Man what a scene the way how Vearn speaks about humans is so dang truthful. Dai faced fear and discrimination when taking down a dragon. Then after seeing the memories of his father, he understood what and why his father became what he became.
I compare this scene as Starwars when the hero is tempted by the dark side, Vearn is like to Palpatine, Baran is like Darth Vader and Dai is like Luke Skywalker.
If King Vearn had not been evil, I think he would have gotten along very well with Dai, he would have been an excellent Master for Him. King Vearn is the wisest being, more than the Gods, Dai would have learned a lot from Him.
Well Its just that he recognize them as strong people. But that stop here. He burn Baran corpse because it would upset Dai, not because he have no respect for them. And you can see later in the fight how big of an impression Baran left on Vearn
As good as this moment for Vearn is, it always fall short due to a problem a lot of villains in this type of setting face in Japanese media : the people are never the monsters the villains claim them to be. This hits viscerally for the viewer but never for the main characters because at worst their humans are just petty and whiny, not the disgusting monsters equal to the demons they fight against that the villains claim them to be.
In Dragon Quest they actually are. Baran’s treatment is a good proof of that. And the effect on Dai are lethal cause that is literally the reason why he wanted to leave the surface after beating Vearn, and for him it meant Death. A cruel destiny/burden put on a 12 years old kid due to Human being scared of what they don’t understand. That scene aged well in DQ Dai
@@celrokproduction Monsters and human are not really that "different". In the story, Hadlar was a monster(literally), yet he was more than willing to save Pop. A bunch of human was more than willing to execute Baran just because Baran had power. Both human and monster have their bad sides. The key thing here is, is the Bad Side > the Good Side, or the other way around
@@celrokproduction @金剛型 I'd like to address both claims here since that implies that humans are monsters in that world; Baran was hunted down not because humans were monsters but because two people specifically jealous of him, plotted and presented falsified evidence against the king and his men and the king, horrified at the implications, mobilised an army against him, in shock of what happened to his daughter. Same with the villagers. Baran's case is similar to Hyunkel's, where a shadow in his back whispered him negative stuff until it corrupted his mind and gave in to fear. When it comes to Hadlar, he's presented as the exception of the monsters and even then he had done some really horrible stuff, like killing Hyunkel's adopted father taking him years and two rebirths to see the error of his ways; and that error came from meeting with Dai and his friends, the most bright of all the shining beacons of humanity. In the series, humans are shown to be extremely capable of cleansing spirits and bridging relationships all the time unless some horrific influence is in the air, in the case of most monsters and animals being Vearn's mere existence. But Hadlar was always really evil and vile and even he somehow got to repent, post mortem with Hym. Even Crocodyne, who was a monster as well repented and became an ally due to that cleansing human spirit. Roto's Emblem, a dragon quest manga that run along with Dai's Adventure, presented that aspect of humans being as capable as monsters much more prominently and was much darker in that aspect and that's fine, because Dai was never about that story. To put it simply, two humans been sick, plotting scum that abuse others isn't the same as 75% of the monsters being the incarnation of pure evil.
@@RiderWithTheScarf but its still show how cruel human can be. May be 2 people or a entire country, as long as you show how human CAN act as monster as I try to implied, you get the point across. They didn't think twice to execute him even tho he saved them before and they knew who he was. Now in DQ Dai as you said human are 90% of the time showed as the good side, but remember also that Dai first opponents ever were humans who Basically were poacher and were very discriminative toward Dai and the monster. the monsters were the nice ones in that scenario. You already get the point across that human can be like that so Vearn statement stay true and consistant.
It's more like "Will you be my ally" Baran was a "servant" to no one. He was the DRAGON KNIGHT, the most powerful creature. In the manga at least they translated as "ally" or "Will you join my side"
