I find it fascinating that these two gurus of power metal shred have managed to coexist in the same band for this many years. No hint of egos clashing, nor jealousy. In fact, they seem to genuinely like to be in each other’s company. And we’re all the better for it. Fascinating. 🎸🎸🔥
Well it’s more their personality’s mesh together really well; Sam is constantly drunk and just goes with the flow. While Herman likes to be in control of things.
@@RCKola281yeah it’s more like Herman handles the publicity and marketing while same would be fine with just being drunk all the time and playing guitar
Sam started his classical musical training at the age of 9. It does make a difference (not saying it makes a musician better over self-taught, just stating there is a difference). I have found self-taught are more versatile because they aren't regimented from training, they had to find stuff themselves and learn it themselves. Trained musicians have more technique and fluidity, and there are different schools of training. Jazz and classical are the two main schools of training that people generally choose from. Sam maintained one aspect of his classical training to this day, in one of his interviews (I think it was a print interview) he said that he still does all the exercises he learned. They serve as a warm-up pre-practice. This isn't to say all musicians who are self-taught don't do this and all musicians who are trained do this. I just wanted to clarify the training Sam had and to try to clarify a bit on the differences between self-taught and trained. For those of us who love Dragonforce and/or Sam, we don't really need or care about the clarification I just provided, but I just know a hater is going to pop up (so it's really for them before they say something stupid like "Sam can't really play guitar for shit").
@@KeltiKyrie About "I have found self-taught are more versatile" i don't agree at all, there probably isn't an absolute answer because there are a lot of exceptions, but i think all people that know their theory well can be more versatile and can jam over almost any song once they know it's chord progrssion, self taught will more likely get stuck in the same scale by choice (deciding to stop learning, be satisfied with what you already learned) or lack of interest, and people that actually made a course at least, or went to an actual music school will be taught much more and "forced" to learn it, again if the self taught is a hell of a person with dedication to learning the most he can, it's the same, as well if a person goes to school and doesn't make an effort to actually learn will also be likely to get stuck. I don't understand why is there a stigma that if you learn theory, specially by attending school you will compose and "compute" notes like a robot.
Li is fast and slightly surroundings with highly frequency like a wind Sam is balance not too hard and not too soft but perfect with passion make me deep in passions When both of them play together is absolutely and unique Two guys are perfectly matched up
They always had the skills that for sure, the thing is they used to play drunk "af" they admitted it, and that was people's first impressions there are some terrible live performances, you can hear the wrong notes, sloppy playing and so on, specially since they jump a lot on stage, being drunk didn´t help at all, and you know first impressions are hard to change.
skill? it's one thing to enjoy someone's music and another to say that Li is skilled when his playing is a sloppy mess with a narrow vocabulary, he is getting better nowadays though.
@@BassCommunion Herman plays better live than Sam usually. Sam is an excellent guitar player and I'm pretty he writes the majority of this stuff, but Herman is a better guitar player.
These two guys got sooo much better since we first heard of them. I admit I was one to bash them. But now I'll never do that, they did progress in 10 years
Nah dude. They were always this good. I saw them back in....2005 I think it was....and they were fantastic. Sam was drunk before the show even started and still played incredible. It's the haters who've grown, not these guys. They've always had the skills, the shit is just hard as fuck to play and even more so during an unpredictable live show. Especially with Herman's showmanship.
@@j800r_aswell They had good music back then for sure! But if you watch videos of Herman 10 years ago, like the one where he sweeps, he sounds like shit compared to what I hear from him today (I think he's way cleaner).
You look at live videos of this song when it first came out compared to now there's a world of difference. Their live playing has gotten so much better.
@@maximelepage5928 “sounds like shit” yet is still better than every guitarist you’d come across for the majority. Even Fred is a better guitarist than most guitarists. These guys have been professionals for 3 decades dude.
has Sam ever talked about his picking technique? because it looks like how Paul Gilbert would describe his picking technique that he used back in the Racer X days.
@@benhard8832 ZP was really great but marc is better in my opinion. In the studio, ZP was a god in but in live was worse. Marc can sing the songs in live as good as in the studio.
@@sensacionsombria5125 lol im a guitarist myself, if u say sam is a better songwriter i could agree with that, if u talk about guitar nope herman way better he knows more theory and guitar stuff than sam. have ever watch herman twitch stream? i bet u havent.. go watch now
@@sensacionsombria5125 being a classical guitarist or attends guitar school and stuff doesnt make u guitar god lmao, look up friedman.. andd how about sam classical trained vibrato? and is there any solos without pick tapping? not hating on sam but saying sam is better than herman on guitar is not that wise 😂 sam is the main songwriter of course hes important in the band but herman managing the band single handed is not easy at all.
Is Herman playing the normal Indonesian model. I can see Sam is playing a prestige but I can't tell about Herman's guitar. In one video Herman showed he had the cheap guitar on tour
