Still I find it amusing that in the original game, the animators had to use playboy magezines for reference because they couldn't hire any female models
Comparing THEATRICAL quality cartoons against SATURDAY MORNING shows? Sound fair enough, right? >.< It never ceases to amaze me how people come to watch cartoons based on hot property and whine about how "crappy" they are. Seriously. They (as always) fail to understand how the animation industry worked back in the 70's-80's, studios such as Hanna-Barbera, Filmation, and Ruby-Spears made limited animation a standard due to the ever growing demand of new material for the kiddies (and never ending pressure from network execs). Producing a series with the same level of quality as the original source (such as Dragon's Lair) would have not only taken forever to complete, but it would've been terribly expensive as well. These whining, hating trolls don't have a clue. And of course aspects of the game had to be toned down for the cartoon, from Daphne's appearance and garb to the level of violence. Another example that comes to mind are the classic Tom & Jerry shorts from the 40's - haters love to compare them to the lowest quality version of the characters, which would be no doubt, The Tom & Jerry Comedy Show from 1980. The one thing I really liked from this show was when, just before the commercial break, Dirk had to make a choice (fight an enemy or run away for example) and the narrator asked "What should Dirk do? What would you DO?" Back from the commercial we got to see if we made the right choice (or see the consequences of a bad decision) but to get the story going of course, Dirk always made the right choice. This dynamic really captured the spirit of the original game.
I remember me and my friend were in 5th grade when this came out. We were absolute Dragonslair fanatics and eagerly anticipated this cartoon. I spent the night at my friends house the night before its Saturday morning premier..........and then this crap came on the next morning.....heartbreaking. They didn't even try to make it good.
Never had a chance to see this TV series growing up (despite being OBSESSED with the arcade game), but this looks God AWFUL! Thanks for sharing though!
just to defend the animation we have to remember the game was made using Laserdisk technology and had DON FUCKING BLUTH work on the game so yeah while the show might suck i'm just here to play devil's advocate a bit
Man.... This must have been a major disappointment to fans of the game back in the day. I know for a massive Bluth fan such as myself, this level of quality is almost a betrayal!
Fans of 80s entertainment. Get on Twitter, tweet to Netflix this link. Even if you don't have Netflix it's a support of the 80s and that's rad for something right?
Wow... when even the opening titles have bad animation, you know you're in trouble. Strange that the spin off for a game renowned for it's quality animation...
instead of using a trashy mens magazine for reference they should have used cosmopolitian magazine they have some clean nice fully clothed models in it me being a women i should know btw i think that dirk is cute not male model cute but average cute
what year did it come out???? i loved this cartoon as a kid and when dungeons and dragons came out and was put back on tv a few years ago......it made saturdays great again....well before michelle obama killed it
***** Actually, there's a rather... Interesting reason as to why this crap existed.Even though now there's barely any new TV shows based off something popular and huge (...I think it's better off that way..... XD), back in the 80's and even the Early 90's, there was a huge deal that went like this: If the video game, movie or even toy got popular, a TV show was almost NECESSARY!!!!! Of course, while most of these might have, at first, been thought up as neat ideas (I bet this would've had some potential), they sadly ended up being low budget crap fests (like this) that, in some cases, barely made it into even one episode (Bubsy, Battletoads, etc,.). Once in a while, you'll find some gold under the crapper (TMNT, Transformers, He-Man.... Though it's somewhat arguable, Earthworm Jim, etc,.), but sadly, you still had the huge crapper in front of you. Thankfully, most of these shows would have some very low ratings, and usually got canceled.... Yet, somehow, the TV industry didn't learn the lesson of "Not Every Show Based Off Something Big Works" until probably the Mid 90's. -_- ...You know, I have to wonder if this is like Jerry Lewis with The Day the Clown Cried when it comes to Don Bluth and this show: Never wants to mention it, hates it, and wants it out of public viewing... even though this, sadly, can still be seen by innocent children due to the parent's lack of knowledge of this show.... Or, they'd probably confuse it with the actual game. XD
