100%. I had to stop watching Novara Media because it stressed me out, this hits a great balance and I usually walk away feeling happier than before I watched
@@ghostsethrich7306here for a similar reason, but do find the nonsense banter goes on way too long. Skipped the first 12 minutes and they still haven't started on the politics... wouldn't mind if it was random facts about beavers... but it's not.
💯. I would watch the occasional PoliticsJoe video that was recommended to me and gradually the humour got me hooked where I now never miss the weekly podcasts and am left with the buzz that laughter brings ("laughter is the best medicine" is so true). Works great to sweeten the bitterness that politics often leaves.
I guess these "uberfans" must have missed the Doctor flirting with Captain Jack in the first goddamn series of the show's modern incarnation. Seriously, anyone who thought that the return of Russell T Davies was going to make the show less gay must have completely lost it.
Back in 2007 the world was slightly saner, and not quite so obsessed with culture wars, pointless navel gazing and generally being offended by everything and demanding it be banned, while insisting they were a free speech warrior. 🤷♂
Captain Jack is my favourite doctor companion, however the first episode has some weird lines like the doctor being called out for misgendering the alien or being told by Donna (who only knows who Tennant’s doctor is like and even then her memory was wiped) he was better as a woman. Its poor writing if anything
Ava moaning every episode that we don't get enough into the politics, then giving us a whole turbid dating history of one of her friends and finishing with that one line ❤
Nothing about left vs right. I'm as leftwing as you can get without being a blue haired far left extremist. What they have done to Doctor who is nothing but gravely insulting on multiple fronts. It's not just Dr Who, it's the entire entertainment industry where the battlegrounds are drawn. As much as I don't like the term, there is no other way to describe it. This woke campaign is nothing but a cancer that only seeks to appeal to the mentally ill.
@@joetrent4753 I can tell you for a fact they got the content that provoked outrage completely wrong on all counts - how can they comment on pathetic outrage if they don't know what it was about. There's someone commenting above trying to excuse objecting to gay/ trans representation ...and the pubcast trio were treating this like a joke. This was terrible journalism. Couldn't be bothered to research it and spent half the show giggling about sex while implying DW is a children's show and so... doesn't matter?
The Potter allegory is simple. Starmer is Head Boy Weasley who goes against his family working for Fudge in the ministry and not believing that Voldemort has returned. Done. I better get likes for this.
Starmer is more like JK Rowling pretending to one thing then constantly dropping hints that appeal to bigots before then becoming Queen bigot herself. Starmer is becoming Captain Tory.
I knew Dr who would trigger the right but didn't see it being him saying Newton was attractive lol Also excited for the 100th episode great work everyone
I have completely lost track of things that "would trigger the Right"; pretty much they get triggered by whatever they feel like being triggered by, which is every motherfucking thing.
Frankly, the new new Who is so fast paced and funny that's it's genuinely been a highlight of the last couple of weeks. Not something that could be said of the last few series. Gill, Walsh and Whittaker gave some good performances but the pacing was real slow in places, dialogue with some set pieces rather than adventure and fun.
As a heterosexual male, happy and confident in that. I do not see what the problem with Dr Who is. It does not matter what I see or here on TV, I know it's not going to change how I feel. I think the only people that would be worried about it, are people who are unhappy, and not confident with their sexuality.
Starmer needs to brings in proportional represenation when in power, while these Theatrics are annoying him delivering us a stable truly representive democracy is more important
@CambeulWalker he never said, but the party and the union overwhelming voted for it, and he damn well knows that our democracy is on a knife edge right now. if he fails to act he will be the biggest failure in British democratic history, and I (and I'm sure many others) will rightly rip into him for it.
@@colincampbell4261 Under the Westminster First Past the Post voting system David Cameron's Tories won the 2015 Westminster general election with only 36.8% of the vote, 63.2% of the UK people didn't vote for the Tories in that election. David Cameron's Tories had the disastrous Brexit referendum in 2016.
PR is important but an overhaul of press and media regulations is even more vital. I doubt PR will be introduced in Labour's first term, but I hope I am wrong.
It’s all about the gay space wizards, they’re so in this season. And the guy playing Isaac newton was hot, that’s not queer, it’s simple observation. I’m glad the kids in my family will grow up in a more inclusive culture.
I have watched Dr Who since I was 4 when it returned. It has been part of my life. As a queer person I don’t cry every time I see a straight white male character, I just get a little bored as there are so many and it has been that way for a while, but I don’t resent it as it is import to show all people. I do love seeing representation of my community and reflecting our country ie POC, queers, disable people etc etc. seeing all these majority white cis het men bigots cry (no surprise they are the ones moaning as they are not the centre of attention) does make me laugh .
The vast majority of people who are complaining do not have a problem with representation, this is a sinister misrepresentation. They just don't want their favourite characters changed for the sake of cheaply representing X group. Just make new characters with interesting stories. it's that simple.
In all fairness though your comment doesn't help matters. You sort of assume anyone who doesn't like the change in doctor who is a biggot in some way. I think people should accept that some times change isn't always " for representation " and is often a generic marketing scheme to get appeal to left leaning audiences. Everything disney get involved with becomes a vessel for a woke narrative. It's sci-fi. It's been fine for years and years without gender politics. The reason people are moaning is because they are sick of it being shoehorned into stuff. I know lots of queer / lgbqt friends that are also just as sick of hearing about legacy shows or movies being changed in some way to make it more " woke ". Southpark literally done a special about this exact thing. It's not about being threatened or triggered by some one's politics. Its about " the message " infecting every single classic show or film now and changing already established lore into something else entirley. It's about people being sick of being lectured when they are trying to forget about real life and loose themselves in something sci-fi. People don't want to see every single lead male character in a beloved franchise get talked down to by a woman because " women are strong and don't need no man ' No one ever watched Doctor who and thought. You know what, the doctor always assumes aliens genders. What a douch..... Like it's ridiculous that they thought they needsd to put it in. You telling me it felt natural in the script? Seeing those words in a script. It felt like something the doctor would talk about ? And now suddenly he's into men too ? All since Disney got involved. ? You don't see the link here at all ? No one cares when Daniel Craig had banter in skyfall as James bond admitted to having been with a man before. It felt like something bond was confident to talk about. It fit the narrative. Doctor who at the moment is just being puppeted by Disney. You don't have to be a bigot to disagree with a company like Disney messing with a beloved franchise to " send a message ".
My children didn't like it. They are not bigots or white hets or any denomination you can choose. All the 'representation' made them feel uncomfortable and go 'ewww'.
@@BeanyBop I did not mean it to come across as portraying the people who complain as bigoted. I'll just chalk it up to being very tired after a 12 hour shift. The reason I made a comment is because I've become increasingly frustrated is reading/hearing comments from people who don't seem to care about creating good and interesting narrative and it's got to the point where people like me (who I strongly identify as an old-school left leaning type) can't seem to enjoy anything anymore because this crusade to push the message has greatly impacted quality in an entertainment medium I once held very dear.
Straight white makes are the ones who just seem to quietly get on with getting in, it seems to be the progressive feminist queer types who feel constantly put out when not getting enough attention 🤷🏻♂️
Very deliberately Starmer mentioned what Thatcher aimed to do without actually‘praising’ her. It is no different to Zelenskyy bringing up historical events of certain countries to try and appeal to them. It honestly isn’t that deep Courting Thatcherites sounds about right. It’s fair to question why he feels the need to do that
Because at the very least, Starmer needs to persuade them to stay at home. The awkward issue of being in a First Past The Post electoral system which consistently allows a party to get an absolute majority despite only getting between 25-40% of the popular vote.
Suppressing the opposition vote is almost as good as boosting your own, and potentially easier. Those Thatcherites won’t vote Labour, but if they can be persuaded that Starmer isn’t a dire threat that they absolutely must vote against in order to save the country? (You know, like Corbyn.) Well, then they’ll be more inclined to punish the conservatives for being 💩 by not voting or voting third party.
@samhewson5443 This 1,000%. The issue at hand is whether he gains voters or keeps Tory voters at home. There's a real disparity in coverage between those who've actually read what he said and those who just read a headline (from a Tory paper who might possibly have an incentive to embellish the headline to discredit him). For what it's worth, he 100% should be targeting these voters because every other voter to the left of these ones should be voting Labor/Lib Dem to keep the Tories out. If he gets elected and then starts implementing Thatcherite policies that is the point where we can take real umbrage with him, but this is just basic electrical politics in a FFP system 🤷
@@billybobthornton9668 what bugs me is that the hosts mentioned the contents of the article but because the headline falsely claims Starmer praised Thatcher they’ve been convinced that he was praising her. Media propaganda at its most subliminal
It’s a shame because I really love Oli Eva and the other guy I’ve forgotten the name of haha. Unlike Novara and Owen Jones I actually find them to be a good group, who better represent the Left. Labour’s problem is that not only are there so many Right wing news outlets but the far Left ones regurgitate the rhetoric of the Right and vice versa. I don’t think I agree with the horseshoe theory entirely but where I can agree with it is when it comes to how the far Left and far Right do just as much harm to the UK in terms of keeping the Tories in. And I say that as a soft Left maybe even hard Left Labourman who’d like to see more than Blair, Wilson or Attlee at the next election. To try and use this fake news to undermine even slight positive change is naive and self-injurious
The right-wingnuts so enraged over Doctor Who must not be Whovians as the show had tackled these issues for decades, way before they got angry about everything for no reason. The Meep was brilliantly voiced by Miriam Margolyes and they will be shocked to know that Isaac Newton, the Doctor and Donna never actually met (all revealed in the Unleashed series)
I stand with Ed that this is basic level of HP knowledge. I read the books once as a kid and have seen the movies once (or mabey twice in bits over the years) and none of this knowledge was beyond my reckoning. It felt like taking the piss out of somebody from knowing what a light saber was or who was Luke Skywalkers dad is 😅
Starmer was defending Miners in the Miner stikes & when they couldn't afford it he would do it pro bono. Tbh I really don't think what he said was much praise. Just saying she made change happen and tried to spur on entrepeneuship isn't much praise.
Isn’t the point that they aren’t really a journalist ? I guess they are some kind of model likely from the reality tv sphere like love island or something who occasionally writes columns. No idea who it could be
First we had "Cenetaph Defenders". Now we've got "Wizard defenders" - 2023 is the gift that keeps on giving. Anyway Doesn't Dr. Who always drive right winger's nuts? Or just sci-fi in general? Bros watched TNG and thought the Cardassian were the good guys.
This is the difference between watchers and actual fans, The Doctor and Captain Jack were always flirting, to the point it was basically implied they were a thing. What did make me mad about this episode is they ret-conned Mavity into existence with no explanation! Also, to be fair, soon to be Sir, Isaac Newton, was hot...
I disliked because this was only an hour long. I lied, I left a like, but you guys need to pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and pump out 8 hour podcasts. Daily.
This episode was absolutely insane and I am here for it! You were all on such top form as complete chaos merchants. Also love hearing the crew laughing in the background, it genuinely adds to the hilarity
Submission for the 100th ep. Q&A segment: What lasting impact has the UK'S Westminster system had on excolonies like Australia, Canada and New Zealand? Or alternatively what deviations from the Westminster system have had the most impact on Australia, Canada and New Zealand?🤔 Was going to ask, would you let Russell Brand housesit your teenage niece while you went on holiday, but knew the answer when I remembered the podcasts anti-nonce stance.
If you really want to worry about being cancelled invite my favourite comedian Elliot Steel on and see what comes up. I would heartily endorse this crossover. I'm also immensely f*ed off today so this may be impacting my judgement.
No he hasn't. This is what he said: "Every moment of meaningful change in modern British politics begins with the realisation that politics must act in service of the British people, rather than dictating to them. Margaret Thatcher sought to drag Britain out of its stupor by setting loose our natural entrepreneurialism. Tony Blair reimagined a stale, outdated Labour Party into one that could seize the optimism of the late 90s. A century ago, Clement Attlee wrote that Labour must be a party of duty and patriotism, not abstract theory. To build a “New Jerusalem” meant first casting off the mind-forged manacles. That lesson is as true today as it was then." That is the only mention of Thatcher in the entire article; at best, it's a "well, she tried to change Britain"; not 'she succeeded' or even 'her ideas were kinda-sorta okay, but she wasn't able to fully realise them', but a 'well, she tried'. The Telegraph writing a disingenuous headline and putting the article behind a paywall so that the average person can't see that said headline is writing opposing party campaign material for them.. ... can't imagine why the Telegraph might want to do that, when Labour are 20 points ahead in the polls... /s
@@jamesmeade9501Agreed, sad how frickin' ridiculous people are being about this; offended by the things they imagine were said. No wonder the right are still in power when the left is so eager to create a circular firing squad at the suggestion of the frickin' Telegraph!

Did these commentators obsessed with culture wars forget Captain Jack….? Notoriously bisexual and flirted with the Doctor alot, who also flirted back….? And Torchwood where they went full gay with gay love scenes. Why are they outraged now but not before? They have been whipped into a frenzy.
