The characters are a reflection of American culture war politics which is a huge disappointment considering the various archetypes presented throughout the other games. I bet they make their race/appearance a cornerstone of their personality and will at some point complain about being oppressed or otherwise looked-down upon. Extremely disappointed in every character presented besides Scout Harding...
Don’t forget the Eyebrows/lashes too! Even if you found a semi decent hairstyle, your character would still look absolutely ass. Went to heavy with the tweezers 😂
@@joshuaellison2008 I was talking about the style and look of the trailers but I guess that went right over your head lol plus at close range mage hawke hits with his staff so I guess youre wrong lol
As much seeing the trailer gave me some trepidation regarding its overall tone and vibe, it is very refreshing to finally hear someone go in depth and analyze everything we saw in a more positive light 😅
@@alexanderrose1556 she gets more attention in the comics. Why create a whole new companion character when you can instead flesh out a pre-existing character that has so much potential? She may not have had the biggest impact in inquisition, but many players (me included) always wished she was given more content/a spotlight.
@@inkygreen the vast majority of people who are gonna play this game have not read the comics, hell the vast majority of people who MIGHT play this game probaly isnt even aware that there were comics for this IP
@alexanderrose1556 lots of these characters originated from the comics. Cole of DAI was introduced through a novel. Which i read after playing inquisition. It doesnt really matter if you played past games or read the novels or comics. You can pick up the gist of the stories through dialog or just asking questions.
Im trying to understand how do we get so much doom and gloom from a companions showcase not a deep dive game play or even a story trailer just a simple companions trailer Like people are literally upset with how it looks which tells me that these same people never watched a dragon age trailer a day in there life because these type of trailers are normal for the dragon age games hell not even just dragon age games look at Diablo and elder scrolls games all of there games have incredibly graphical trailers that does not represent how the actual game is gonna look so whats with the doom and gloom i will never understand the gaming community
17:37 about that sort of lyrium dagger, Ghil Dirthalen mentioned on the livestream she did with Princess_Goose that this dagger might be related to what Solas was holding during the "Dreadwolf" teaser of so many years ago. Makes me think that dagger will get in our hands, wheter by taking it or by accident, and we'll have to do what Solas was attempting in trying to finish the rising Evanuris, or maybe we're just a part of his plan, who knows. Last point I wanna make, the new "magical abilities" of Harding and the wings appearing on Davrin(?) makes me think of two possibilities: - Either Solas partially tore down the vail hence magic is awakening in some people who previously were not mages; - Or we, Rook, can bestow/awaken magic in our companion, maybe using said Lyrium dagger
I like the idea of magic seeping into the world through a torn but not broken veil. That is another interesting reason for Harding to have magic. Past clues point to the titans giving dwarves magic (Valta) but we don't know. It is hard to tell who was the character with the purple wings. I have heard Lucanis or Devron, but maybe it is Rook.
What did you despise about it? I loathed it, too, but I'm curious to see what other DA fans are getting nervy about. I've not really been a part of the community for a very long time, so I'm out of the loop.
@@SabiJD Devs completely abandoned the darker and more serious tones to appeal to "modern audiences". Made it colorful, with hero-shooter splash arts for characters, everyone is having fun and quipping the whole time... just dreadful.
I didn't recognize Varric until he started speaking. I understand he may be older. But they completely changed the style. Not to mention the way they introduced the characters seems more like a borderlands trailer rather than a dragon age trailer. It feels more modern instead of fantasy. There's something else I do not like about it but I don't know what words best describe it.
I feel like if they had called it "Character reveal trailer" I could have understood the drastic change from: *somber, dark and "we need a hero or the world will end"* to *Boom! Slowmotion! Baam! Yeah! We could be heroes, just for one day!* ... a bit better
Looking at all the reactions to the trailer really /boggles. With reduced staff/resources, would MUCH RATHER they spend time working on the game than polishing a damn trailer. This was supposed to introduce the companions, and it did. I’m still hyped for this game, and really don’t get the big deal over the doomsaying.
Besides that, the flamboyant tone suits Varric's storytelling flair so I'm not seeing the issue? it's just a short trailer to show you who the characters are and look kind of cool to incite curiosity. Don't understand what the problem is...
I really like this batch of companions, def looking forward to learning more about them. Also some of the ingame shots they've shared look awesome. Can't wait till tomorrow to see the gameplay!? Please be good!!
After checking all the trailer comments, I was feeling a bit sad about the whole reveal. But this video reignited my excitement !! Thank you Jackdaw !!!
Same! There's been a lot of negativity and it is sad. I do see why people are hating aspects of it but I'm holding off until we get gameplay to decide if I'm disappointed or not !
I recommend just ignoring the comment sections on the trailers, there's some vile toxicity going around. The Reddit is slightly better, but it depends on what post you read. It's all a lot of noise surrounding the trailer, but I think people should wait until Tuesday before assuming the game will be some happy-go-lucky hero FPS.
Same, I was so happy to watch the Xbox showcase and react to the DAV trailer with Jackdaw, Lisa, and Lambo. Only positive vibes from them and overall the live chat. I’m sticking to mainly Jackdaw’s channel for Dragon Age news from now on
@@Sharie_mabariI'm not sure what toxicity you're referring to (gamergate flavoured drivel, perhaps? I've not looked at any responses yet), but given how DA:O started, and the wild identity crisis it's gone through, Veilguard's teaser was--- well, kinda mortifying... Especially in light of the very suspicious statements re the recent name change. The more cartoony style/presentation and spiel about a 'focus on our characters'? I don't blame anyone for utterly dread[wolf...]ing they're about to see the series they've loved for so long, trashed into a co-op nightmare. There's a possibility the series is about to end/die for me on Tuesday. However... Promo cinematics tend to be awful where actual gameplay is concerned. So hopefully it's just that, and we at least get something as good/bad/inconsistent as Inquisition. For me the character writing is what matters most. So we'll see. I am incredibly nervous, though...
@@SabiJDexactly. It’s frustrating that one can’t express their honestly, justified disappointment without people calling them “vile and toxic”. Ironically it’s toxic positivity. (Not talking about people who are actually being “vile” but honestly I’ve read hundreds of comments on Yt, twitter and Reddit and people are mostly complaining about the tone and art style. There are some bigots but they’re few
The blue lanterns in the ending shot reminds me of the Lights of Arlathan from Dragon Age Origins's Witch Hunt DLC. If we are going to the black city, then I'm stoked for this.
Thank you for an actual positive video that isn't all gloom and doom! I knew people were gonna trash this game no matter what, but it's still disheartening to see.
As a fan since Origins, this teaser - especially combined with the recent statement about the name change - is incredibly worrying. Fans are pretty justified in being incredibly nervous right now. I think the teaser deserves to be 'trashed' in that sense, as it feels like a real misjudgement of tone. More something you'd expect from a co-op GAAS than a proper SP action RPG. For some, tomorrow might be the end of their favourite series. And if it's not, well, then it was a truly terrible teaser if it did not reflect the game's real tone or identity.
@@craserx6267 That's a quite myopic approach to game design. Are co-op GAAS's known for their great writing, however? Veilguard's teaser might as well have had TikTok/IG friendly music drops... Is that vibe what most DA fans really want? If all I cared about was writing, I'd still see reason to worry. I generally say character narrative is what I care about most with BioWare. But DA:I tested that with a poor main story and quite bad gameplay. Change the series into a genre I habitually spurn, and I'm not sure I can stick with it. Commerce and fads will have killed DA. If I'm wrong - great. But that would reinforce how awful this teaser was.
@@SabiJD If writing is what u care about, this trailer and namechage will have already killed da for you. tomorrow wont change anything for better or worse.
@@craserx6267 I don't quite follow. Isn't that contradicting what you said previously? That you can't judge what the game might be re writing, just based off of this teaser?
I'm going to keep an eye on Emmrich, I just noticed how every companion has a one or two word description of their personality except for Emmerich. Bellara is creative and romantic, Davrin is bold yet charming, Harding has a big heart and a positive outlook, Lucanis is poised and pragmatic, Neve is a cynic yet she's hopeful for a better future, and Taash is adventurous and a risk taker, yet we get nothing on Emmrich, only knowing he is charming from his short story. If well over a decade of loving and studying Dragon Age has taught me anything, it's that the devil is in the detail, and this looks kind of sus to me, my money is on him betraying us ❤ or I could be looking too deeply on this matter 😂😂
The DA X account poublished 20 seconds of a sneak peak gameplay reveal ADN IT'S GLORIOUS, they said they are extending the demostration to TEWNTY MINUTES
thank u for a breakdown of the important aspects of the trailer without any negativity about the less important aspects. i am so excited and cant wait to see what the gameplay reveal will look like tuesday! and OMG we get the game this fall!!
Thanks so much for putting out such a positive vid among all the negativity! Really hoping the gameplay demo puts most of people’s worries over the art style to bed.
I'm interested in Harding, Taash or Neve. Though I am wondering the inquisitor I'm planning to take through ,if we can, is my elfquisitor who manced Cassandra with Lelianna as Divine. In that one, Harding ended up with Sera for some reason if memory serves? So what happened there? I'm also worried about the magic bit for Harding. She is a Dwarf, so shes not supposed to be able to use magic. I'm also hoping that that explanation will make sense. Closest dwarfs have to a mage is Sandal and all he can do is enchant stuff. Then of course there was Dagna, but again she was a dwarf and thus incapable of using magic. So what, Titan shenanigans? We know Lyrium is used for magic and that lyriun is titan blood with red lyrium coming from a blighted titan.
Lol the Elton look... The tinfoil hat king is here to stay! Seriously though, thank you Jack, Lisa and Lambo for clowning events in hopes of seeing some crumbs of news these last years -- the commitment has been insane! Dragon Age Summer is finally here and I'm so ready for it! There will be so much stuff to talk about! Did not absolutely love the companion trailer, but I am so excited to see the gameplay on Tuesday! I think the marketing decisions here are a little questionable but I think the gameplay will show off what the game truly is. As for companions, Bellara is my favourite so far! Davrin and his griffon companion also interest me, however. Nameable griffon? Lastly, Scout Harding's unexpected magical powers are VERY interesting! Ugh, I wish it was fall 2024 already!
Here’s something for everyone to chew on, we now know because of Ghil Dirthalen that they had community members involved with the game. Makes me excited for the story cause she seems excited in her little video
LUCANIS IS SO GOOD. I am weak for a cool rogue/assassin character I am going to romance the heck out of him. The only downside is I can’t play a rogue like I like to do but I’ll take the L. I really love all of these companions!!! I’m glad they limited them to 7 because they all are interesting and hopefully have great quests and stuff. I AM SO EXCITED. Following this game for years is finally paying off. I hope we learn more about Rook (if we get backgrounds, a look at the character creator, etc) so I can start to plan a character for this game!!! SUPER EXCITED!
Davrin broke into my heart and refuses to ever leave so I GUESS I KNOW WHO IM GONNA ROMANCE 🤭🤭 But ohhh my lord i love all of the characters so much already!!!
Holding my hopes up but the cartoonish graphic just doesn’t feel right, and the tone of the whole thing seems a bit too much like the dragon age version of the avengers. Seriously hope I got this wrong.
i really hope varric isnt in the story just to die. hed be a great go-between rook and the rest of the inquisition. from what i remember, he should be in his 50s in this game, so it wouldnt be surprising if he retires from fighting but continues to act as an advisor.
I wonder if we will be able to give ourselves/our character a first name as in the first three entries. I do like "Rook" as much as "Hawke" and "Cousland".
@@_tasiaxnot Ah, I hadn't watched the video yet. Hm, to me that's not a confirmation at all. I'd still expect restrictions in choice. But the comment could mean that, too. I'd like that, if so. I understand both sides of the discussion, but to me player choice should take priority.
Initially I was disappointed by trailer. But the more I look at it, the more I understand, that i just don't like music choice and this "title" cards for companions. If i remove it and put some other music on - it looks great. Can't wait for gameplay reveal, hopefully with specific release date. Thank you for carrying me through years of news drought QQ
Doesn't it just scream 'co-op action', though? Especially given the recent - worrying - statement re the name change. The statement seems to be 1, and this terrible teaser is another 1. And 1 + 1 might = the 2 of co-op... even a co-op games-as-service. DA's had a weird, inconsistent history, but even with Inquisition I just about loved it. It seems like the industry might be about to kill off, effectively, one of my all time favourite series' tomorrow. Suffice to say I am nervous...
@@SabiJDWell, we know it's not. Devs have said as much. And really, it seems like a call back to Leliana's Song which makes sense because in both cases you're bringing together a small, specialized crew.
I know that the glitter is first and foremost for Taylor Swift's concert but the fact that we are getting so much news about Dragon Age makes me want to dress up in the most glittery, extravagant outfit too, just to celebrate DRAGON AGE SUMMER 🔥🥳🎉
I like the party outfit! Thank you for all the news throughout the years. I can't believe it's been 10 years since Inquisition and immediately after I finished it I was searching all over for info on the next game. There's a note you can find in the Hinterlands in Inquisition that talks about how it's been 10 years since the blight, children don't know what a Darkspawn is... and now IRL, it's been 10 years since Inquisition 😭
Wait, Davrin is voiced by the same guy who voice Javik? For real?!! I am so excited to have that voice say nice things to me for a change. SUCH a sexy voice, but Javik was so harsh to my Shep, lol
I think everyone losing their minds over the tone and art style needs to calm down. 1. The tone in a single trailer isn’t indicative of the entire game. DAI had tons of moody trailers, then had Dorian screaming "I'm too pretty to die!" mid-combat in the actual game. Sara also existed in that game. 2. While the trailer was made in-engine, it's still just a trailer. The entire game WON'T look like that. 3. Realise that you and I have been playing the same game for 10 years, so, obviously anything that looks remotely different will seem weird to us. Let's be patient for the gameplay trailer where we'll see the game properly.
It's important to remember that trailers are indicative of the overall style of the game. It's not fair to impose personal standards on others with different priorities. The trailer is a form of advertising and should accurately represent the final product, even if it's a cinematic one. For example, the cinematic trailers for Origins effectively conveyed the game's aesthetic.
@@Vhaal-666 but that's just the thing: this isn't the only trailer we've gotten for this game. The darkness, the grittiness, has been already been shown to us.
Yeah, I really think people just need to wait and see before crying "Dragon Age is dead!". I saw some of the "consultants" (fans who got to give feedback) say on Twitter that they gave a lot of feedback on the art style and things do look a lot better in the final game, so I really wouldn't be too worried. I think the Game Informer picture is closer to what the actual game will look like.
From 3 years ago. And they have admitted they changed the game a ton since then. That other trailer was for dreadwolf. Veilguard is indicative of the shift, they have said as much themselves. @unorthodoxunicorn1307
@@Vhaal-666 I would bet my money on that companions trailer being a strange marketing decision from EA to appeal to a younger audience, honestly. It doesn't fit any of the other things they've shown, including the Dragon Age Day trailer from last december. They haven't changed the game since last December, that'd be absolutely impossible, so therefore the things seen in that trailer will still be in the game.
I REALLY needed this video, it gave me a much more positive outlook of what to expect. Like many, the style of the trailer caught me off guard but after watching it a few times and seeing the more accurate in game visuals I am pretty excited for more. Also Neve looks gorgeous and if there is a chance, Emmrich just happens to appear extremely cartoonish in this style but ends up more realistic in the final product, then that's a solid gilf in my books.
if you're upset by the upbeat tone of the trailer that is valid, it threw me off too. if you're upset because bioware put diverse characters into a game series that has always used fantasy allegories for real life oppression and marginalization, that's dumb. these games have always been diverse. diversity is good. stop being weird.
If you look at the dragon Taash is fighting and then compare it to the size of the one in the last scene, it is undoubtedly a Great Dragon. Like what we saw from When They Sleep.
@@Rosef1relike they did with DA:I either Morgan was the Dragon or it was a regular dragon. If they are creative enough they will come up with something
Here is an idea. The dragon at the end of the trailer is an elven god that had just been found by the dark spawn but not yet corrupted into an old god.
@@Direwolf9818 There's a codex that a priestess who was punished for "taking sacred form" (From the Wiki: The sinner who dared to fly in the shape of the divine took wings at the urging of Ghilan'nain) which, since Flemeth turns into a dragon, and has a dragon loyal to her, people think means they could turn into dragons. It's not that they were dragons, but that they could change into them and the form was so sacred that other elves were forbidden from doing it too. So if that dragon IS one of the elven gods, then they've shapeshifted into a "divine form" and are not a dragon in the conventional sense. Just an interesting little piece of lore
For everyone worried about the art style Jackdaw shows the image from gameinformer at 23:16 which looks like an upgraded version of Inquisition and it is probably a more accurate representation of what the game will actually look like. The gameplay showcase is also in 27 hours so confirmation really isn't that far off. As for the lightheartedness while worrying all the other trailers had a much darker vibe to them including one just 6 months ago and there is no way they changed the entire feel of the game since then. Lets hold off on judgment until the game releases.
I can always count on you to bring the hype and locked in analysis! It's been so long that the dragon age fan part of my brain was slow to get excited, even after the trailer. But your vid has my brain buzzing with excitement again!
Honestly I get that (I love how Dorian’s sexuality was handled in Inquisition, for example), but I think a lot of people play for escapism too. And sometimes getting rejected by the single character you wanna smooch in a video game kind of breaks your immersion from that lol. Plus, the huge success bg3 had employing that same system might have had something to do with BioWare returning to their DA2 approach.
I have not been so excited about Dragon Age news in years. Reminds me of how excited I was for the Dragon Age 2 trailers and reveals. I love that I will finally be able to romance Lace Harding😊💜💖
im so happy there are loyal fans who focus on the positives of this reveal trailer, my youtube suggest is full of trashing videos. Like okay people its a cinematic trailer of course they wont look like this.
I feel the same, it’s kind of overwhelming to the point of not knowing what to add? Like- sure, I wasn’t the big fan of the initial tone of this trailer, but that was a total after thought from my initial excitement.
@@Dsaysalot Dragon age confirmed in chat just now following : During the character creation process, you'll be able to customize your Inquisitor from the last game's story, and make a few key decisions that will impact how The Veilguard begins.
I'm noncommittal about it all tbf, although I'm not blind. I can physically see that the art style is more akin to We Happy Few than the older Dragon Age games. That's not a criticism. It's just an observation in the same way I can physically tell my daughters look different as teenagers than she did when she was 6 months old. In fact although both were born with red hair, one went blonde around 4-5. Again not a criticism, she gets it from her mum who I obviously find attractive but I can physically see her hair is different. that said though you can't call someone disloyal for having a different opinion to you. It's a consumer product at the end of the day. I love Lord of the Rings but The Hobbit films a meh. RoboCop is my favourite all time film but I genuinely pretend 3 doesn't exist. It doesn't mean I'm not loyal to Robocop (whatever that means). It just means Robocop 3 was an awful kids film to sell toys while Robocop 1 was an ultra violent cyberpunk film made for adults. Same with The Mummy. First two films, amazing. The third one? Not so much. Doesn't make me less of a fan of the originals (Brendan Fraser films that is). It just means the thirds crap. I love Hitman but Absolution wasn't a Hitman game. There are people who don't like the new Assassin's Creeds (I do but they don't). They're still loyal fans. More so in fact because they value what made the series great. I don't care about the series so I don't care that it changed. I only really like DA Origins and that's why I don't really care about this one. I'd argue true fans would care because they value and want to hold dear the original vision of the series
I am so glad to see a positive and excited video about this game. I'm so tired of people's cynicism over one companion reveal trailer. People need to chill!
its great to see a dragon age RU-vidr not be all like the trailer looks cartoony and the soul is gone blah blah and actually be excited and hopeful cause everyones comments about i don't like the trailer was really annoying me so thank you jackedaw for being positive about the trailer
