I now go for walks early in the morning and I can’t wait to listen to talks like these on my phone while I walk. I’ve listened to this one a few times and I’m still not bored. I look forward to getting up now. I’ve being doing keto for some time now now. It’s helped me lose weight, get rid of anxiety and depression, improve mental clarity, focus and concentration, memory, arthritis and nerve pain. I’m not obsessed with food anymore. So many benefits. It’s just a shame I can’t get my family to listen or believe me when I try to tell them about what I’ve learnt over the years with low carb/keto eating.

I think many people love their carb cravings so much they do not believe they can live better and enjoy not eating them. What no potatoes, ice cream, soda, etc ?? What they don't realize is they will not WANT to eat those things anymore that are killing them.

I am a graduate student in human physiology, nutrition, and epidemiology and I got to say, this guy knows exactly what he is talking about. Sadly, what he knows is not taught (in fact, I go to a Uni that specializes in nutrition - kind of well-known in the EU) and we have major greenwashing here because it aligns with big agriculture. Most of my colleagues follow a vegan diet, and they think that we should eat as little salt as possible and no saturated fat. They also believe that calories are more important than macronutrients, and to be honest... both calories AND macros matter equally, and within the context of each other (not in isolation). I don't mind if you choose a vegan diet because you think it's right for you, or for moral obligations. But it is not ideal for all patient populations (like, for example, people like myself who have a lifelong history and family history of hormonal obesity). Or for my mother, who has T2DM. However, most dietitians back in Canada recommend she eats 25 g of carbohydrates per snack/ meal. T2DM is essentially carbohydrate intoxication... You can't empty a pool by putting more water in it. You can't reverse T2DM or ameliorate it with a high carb diet (although, if it is deficient in protein and fat and calories... it might work in the short term but you would be hungry, tired, and miserable). Unfortunately, most of the cutting-edge nutrition facts that I've learned I've learned through independent research. Low-salt stimulates appetite and decreases satiety (and may even decrease energy expenditure, among MANY other deleterious effects), and saturated fat is an integral, structural component in each of our cells (why do you think most dietary guidelines tell you to eat approx 7% of your fat from SFA?) Yet we shouldn't eat it because it will give us cardiovascular disease? (This has been debunked, many, many times. Dietary cholesterol is ALSO good for you.)

I have a question no one has asked. I'm taking extra virgin olive oil for it's fat content and get about 500 calories daily from that but it's mainly mono unsaturated fats. How does this compare to coconut oil which is like 90% saturated fat and barely any unsaturated fat. Would someone following a ketogenic diet benefit from taking coconut oil as apposed to olive oil for less inflammation?

On 'lite' salt - we have not been able to find potasium chloride or a blend of sodium chloride with potassium chloride that did not have added chemicals. Instead, bone broth is a good source of minerals, and is ridiculously easy to make. This is what used to be called simply broth, or clear soup. A splash of organic apple cider vinegar in a slow cooker with the bones and scraps from whatever meat you have available helps the minerals to be released from the bones. Simmering the broth for 2-3 days also helps. In the not long ago past, everyone used to keep a pot of broth simmering over the fire, woodstove, or on the back burner. Adding a good measure of unprocessed salt (Himalayan,Redmonds, etc) enhances the flavor, and also helps provide the salt we need. Other herbs can be added to taste. Of course, 100% grassfed beef or lamb or other herbivore, or pastured poultry or pork that have been raised without chemicals or chemically contaminated feed is ideal.
@justlookattheflowers4239

Yeah there has actually been a study where they have found very low mineral content in bone broth, you have to add veggies to the broth to get the minerals.

I wish I could ask Dr. Phinney about end of life nutrition, not in a vain attempt to keep the person from dying but to remove the negative impacts of misguided nutrition. My 92 year old father is dying from heart and renal failure and has Parkinson’s. He is fully bedridden and needs total care. He is suffering from anxiety, rumination, and worry. The diet he is being fed consists mainly of Ensure (sugar and corn oil) and fruit. I can’t help but wonder if some of his suffering would be reduced by a ketogenic diet - smoothies with avocados, olive oil, whey protein instead of all this fructose and seed oil. Is end of life nutrition studies? I get that, on the surface, such a speciality may seem like a waste. The dying will die, as will we all. The goal would be to find if making dietary changes eases the dying experience for the patient, particularly patients like my dad.

Add in testing Vitamin D. •25(OH)D •iPTH •Serum calcium (This rules out parathyroid issues before supplementing) 1000 IU D3 is only equivalent to 25 mcg. Many people need up to 10x that amount to optimize their Vitamin D. Cofactors to daily D3 are: 200 mcg Vitamin k2 400-600 of Magnesium (not oxide form/poor absorption) Take with meal containing healthy fat as D3 (at breakfast or lunch with half the magnesium) and Take K2 (at supper with meal containing healthy fat) along with other half of magnesium. D3 and K2 are fat soluble, needing fat in diet to absorb. Optimal 25(OH)D 80 ng/dL 200 nmol/L Vitamin D protocol aids in !immune balance and improves insulin sensitivity along with the diet like described in this video. Di your own research.

With respect to the drop off in ketones for long term ketogenic nutrition in TD2 I see this in myself. I was pre DB2 (reversed). My fasting glucose has elevated in morning from prior context of about 75-90 mg/dL to often now 101-106 mg/dL with decent ketone generation (.7-1.1 mmol/L). I interpret this phenomena as more efficient use of ketones and also a reset of basil glucose levels to higher - a new normal. I am also higher levels of protein since I do heavy gym workouts and focusing on LBM simultaneous with body fat loss.

My doctor recommends I take a teaspoon a day of mineral salt (Celtic or RealSalt), because my adrenal throws out my salt and my minerals. I have been diligent about this, and still, my last CMP showed I was still low on both sodium and chloride. So I take it two times a day now. And I never have cravings for it. I learned I liked nutritional yeast broth, and add bone broth, plus grass fed butter and real salt. I learned this the first time I was out of the hospital for vomiting (ulcer) and was struggling to get potassium back to help my leg cramps. But definitely high fat. I think the body feels the weight loss, adaptations are happening. Like you said the gene adaptations or gene expressions. Chemo may causes you to loose hair. There are reports of fasting or low carb people keep all of their hair. No loss. I also get weak when i'm nutrient deficient. One example for me is dizziness or weakness is helped or totally goes away by eating one bunch of kale. or taking a good multivitamin. is it the vitamins/minerals or the body's reaction to digestion stimulation. Mental effects are mixed in this for me. I was food addicted, i mean nutrient deficient and insulin resistant. Which is it. That is a good debate.

Yes, potassium chloride is somewhat bitter. If you think that's bad, try magnesium chloride! What I do is create a standard mix of these three salts that I use for cooking. As long as there is sufficient sodium in the mix, the taste of these salts is fine _in food_ (though it is still pretty bad if you taste it by itself), and it makes it easy to get enough of each of these minerals. To do this, just decide how much of each mineral (Na+, K+, Mg2+) you want, and then _divide_ that amount by the mass percentage of each element within the compound you are using. Here's some data: Potassium Chloride (KCl): 52.4% K Sodium Chloride (NaCl): 39.3% Na Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2*6H2O): 12.0% Mg So for example, if you want 500 mg of Sodium, the amount of NaCl needed is: 500 mg / 0.393 = 1272 mg NaCl Using these formulas in a spreadsheet, it is easy to put together whatever salt mix you want.

Which means that we need double the amount of salt mentioned to meet our sodium needs. On the Low Carb Down Under, there are other talks that refer to an extensive study published about 3 years ago which measured salt intake and found that death by all causes was LOWEST in people consuming DOUBLE the amount of salt/sodium that the US government recommends. If you have not seen it, you may want to look for it. It was a real eye-opener. Commercial table salt has had the other trace minerals removed, and chemicals added to help prevent the processed salt from caking together in humid weather, so that 'when it rains, it pours'. commercial salt has also been super-heated, which changes it. For those reasons, and for superior flavor, many people are choosing unprocessed salts like Himalayan or Redmond Natural Trace Mineral salt from the USA. More info on processed salt:

Suggest Get baseline blood tests first. Seek out a Keto doctor. Keto for weight loss - Usually YES. Will it improve congestive heart failure- Not sure.( other clinicians please comment) Inflammation will reduce on Keto so will probably have better mobility? My experience very important to measure Blood ketones so you are not guessing about whether you are in Ketosis . Hope these comments help. Dr John Stewart BVSc

Yes. Get a doctor who understands this diet. Pre-test levels first. Get a copy of all those test results including reference ranges The test should be related to the meds she is taking. Start gradually, one meal at a time. Part of diet is habit, but it can affect digestion. Some people who are sicker can get constipated if they are already prone to this, or meds which worsen this.(This ties in to quality of life, people feel sickly when digestion isn’t balanced) Journal diet before, and journal as each change is made to diet) At home, you can learn to monitor some things daily, or more. Example: Blood pressure (done correctly) Blood sugar (Contour Next) Blood Ox metre on finger Asthma peak flow metre Weight (DEXA scan is even more accurate) Doctor should test to be aware if certain meds are no longer needed or need to be reduced. That’s why doctor should be involved. The patient’s weight affects dosage too, as many drugs the dosages are calculated based on patient’s weight. If weight loss occurs, dosage may need lowering. Research for yourself in detail, drug name, purpose of drug, all side effects, interactions, if one needs to wean off that particular drug gradually. Afterwards, at appointment, doctor why they choose that drug, and why they believe it is best. Some drugs are used off-label. (Example of a drug used off-label is Viagra) Note that if someone is used to eating a high carb diet, they will need to transition. Make sure you learn it very well yourself first, especially about the electrolytes, salt, potassium requirements. Your mom may also be resistant. Since the 1970s, previous doctors would tell patients to eat low fat, high carb, and people believed them, and may find eating the opposite internally difficult. You need to be very patient and kind with that issue. Ask mom’s permission allowing you to help. Include her in the discussion. Keep it simple at first. If she agrees, you may get better compliance in the long run. If you don’t eat this way, it would be better if you eat this way too. Mom will trust you more. Make it a family team effort.

I thought alcohol is prioritized in your liver to be broken down, above glucose and fats, which would temporarily stop ketone production, kicking you out of ketosis. Keotsis could then resume once the alcohol had been processed into fat.
@guibox3

I think that it doesn't KICK you out of ketosis (the right kinds of liquors) but that it basically puts it on hold until the liver has finished metabolizing the alcohol. So rather than your body having to get you back into ketosis, it just picks up where you left off.

re the salt/potassium excretion studies....i understand that increased excretion is correlated with reduced mortality. Can't this also be interpreted as reducing levels of both in the body (by excretion) is correlated with reduced mortality? Just wondering...i'm not a scientist.
@tonyrabone4668
@tonyrabone4668 5 лет назад
I think it has to be assumed that the net amount of those within the body may change but is not changing at such a dramatic rate for a sustained period of time, but that the increased excretion rate sustained over a longer period relates to increased intake. Just think of the cumulative affect on net body levels over many days if your hypothesis were true; it would be substantial. Not a scientist either.

My wife has rheumatoid arthritis and has been on the carnivore diet for a week. There are not ketones showing up on the Ketostix. Type 1 diabetic and 20g of carbs and 70g of protein keto diet here. I sometimes run up to 4.0-5.0mmol/L of ketones, but always with a decent blood glucose of between 3.5-5.5mmol/L. I feel fine when ketones go high like that, always hydrated and I have sodium in the form of salt with my water, and insulin always at hand. Dr Bernstein says high ketones do not matter if blood glucose is at the optimum range. Should I still be concerned?
@SteveHonakerII
@SteveHonakerII 5 лет назад
Not a doctor. Ketoacidosis is where your blood literally turns acidic to the point where it causes problems with the whole system. Blood glucose levels at that point would be irrelevant. In a healthy person with functioning insulin system you couldn't reach ketoacidosis while glucose is normal, because of the effect of the insulin inhibiting glucagon in the process of maintaining blood sugar. In a Type 1 diabetic you have little to no internal insulin production so you can potentially have ketoacidosis with normal glucose depending on diet.
@ardnfast
@ardnfast 5 лет назад
No, not unless you have uncontrolled blood sugars/stop taking insulin. Great job on running normal blood sugars by the way!
@YouNolf
@YouNolf 5 лет назад
Hi, no, as long as you put insulin inside you, you should be fine and well, as it will maintain BG low. Ketoacidosis can occur without a keto diet if you forget insulin, as the body secretes glucose from muscles (and if you're eating it, receives it from food) and ketones from bodyfat, putting all these into circulation without control and dangerously lowering the blood pH because there's no insulin signaling glucagon to stop and nutrients cannot enter cells. So, it's basically an uncontrolled, unbalanced catabolic state that is entirely caused by the lack of the regulating hormone insulin. You can actually avoid "normal" diabetic complications (which aren't normal at all) later in the years if you adopt a keto diet, as they are mainly caused by continuous glycation damage that occurs every time you get your BG higher than normal (higher than 90-100mg/l), and with a low carb diet you greatly mitigate BG swings.

From one well managed type1 to another (my last A1c was 4.9%). Type1 (as we do it) is an intense management burden. You have to prioritize your goals. Being in ketosis or ketogeninc is so far down my list it isn't funny. Now, I don't know you, if you have weight issues or have experienced muscle wasting but 70 grams of protein seems like a very low target to me. I set mine at 1.5 grams per Kg of ideal lean weight which for me is 86Kg for a target of 130gms Protein. Since I did experience severe wasting before my diagnosis, I'm playing catch up. Many keto enthusiasts are protein adverse and we type1's should be generous in that regard depending on individual situation. Don't lump protein in as a "Percentage Macro-nutrient". It isn't there for energy like carbs and fat are. And don't worry about gluconeogenesis yes, protein will raise your blood sugar and we plan for that, that is what bolus injections are for. Finally, Bood glucose management first, last and always. If you manage that, ketoacidosis from diet is not an issue. You may run into diabetologists and endos talking about euglycemic ketoacidosis or ketoacidosis with "normal" blood sugar. Dig into it more deeply and you will find they have the "standard diet" and typical standards of care blinders on where they consider a blood sugar below 200 Mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) and 60% carbs "normal"....for a type 1. Definitely not normal for us. When you follow the Bernstein plan you really have to take expert guidance with great caution as they the are stuck in the high carb / high blood sugar paradigm. They accidentally kill us all the time.
@paulpladin9590
@paulpladin9590 4 года назад
@@SteveHonakerII This is not good advice. A well managed type1 will not get ketoacidosis from diet any more than a normal person will. There are extreme risks of this but not from a well formulated VLCHF diet. You can find in the literature where DKA with "Normal" blood sugars is cited but these use the ADA definition of "Normal" in the context of a high carb diet. If you read the papers, they define "Normal" as being below 200mg/dl or 11.1 mmol/l. This is wildly abnormal blood sugar.

Yes. What we call salt is NaCl, half and half sodium and chloride. Salts that have not been processed will also contain trace and micro-trace minerals, like the pink Himalayan salt, or Redmond natural trace mineral salt from Utah which are also beneficial. Processed table salt has no trace minerals left, has been super heated which alters it, and has had harmful chemicals added. It also tastes horrible compared to unprocessed salts. Only a small percentage of the population has to be concerned about salt intake. The rest of us, so long a we drink enough water, don't have to worry about it.
