to open my mouth fully (hardly 2.5 fingers) . It’s been 6 days still mouth isn’t opening. Yes it will definitely go away , it takes about a minimum of 15-20 days , and the stitches if placed wont let you open your mouth properly ,i would suggest wait for the stitches to be removed and then you can start with the exercises

I think I got this from a very rough and aggressive endodontist, He so violently stabbed me with the shots that my cheek is swollen and bruised! From having 2 root canals on back teeth. The swelling, bruising, and inability to move my mouth very much has lasted much longer than the pain in the teeth. Note: I've had dental work done for over 40 years and this has NEVER happened to me before, not even when I had my wisdom teeth out.

Thanks for this informative video! It's the fifth day after my tooth removal and I can only open my mouth slightly. I'm not able to wash my teeth properly - how can I maitain hygiene? I try to kind of rinse with water but I'm afraid it is not enough. Second thing is that i can't feel half of my tounge. This is very disturbing to me...:(

Hy Dr Thanks for this good video. I also undergo under and upper wisdom teeth extraction from left side surgery seven days ago. After surgery l can’t open my mouth even up to one finger. My Dr said when you would be able to open wider then your stitches would be open l even loss some part of jaw bone because of tooth was flatter. I’m in stress what to do Trying to do exercise. And giving hot compresses but not helping. Guide me what to do? I also have tingling sensation and burning feeling around the chin cheek and on tongue

Hi doc, I just have question regarding the extraction, I cannot open my mouth wide for a long time because it might get locked, now they need to extract my tooth because its already infected, now they advised me to have general anesthesia during the surgery. Is it really okay? Will it be fine? Is it the best solution in order to extract my tooth?

Yes that's actually a good question , so general anesthesia can be indicated for tooth surgery if there are certain conditions that suit it . Yes it is alright if your dentist has recommended it.As a patient you can ask the rationale for the same..

When I was inside the operating room I thought I am going to see my dentist first before sleeping but I don’t know what happen next haha the anesthesiologist came to me and inject something, then the next thing that happened was there were 2 nurses woke me up and they said “done removed already”.

you can take skeletal muscle relaxants after consulting with your treating dentist and get it checked out , it could be due to local anesthetic injection site into the muscle or trauma following surgery
