Are you ignoring your true desires, and is your body paying the price? Mayim and Jonathan break down how stress can cause frequent infections, what our bodies are trying to tell us with physical pain & muscle aches, and the potential sinister origins of having low energy. They explain the importance of feeling excited in day-to-day life, how not living the life you want can lead to depression and anxiety, and the underlying psychological conditions that can lead to disordered eating. They also discuss the science behind the effects of sugar, why troubled work and personal relationships may indicate dissatisfaction with one’s quality of life, and the negative effects of not presenting your authentic self to the world.

The problem is people aren’t ignoring our bodies but our doctors are. I can write a book about how awful doctors have been to me and so many I know and I live in a major U.S city. The gaslighting, the refusal to order tests, the verbal abuse, etc. The medical community is in shambles and nobody is talking about it.

This. Our doctors even tell you to ignore your body because they think they know better than our bodies

If you have the opportunity to switch doctors please do their are kind doctor's who want you to listen to your body who fully acknowledge that all though they went to school for x years you know you better than they ever will I am not saying they are the majority but if you can switch doctors and shop around you might get better care

AnaRae you tell it just as it is. This gets worse when one has invisible disabilities. I can't tell you what my Complex Care Dr. Would do. I mean I could tell you, but I don't think you would believe it. It was like the time I got brutally Raped, escaped and by some miracle a cop drove by me. I was taken to the station for questioning and even though I told them where this guy lived they interrogated me for about two hours and they finally went to the guy's house while I was sitting in a room with a towel only. The guy said I was his girlfriend and that I was crazy and insane and made up shit like this all the time. Of course the cops believed him not me who was scratched up and bleeding, but him. I lost all faith in any authority figure whatsoever. Your comment about the medical community is just the same. Thanks.

You are talking about my life. After a decade as a Counsellor in private practice, I ended up getting Chronic fatigue syndrome and terrible back pain. Stopped working and changed my diet to no sugar or carbs, after four months and kinesiology I am finally starting to feel better. Plus my mother died, so no stress there anymore too and I got an inheritance and bought a house so no financial stress now too. So most of my pain has gone now too.

So glad and relieved reading your comment! I'm happy for you that life is getting better. My mother is still alive and still causing lots of trouble for herself and naturally as long as I continue having contact with her, trouble and stress for me as well. She is only 14 years older than me, addicted to meth, and says she's ready to be taken care of as if she was an invalid. Her words not mine. Today I want to search for professional help because I'm certain I need it with a mother like mine. Sandy, many blessing for the rest of your life!

I'm a nurse but I haven't worked as one since Covid. Its the worst profession for self care and health I've ever seen. I worked for years with no breaks no opportunities to urinate when I needed to and having to shove whatever I could find in my mouth to prevent low blood sugar from taking me down. Of course I gained weight. The system is completely broken and these days the nurses have so much responsibility its like they are mini-docs. This is a problem because its a different set of skills and different education path. Don't know if I can go back into it for both my mental and physical health.

A toxic working environment, being myself the leader of a great working team of architects, civil engineers & technicians who design & built public buildings with great results, but being constantly stressed by a person who was the boss because “political acquitances” (we worked fully for the municipality here), a boss only with four years ahead vission of things, with too much work for the people we were, with no free weekends, but me being the shield to all my colleagues from the unwanted ineficient boss, got me seriously sick. Much more than tired. A cancer. And I quit. To cure first. To live, second. Now I’m free of cancer, free of stress. I breathe. Finally. And enjoy my proffession in another, now “normal good” company.

Sometimes your body will tell you something is wrong even when you don't consciously know it yet! Ever since I have become hyper aware of what my body is telling me and it has been the biggest blessing. Our body has so much to say about our entire state of being if we only take the time to truly listen. Thank you SO much for this episode!!!!

As a mom who was a happy teacher, but then followed my then husband down a path of “money money money”, I relate to this so much. While I know I probably would have moved away from education at some point naturally, taking the path I did was not natural for me. I’m not a sales person I don’t like trying to get people to buy what they don’t need. I spent 10 years doing just that. And it made my mind and body sick, plus it kept my alcoholic brain going full bore (even if I wasn’t actively drinking). I had. Lot of money but little happiness. Now I’m basically broke, not sure where I’ll be living in the fall or if I’ll be able to continue to even work part time, however I’m not fearful because I feel at peace finally. I should be freaking out! My old self would be. I am grateful that the tools I learned to use in the rooms of AA help me maintain that peace, remind me to seek out resources, and to let my Higher power steer the ship while I trim the sails. 💪🏻❤️🤙🏻

I've always wondered this, and I've been through quite a number of things that have worn me down to the bone... why the *$%@ does it feel like a certain amount of stress in life is just accepted or allowed? How come it needs to be our reality? Sometimes I feel like my depression, for example, is simply there because I feel like my anger has no place to go, so it gets repressed. Other times I may notice that when I set regular goals and I can't reach one "on time" I also feel depressed. After a while it just feels heavier and heavier. I've also noticed lately that I wasn't conscious of all the sugars I'd been ingesting. Corn chips, sometimes alcohol, potatoes (so many tater tots), jars of peanut butter... so I very much appreciate how holistic this was. Thank you both.

I am right with Jonathan on being mindful about what we are putting in our bodies. I did a 90 day juice cleanse at the end of last year to clean out and reset my gut. I used to take allergy medicine every day for the past 30+ years and no longer need them. My chronic aches have disappeared as well thanks to continuing a most raw vegan diet. Would love for you to have Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson on the show to talk about food addiction and how real that is. And Dr. Brooke Goldner on about food and mental health as well as naturally healing many autoimmune disorders. Hey Mayim, I'd been having weird symptoms for a while but I thought it was linked to my hyperthyroidism. I got worse and worse. I continued working, although from home, and just thought "I'll wait until my next appointment with my endocrinologist" when i should have gone to the ER. My endocrinologist saw the bad state I was in, hospitalized me immediately and ran all the tests. The next day the results came in: I had barely any cortisol left in my body, cortisol (for anyone reading this who may not know) is the number one most important hormone in our body). I would have died if this hadn't been caught right about just on time. I now have been diagnosed with Addison's disease and am fine, grateful for modern medicine and my replacement therapy. I think of all the people I know who will go see all kinds of alternative practitioners before seeing an actual doctor. It can literally put your life at risk to delay medical attention. if something feels wrong, don't ignore it.

I had a milder version of it as a child, but as an adult it got so strong that at one point I was nauseated every day for about 18 months, but I wasn’t associating it with stress or anxiety. My doctor assumed it was dietary and we systematically removed things from my diet and things would improve for a few days and then I’d be sick again. He put me on acid reducers which would work for a week until I felt sick again. This is why it lasted for 18 months!!! After we ran out of things to remove from my diet, and I was really upset about it, one day at work someone made me really angry and my stomach hurt SO BADLY and a wave of nausea hit me. That was the first time I was aware of emotion leading directly to physical feeling. And I remembered my stomach hurting when I was a child and thought WHY DIDNT MY DOCTOR ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS?! He put me on librax, a very very mild anti anxiety medication that focuses on the gut, and told me I wasn’t going to be on it forever, just long enough to give me the ability to figure out how to deal with my stress. I mean, I’m on zoloft now, but that’s different. 😂

You should invite Grant Genereux onto your podcast! He is an engineer who was given a terminal kidney disease diagnosis and suffering from severe eczema, both of which he entirely reversed through a diet which eliminated vitamin A. He has developed a hypothesis that chronic hypervitaminosis A is widespread in the west, due to a variety of possible contributing factors (retinyl palmitate fortification of lowfat milk and boxed cereals, glyphosate contamination of the food supply, high fat intake combined with low fiber intake). He has been on his low-vitamin A diet for over eight years now, with the goal of demonstrating that vitamin A isn't a vitamin at all, but a toxin. This may be incorrect, of course, but his story is fascinating!

"Being chronically sick not number is number one." This is how I grew up, it WAS normal for our household to be sick all the time, and to hide it because my mother knew something was off but was ashamed to really advocate for herself and didn't have the tools/skills to do so. It has taken most of my adult like (late 20s now) to advocate and learn for myself how to be healthy, and the normalcy that people experience with being chronically ill is why I am so interested in functional medicine.

I had the first several symptoms and complained for years of chronic pain. The first thing that became impossible to ignore was how it was affecting my mental health, and my ADHD suddenly seemed unmanageable (I started medication for the first time at 38). I blamed my workload. Eventually I pushed for various tests and it turns out I have a confirmed autoimmune disease and likely endometriosis. So my gut, nervous system and emotional regulation went all out of whack at the same time (Mayim said "it's all one system" - I believe that). I've always eaten well and loved exercising but suddenly couldn't even go for a walk and was constantly hungry (making up for nutritional deficiencies from my autoimmune disease?). Now that I am taking steps to manage each of these health issues, often by resting without feeling guilty, I am enjoying work and life again. I am a better Mom and a better friend now that I stopped listening to the doctors gaslighting me and believing that I was a deficient person. Your body is telling you something, make sure it's heard!

I don't think we should equate suffering and stress with doing something wrong. For example, sometimes you can go through an extreme amount of stress because you LEAVE an abusive or toxic relationship, which doesn't mean that that was a bad decision: it might be worse in the short term for a better long term. I'm going through a lot of stress and bodily issues stemming from that stress right now because I was shunned by my multi-faith community, and it's really hard to navigate that even though I've joined a new, much kinder and more welcoming one -- it's just been a really hard year.

I would be interested in having you explore more about food issues. I think about food all the time until I just have to overeat/binge to take down the pressure. I even plan for them and daydream about it. Ugh

I would love to see you explore and look into intuitive eating - (not the click bate stuff, but the medical studies and official texts) -- I think searching into intuitive eating will make OA take on a different look & I would love to see you especially explore this.

Oh the two of you together bring me joy. “Chocolate and lemonade” = insulin spike! 😂 I’ve never had macaroons… J is right, one piece of sugar makes you want more… good reminder on nutritional value, natural foods, fueling ourselves. * Turn up! Lastly, J’s brother has the right idea to at least, minimally decide to start the day positive. To do anything less, it seems like we’d being going just by our thoughts or feelings… might as well let the weather or wind decide…. 😘

I got ear infections every time the seasons changed (so roughly 4 a year) from the time I was practically out of the womb up until my mid 30s and then they just stopped. (I am now 57 and haven't had an ear infection since I was around 35) However, in my late 30s I started to have symptoms of what I assumed might be early onset menopause, but I also had other symptoms that were concerning. I was tested for thyroid issues (because they were genetic) and I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid brought on by the autoimmune disorder Graves Disease.

My son is chronically sick with heart lung and kidney disease and he doesn't get colds, flus or infections very often. His diet is 100% whole foods, no sugars or preservatives at all. He is tube fed so I am able to blend him foods that are high in natural fats, protein and various nutrients with mct oil added to help reach daily calorie intake. My son is healthier then most of the "normal" healthy kids around him who live on processed foods. ❤❤❤❤❤

Aside from sugar being an addictive substance, craving chocolate specifically is symptomatic of low dopamine and endorphins. It provides a boost, but not in the healthiest way. Kiwis provide the same boosts in a much more beneficial, easily assimilated, and healthy form

A lot of the stuff you’re talking about, like low magnesium, is stuff a doctor isn’t likely to think to test for because of how western medicine treats symptoms instead of searching for causes so much of the time. Plus insurance companies aren’t willing to pay for tests THEY don’t think are necessary, so good luck with that. But you might be able to talk to your doctor about specific deficiencies and try to zero in on what you need. My doctor noticed that my previous doctor had put me on thyroid meds without there being any record of testing my thyroid, so he decided to give me a full blood panel to “get to know me” and start over again. He not only found I didn’t need thyroid meds but I had a serious vitamin D deficiency, and my favorite one was that I had no measles immunity! I was 47 and went my whole life not knowing my vaccination as a baby didn’t take! Now THAT is how herd immunity works… and I got an MMR as an adult just in time for measles to start getting a little out of control again in our population.

that's a little different in my country in Europe, they are willing to test for all kinds of things. Magnesium is tested very routinely for instance.
