awesome if your in loose sand and gravel especially in the water table can you advance the 6" and run a 5' or 10' plug and still penitrate? reason im asking is im in all sand and gravel with some pockets of clay we typically drill through dry whatever then when the water table is located we drill roughly 40' into it and set a screen im wondering if you can continue advancing in such loose material especially in the water table and allow a plug to form to prevent heave? Then clean it out at the final depth with the water like you mentioned ? thanks ang

...now I kinda want you to cut open to that bearing in the middle (might need something stronger than a sawsall tho), let me know what it's made of and what's lubricating it, and how much torque it can handle :D

Hahaha you mean on the lower rotary drive? It's a huge grease-packed planetary gear I do believe.

Hi, Andrea. I've been told that using drilling foam as an additive to your water injection helps hold the heave down a bit. I try to keep my bit back in the casing a foot or so as well. I've just done a few holes with the DR where I've had heavily heaving sands (that weren't water bearing aquifers) and it's come down to pulling the pipe back a few feet so I can butt up the casing and rod while adding the next joint. It's a bit of a pain to deal with since it involves some extra work, but isn't too too bad. I'm kind of anxious to try the foam injection though. In WBS where I'm getting ready to screen, we switch from air to water and load the pipe up with water and then drill out the heave while keeping a head of water on the whole time--a lot like you would with a cable tool.
