Eight days before AirVenture 2018, Mike Patey completed his latest project and flew it to Oshkosh. Draco stole the show and drew awestruck crowds. Draco began life as a PZL Wilga but has been heavily modified into an experimental exhibition category aircraft. A 680-shp Pratt & Whitney PT6A-28 turboprop engine with a 102-inch, four-blade MT propeller powers Draco. The 2,500-pound four-seater takes off in 97 feet, lands in 110 feet, and has a 4,000 fpm climb rate with an approximately 35 mph stall speed. Draco debuted its incredible STOL capabilities at AirVenture’s Twilight Flight Fest STOL competition. Read more about Draco and Mike and Mark Patey in the March issue of EAA Sport Aviation.

Mike is the real star. DRACO is amazing. It's a small measuring stick when it comes to Mike's overall body of aviation work. LEGEND

Have you seen his racing turboprop turbulence? It's a Lancair he bolted a PT-6 to as well. 4500fpm average climb rate at 360kts. It's capable of 380kts flat out and can do 8500fpm at 275kts and will still gain speed. Absolutely bonkers compared to even some military jet trainers.

Hyperious I have seen it. Head over to my channel, I helped build it... ok, I did the equivalent of being handed a paper towel and wiping it down. Lol I have a few videos playing with Mike. ;)

Mike is a freaking idiot! He's lucky no one was hurt when he tried taking off in high winds. Airplanes do not forgive stupidity.

@itsnotallrainbowsandunicor1505
Well, he and his brother just did things without permission. Read their story. www.deseretnews.com/article/865661714/Meet-Utahs-Wright-Bros.html I think when kids can learn to do that, just take things apart, follow their passions and have their parents help out, it really sets up a positive attitude that's hard to knock down. I think so many of us, myself included, end up with so much emotional baggage we end up giving up. Sometimes we start chasing the wrong profession. There are so many examples of people who most of their lives followed the wrong profession due to money, only to regret the decision. What I like about the brothers is they worked with their hands. Something part of society has pushed people away from. I think the combination of brains and hands will get you to many places. It's also being around the right people, or having enough belief in yourself to go on it alone. I also worked with my hands, but always ended up with people who were not supportive. What helped the brothers is their support for each other. As far as going it alone, Blue-Collar Millionaires tfeatured a mechanical engineer who ended up a millionaire by fabricating secret doorways. www.cnbc.com/2017/02/23/this-engineer-turned-his-obsession-into-a-million-dollar-company.html hiddenpassageway.com/

Mike is the Beast... he is a lesson in success in life or aviation. I hope he flys safe. Aviation has risks, but flying low, near edge of envelope a d "bush flying" has risks...

It depends. High? Low? Min power? Max power? etc. But in general, his PT6 eats a little under 28gph and he cruises in the 130-150kt range, and has (generally) a 700nm range.

Draco WAS a great airplane, but it seems to have a problem with quartering side winds on take-off. Especially 40mph+. Pilot Error= Ground Loop= Totaled.
@deanmiles3505
@deanmiles3505 3 года назад
Just an FYI, it wasn't a ground loop...a strong crosswind lifted the wing. At that point Mike unfortunately was just along for the ride. No more aileron or rudder left to compensate. That was one moment I would imagine Mike would have loved to have back. We all can second guess, but Mike had a bad day, which everyone will have or have had something similar. You just do your best not to have one of those days and enjoy flying.

You can't just get your license. You need $ & hrs for each one. By the way, I've seen shorter take offs.
@ke6gwf
@ke6gwf 5 лет назад
Yes, just like any other license, it takes practice, which requires investment, and once you have the practice to get the license, you just go get it! And I have also seen shorter take offs and landings, usually when there was strong headwinds... Lol And there are some planes that are so light that they can float in and out, but they don't have anywhere near the capacity or performance of this one, so other than super short take offs and landings, and very slow travel in between, they aren't very useful.
