One interesting thing about this version is that it has a full set of DQ4 monster medals in the rom. So it's possible a DQ4 port to GBC was planned at some point before being scrapped.
They did a fantastic job with the Colors in this port! Not to mention how much gameplay they crammed into this thing! Its impressive to say the least! The way I look at it is to compare it to the NES version, but with all the SNES port content added in, which is amazing as that new content is truly fantastic & breathes new life into the game. The new character classes & Pachisi boards make you wonder how you ever played the game without them! It's so much more fun with the added content.
DQ3 was indeed the very first DQ game that gave a full, modern RPG experience imo, specially this and the SNES port with the added content! The added content is SO good that I can't imagine ever going back to the NES original!
Seeing the monster sprites animate as they do, on the GBC, is pretty impressive. Way more attack animation frames than what you'd see on Pokemon, on the same hardware. I played this version of the game, as my first time playing DQ3, and I'm still amazed at what they pulled off.
"Way more attack animation frames than what you'd see on Pokemon" Well, the difference is that there are 252 Pokemon (504 if you count Shiny Pokemon) And then 252 backsprites (504 if you count Shiny backsprites) Which results in uhmmmm... 504 normal sprites (And 1008 sprites if you include shinies) So yeah, there's a reason why the attack sprites aren't as impressive as in DQ3
I still have the game that my mom bought me for Christmas in 2001. To bad it doesn't work anymore. Hopefully i can find a way to repair it. I love dragon quest 3
GTA was ported to the GBC and didn't lose much. Anyway this game was a perfect port to the Gameboy colour, it is also a perfect handheld RPG. I played this game on a GBA SP and it was a great experience, I preferred this to golden sun really
I have said it many times, it is the best game on the GBC. I can’t believe the Switch version got rid of stuff that was in this version. The only way to play this game is the Super Famicom port or the GBC version. I wouldn’t recommend NES or Switch (and I am not talking about the one that will come out later).
I'm torn on it. I feel like I can't live without the sprite animations and original spell (and monster) names from the GBC version... but, the tactics system in the switch version is pretty cool. (I would also like to complain that the switch version is simply a port of the mobile version. What the heck, Nintendo?) With tactics, you can set the other members in your party to behave a certain way without your input. I found this makes them cheat sometimes. The cleric will heal someone that no one knew was going to be attacked. Or an enemy monster will summon another monster, and someone in your party will target him despite that monster not being a target when you decided turn actions. Also... the switch version allows you to name your character with more than four letters.
I will never get over the fact that someone thought "Frizz" was a better spell name than "Blaze." Or that "Whoosh" was a better name than "Infernos." Come on!
I just started this game not too long ago! I'm fairly new to DQ3 GBC but I played the GB port of I+II and I always vouch for these games as the current definitive version of these games (except for possibly the SFC port translated but I'm not familiar with the fan translations for these games 😓). It's insane that the original DQ trilogy came to modern digital storefronts in the most ugly form imaginable when these GBC ports are right here and honestly look *really* good
Its just really sad that this game was never released in Europe... The only versions of DQ1-3 we have ever gotten over here is the Switch remakes that doesn't look great. I am really looking forward to the DQ3 HD2D remake to hopefully finally getting to play a good version of this game
This isn't really an "impossible" port considering it originated on the NES. A GREAT version of an awesome game? Of course. "Impossible port" however? Nah. Far from it. If anything the GBC is perfectly suited to this kind of game.
@@MySpottyGirlfriend I wouldn't even say "on its own merits"... It's BETTER than its NES predecessor in every conceivable way. lol The NES game was GREAT in its day... the GBC version just IMPROVED on that excellent game.
Sadly, unlike DQ1+2, this port really is scaled down. Not just in graphics, but with music as well. The music loops wayy earlier than in the SFC version. DQ1+2 didn't have this issue.
@@abuenomaster4154The monster/spell animations are done much better on SNES. The quality gap is too big, bigger than between 1/2 SNES vs. GBC. 1 and 2 ports feel tailor-made for the GBC. 3 port feels downscaled and unfitting.
@@Thirteen13551355 I know alr, but is true the only issue is the music but is a NICE port tbh i got my own cartridge and I think is a nice port and unique man DQIII is another level man you had another bonuses dungeon and a lot features
