Australia. It’s the country where there’s always an insect, animal or sea creature trying to kill you. It’s also the country that once housed a thriving car industry.
But, instead of crying over spilt milk, we’re showing the world one last time why the constant fear of death has inspired our local engineers to build a car that’s itching at the chance to chew you up and spit you out.
The manic HSV GTSR W1 (a title that’s yelled at you in text) represents the fastest and most powerful Australian production car ever built. With only 300 making their way to customer’s hands, it’s unlikely you’ll ever see one on the road.
So - we found an airport in the middle of nowhere and we drag raced the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV against the Mercedes-AMG C63 S and against the BMW M3 Competition and the mighty Australian, the HSV GTSR W1.

Jaikar Chatha its the most extreme and final Australian made version of the vauxhall VXR8 known as the HSV GTS in Australia. The VXR8 is just a rebadged HSV GTS sold outside of Australia. I dont think this car will be sold outside of Australia.

The hsv w1 is a beautiful car. It may have 640 bhp but it weighs nearly 2 tons. Only problem it has is the vxr8 Bathurst s, which is only £35000. Compared to $300000 for the w1??

From my understanding the only car fitted with the W1's Engine was the Corvette ZR1. HSV had to literally collect the ZR1 left over engines from various GM factories until they had enough because GM stoped making them.

This HSV W1 costs upwards of $200,000 used and close to $300,000 new. For everyone surprised that it was able to win doesn't understand that this car has so much more power, and for all that barely even beats out the European cars... If you're talking about how much car you can get for the dollar, no chance in hell anyone would get the W1 over those other three. Not only is it of a much poorer overall build quality, it lacks the luxury of the other two and dare I say reliability as well, this car is a problem on wheels not to mention the fuel it will guzzle. And all that, you're paying 150k more for a car that barely beats the Alfa by 0.1 of a second. NEXT

CarAdvice.com clearly doctored. In the video The Alfa got the jump through first gear, then the camera cut for a split second, next camera angle the HSV has miraculously taken the lead by three car lengths. Either the Alfa misshifted or the results have been doctored. I wonder how much Holden paid?

Pretty simple really, the regular (non S) C63 is not available in Australia. So Comp M3 lines up better with the S - and there you have it!

You might have misunderstood me :) I meant all the comaprisons in general, not this one in specific. I have no idea what is available Down Under. Nevertheless it is obvious that regular M3 and C63 do not stand a chance against the regular Giulia QV. I would really like to see the Holden and the Alfa head 2 head on the track

Soz, I'm Australian and I'm a fan of our HSVs but I would eat my own car if the HSV has a chassis capable of putting that grunt down to best the Alfa over a short distance like the 1/4 mile. Especially as it weighs about 300kg more.

im a mechanic working at a holden dealership and i have driven a couple of those GTSR W1 and i can say that they are an absolute weapon , fast as all fuck and surprisingly good at putting the power down . handling was also pretty damn good for such a big car.

You know, drag race is fun when you put cars from the same sagment against each other . This video is meaningless since you brought the HSV.. because at this point you could bring even the VW Golf Mk1 DragRace. The HSV isn't in the same segment, it doesn't have to be luxurious etc and furthermore, it has 631 BHP... it's like 131BHP more than the others. I would take the other 3 cars anyday.

The HSV is a fantastic sports sedan it's sad to see it go BUT that's just it this car is GMH's tuned up road going "racing car" i.e HSV where as the Alfa hasn't had the magic of Alfa's sports division "Alfa Corse" get their hands on one, regardless anytime soon I'll be owning both ;). Its a huge shame Alfa don't have one with a real gearbox (stick shift) for that alone if I had to choose between the two I'd go for the HSV, to be honest I would go for the HSV regardless it's already a collector's item and rightly so.

Hsv is nice but this test ignores all other elements. Handling, build materials, comfort, grip, interior, sound system, everything. I own a tuned vf2 GTS, and have owned an M3 and a C43 AMG and the Holden's not even in the same class. kind of like comparing C grade to A grade and I'm about as unbiased as you can get having owned all 3. The W1 isn't that different to a regular GTS and certainly not once you turn up the boost and tune it up with bolt ons.

On carwow dragrace it's a M3 Competition Package 450hp. Here it's a normal M3 420hp.

No, that's Competition Package, u can see it says at the very beggining that it produces 444hp(450PS) and also u can recognise that by the 20. inch wheels, which only come with CP. Reason why it lost is cause of the driver. In RWD cars it's all about managing traction, especially at such a short distance that 1/4 mile is. In carwow video guy who was driving Merc messed up the launch, hence it lost. Here, as they said in the video, BMW had traction issues, and so it was defeated. I guess we can say that as far as straight line performace goes, both cars are quite evenly matched.

Don't you think this Drag Race is very biased to the Holden, if you wanted a real drag race then put the Holden against a Mercedes AMG gt because the holden costs about the same

Jeremy Clarkson The W1 costs the same, if not cheaper than these four door sedans. Also the AMG GT isn't a four door sedan.

Actually watch CarAdvices other review claiming "people are spending up to $250,000 on them" The AMG GT was an example of a car costing the same but still there are cars so much better than the W1

yea my mum had the 2012 model before they went to the 5 litre bi-turbo but now we have a CLA 45 and a mate had a brand new from day one a MP4-12c and has bought a new 720S
