It's been 1.5 years since I set up my dragon fruit alley here at the Epic Homestead, and they've grown in well...but I need to prune them back and assess their health to make sure they keep producing for years to come.

Last year i sowed a bunch of supermarket dragonfruit seeds. On try 2 i ended up with 9 plants. They have been in and out the house to keep them away from the cold. They are now an average of 10cm tall. Cant wait for them to get that big. 4 more years to go as I heard.

@@brandoncomeau130 My tips for Dragon Fruit: Good Soil (Fox Farm and/or Miracle Grow potting mix), lots of sunlight, a good support or trellis, and tropical climate (I’m in Zone 10B). Dragon Fruit trees are basically tropical cactus. I have videos on how I grew them from seeds using recycled plastic containers and how they’ve been growing since. I will do a video of them specifically soon once the flower opens.

Like you I started last year with two different varieties. From my experience two factors are detrimental for growth: variety and sun exposure. I have seeds from yellow white flesh and red white flesh fruits. I have 4 yellow dragons which are >50cm, while my tallest red ones are ~20cm. Since I grow them in two pots only, I have plants which grow in the shadow of taller ones. These exhibit very slow growth. Also, my climat zone is somewhere between 6b-7b, so I have to have my plants in house in winter with ~20°C room temperature.

I grow tiny seedlings myself. Since I live in the south its not crazy for me to grow them. I'm just starting from seed so it'll take longer to get to this point. Here in Hawaii, we are so fortunate that we can grow such uniquely tropical plants. I literally have 30 trellises with dragonfruit constantly giving. So much so, that I give alot away to close friends and family and whatever we don’t want to eat, I trade them with our local farmers market or sell it to them and make a few bucks. Pretty cool stuff.

This is a really fun video. I'd love to see one for permanent plants you'd put in- perhaps considering zones that might have a frost. We have blackberries, and they come back every year, produce well, and are totally worth their permanent place in our small yard. I tried to grow Dragonfruit a few years ago, and we just weren't quite in the right zone for it. It lasted a couple years but never grew well. Now I'm in a questionable zone again- technically zone 9, we do get some frost which is manageable, but we get a lot of really hot days, 100-120 degrees, and I'm not sure what can withstand our awful temperatures.

I've been growing some baby Ecuador variety from seed, they are tiny little things but have been slowly getting thicker over time. It's going to be a VERY long time before I have to worry about trimming anything off, but thank you for sharing. My little seedlings are about a year and a a half now, I don't expect them to get too big for at least a few more years.
