Susan David, Ph.D. (award-winning Harvard Medical School psychologist) breaks down emotional agility, explaining how navigating our emotions can impact every area of our lives, why emotional labor can lead to burnout, the importance of not allowing emotions to guide us, and ways to prevent internalizing stereotypes about ourselves. She reveals the dangers of toxic positivity, how our negative emotions can disconnect us from our true selves, why the power of choice equates to growth and freedom, and the four most common "hooks" that prevent us from taking action. Dr. David provides strategies to change up your routine in a positive way, ways to align with your core values, and how to have your own back through self-compassion. She also shares her own personal grief journey and battle with disordered eating that led her to her life’s work.

'Our emotions are sign posts of things we care about and need to engage with.' Very well stated about how we need to work with our emotional state in dealing with difficult matters.

Her discussion about stereotypes that we internalize really was an 'aha' moment for me- I struggled a lot with depression and anxiety in college and wish someone would have spoken to me about this- it would have helped me understand what I was going through and to treat myself with more kindness

Not sure it’s a good thing that Mayim and I answered the questions at the beginning part of the episode the same way. “Discomfort is the price of admission for a meaningful life” what a fantastic sentence! I was so glad to hear I can learn these skills. No emotion is bad ! That’s a huge difference in how I’ve thought my life. I’m literally working on emotional regulation, how to sit with them etc. This episode is fundamentally life altering for me. It’s giving me another set of skills and capacities that I’ve been working towards. I paused to take the quiz and order the book for same day delivery before finishing the episode. The example Dr Susan gives about the person someone worked with making them feel like their parent did - wow I definitely get hooked on my emotions thoughts and stories. I have not even felt that I had the option to choose. Thank you for another favorite fantastic episode. I’ll definitely be watching again

I'm a huge fan of Dr. Susan's content, and I've been diligently following all her RU-vid videos. I find her work truly exceptional. However, there's something that nags at me in the back of my mind as I immerse myself in these insightful interviews. We discuss topics like Emotional Agility, Avoiding Burnout, and the Perils of Toxic Positivity, which are undeniably valuable. Yet, I can't help but wonder, how do these emotional insights hold up when faced with the stark realities of a world in conflict? Amidst the chaos of war, when bombs drop and violence erupts, it seems like all these discussions on emotional well-being might go out the window. I'm grappling with this thought, and it's been on my mind lately.

To address Dr.Susans point about believing in a possibility but thinking about what could go wrong and preparing for it, I was shocked! I do this, and my husband constantly tells me not to because I'm speaking it into existence or I'm going to be asking for it in a way. That hasn't stopped me from doing it but I did wonder if I should. Now I can tell him its not a bad thing!

Toxic possitivity (“boys don’t cry”), fake strenght & all that stupid things we’re taught while growing vs fear with courage, authenticity & resilience. THAT! To be framed her “The unseen of the self” concept, along with golden “We own our emotions, they doesn’t own us” & “Everyone of us has wisdom, capacity & calm”. How the story of her father death & the glorious teacher has moved me. How finding the right person in the right moment can change a life. Amazing episode. Again. To be watched twice. Btw, did the quiz. Generosity, Caring & Responsability.

Amazed that at every episode of this podcast I, at my early 60’s, still learn something new, valuable, apliccable and very useful to my day to day. Where have you been all my previous 60 years? Emotional Agility. Such a concept. Stopped the podcast, did the full quiz, received (thank you Dr. Susan David!) my full report..and continued listening. Mouthdropped. Literally. Thank you to all you, Mayim, Jonathan & Dr. David for this extraordinary episode and the set of skills I’ve learnt. 🫶🏽

I took the quiz and was thinking about how those 3 important values have changed over the course of my life. As I continue to focus on things I want to change in my own life, those values will continue to change as well. My grandma was married 4 times and 3 of the 4 were over 50. She outlived all of her husbands. She demonstrated that age is what you make it! I say that as I lie here listening while recovering from a hip replacement! Thank you for introducing me to Susan David and her work!

Enneagram 4, I remember reading a book on enneagram with cartoons. I saw myself on top of the mountain with bags of gold and lots of other great stuff and the 4 person is saying it's just not enough. I remember a Far Side cartoon that had a married cow who was not content. I've read and studied the deep stuff but the humor helps keep me grounded. I so love the laughter on this show.

I wish I had someone like you in my youth. I attended a Catholic girls school in downtown, urban L.A. that was populated mostly with hispanic, black and filipino young ladies. The school’s staff did all it could to affirm the potential of each student. Then, was accepted into UCLA, an environment that resonated in multifaceted ways, “you do not belong.” Three years later I left, completely defeated by the experience. Now. almost 40 years later I realize that had a counselor called me in and offered the conversation prompts you describe, I would have graduated a year later.

I was a public school teacher who was often berated for not indiscriminately babbling positive "vibes", as there is a notion perpetuated in public schools that teachers are obligated to paint all things positive for "the good" of the students. The "emotional labor" theory of burnout....explains accurately why public school teachers are burning out at high rates.

This episode was terrific, I am going to watch it again. Thank you, Mayim and Jonathan for this podcast I learn so much. A subject I would like to suggest is the significance of faith (in a higher power whatever you conceive him/her it to be) in our mental health. One book that was a great read for me was "How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings from a Leading Neuroscientist" By: Andrew Newberg M.D., Mark Robert Waldman. Looking forward to your next episode.
