Given the treatment Dragonlance received in Shadow of the Dragon Queen... I'll be perfectly honest, I do NOT look forward to anyone other than Margaret Weis or Tracy Hickman touching the Majere twins. We know they weren't even consulted for SoDQ, so.... Nah. Just leave it be.

I got hit with this as a kid. After reading the Chronicles, I grabbed some of the non MW/TH books, without even looking at the author. I was wondering why it was so awful, then caught that they weren't written by MW/TH. At that time, being a kid, I didn't even know that franchises were allowed to do that. I thought if it was Dragonlance, it would have to be MW/TH. I then found the Legends trilogy, and was like DL is back!

I'm really not looking forward to it. Considering how the recent previous campaign settings were treated, like SpellJammer, I'm not confident that WotC wont screw up Dragonlance. Especially considering that they pretty much fired their entire writing staff.

They already screwed DL up with the adventure supplement. Each setting touched 5E has had a big, gooey steamer dropped on it. Why did we have to buy what...9 books for Forgotten Realms lore and half baked adventures, when we could have had one big setting book and 9 fully thought out and well written campaigns? The 50/50 approach to the books was absolutely a bad call. The one setting shown any real respect was Ravenloft, which don't get me wrong I thought the book was a good effort, but for real? The only setting? Spelljammer and Planescape were half hearted at best and particularly Planescape was a pale shadow compared to the 2E boxed set.

Hot take but the biggest news was that the Aasimar is in the PHB, its entered the big leagues. When a race makes the core PHB (PHB sequals like 3.5e and 4e PHB 2 don't count, only core PHBs count) it completely changes its status, how its viewed by the fandom, its place in the fiction and settings, so its a big deal for Goliaths, Orcs, Aasimar to make the big leagues.

I can't help but feel that the shift to Grewhawk is a TERRIBLE move. Greyhawk works well in the gritty, low magic adventure setting as supported by 1e and 2e even but 5e has more in common with Marvel Avengers then it ever will with anything "low magic". Also changing the spines, it might be a subtle change but they are practically saying that this is a new edition and that all previous books will be phased out. That you shouldn't use those "black" spined books!!!
@gyorgyor7765

@@gyorgyor7765 Still doesn't change the fact that it is stylistically mismatched with 5e or 5.5e etc etc. If they needed a setting for the DMG, spelljammer, planescape, or Eberron would have been far better choices to match the tone and style of the games we play. And all these have 5e sourcebooks.

there's no reason to do this except to make people spend more money on all new books, there's no big rules failure in 5e they need to correct. WotC did the same thing with Shadowrun, putting out new core books every few years just to get more money. ist's a cash grab ad nohing but
@quillogist2875
@quillogist2875 27 дней назад
It's been 10 years and there is a lot learned over that time. They are selling the core books for $10 less than the new PF2 Remastered books and the new books will have substantially more pages and content. Nothing will keep you from playing the 2014 5e at your table - unless you use DDB, where I think the 2014 books will become legacy content and harder to use over time.

Oh and was another reason to do these new core books, to fuck over the owners of D&D Beyond and give them a choice, either sell D&D Beyond to WotC or watch as the new Core Books make everything you licienced from WotC obsolete. Saying no would have wrecked D&D Beyond and its value, selling it to WotC get the formers owners a big check and Beyond survives and recieves investments.

@@quillogist2875 That's not true, the rules are essentially, pick a human, elf, or orc, and then pretend you're a half-orc or half-elf, there are no rules for actually mixing them besides just playing a half-race in name only. So yeah, race mixing is still racist to WOTC.
@victorl.4795

@@duckmanguy8575 It's as quillogist said, cut the crap. A bunch of upcoming and older rpgs do things this way. Also half-elf was beyond broken with the changes to ASIs post TCE, there's no reason to do it if you can simply choose which of your ancestries is more prevalent. Pick and choosing racial traits would also be cool, but it tends to create a bunch of min maxing tendencies in the game
@duckmanguy8575

@@victorl.4795 Half elves were never broken, they arent doing it for balancing, nobody has ever had a problem with half-elves except WOTC people and maybe you, theyre doing it because they dont like the idea of race mixing, they have retconed a half-elf character into a drow because they dont want half-elves to exist.

The twins…. Loved original Dragonlance setting, was disgusted at what they (WOTC) released recently. 5. 75 feats….. ok… if they are all different AND good, and offer customisation of your character like they did in 3/3.5 I’m all for it. 6. Grey red dragons…. What? More importantly.. why? Camouflage makes sense if they are hiding from something, or want to ambush something. But this is a MF red dragon. They are not subtle. Whites yes, greens and blacks maybe, blues unlikely. Reds never. 7. New spines…. Just go ahead and admit it…. It’s 6th edition. 8. Bastions….. ok that’s actually a nice new idea. A way to keep adventures low key and local for the DMs. Also useful for filler one shots for when half the group don’t turn up for the session. 9. I'm a 90's baby and didn't get into D&D until 5th edition via Critical Role. So references to the 80's cartoon, Dragonlance and Greyhawk all mean little to nothing to me. Honestly I'm a bit annoyed with their existence if only because I was hoping they would walk away from all of this old material and try something new for people to learn about and develop together. I can't bring myself to care about old settings or nostalgia bait when I'm over here fiending for new material and ideas
@chuckwilson980
@chuckwilson980 Месяц назад
But if you aren't familiar with these settings, it's all new to you, right? So does it really matter? WotC has LOTS of settings for you to choose from, including several MtG worlds. The Radiant Citadel sketched some new worlds. I'm sure they'll do some more new stuff before long. But this is the 50th anniversary! Yes, they're going hard at nostalgia. But every edition has dug into the game's history to put new spins on classic adventures, artifacts, and characters. Grabs long-time fans and hopefully some new ones, too. You may be surprised and see something you'll like.
@misterfevillord1588

But you can say the same about the Lord of the rings. Those were old books. But Peter Jackson told the stories in movies for everyone, including new generations. Perhaps the old cartoon is not for you, that is fine. But maybe the new stories can be for you. Look at baldurs gate 3. You don't need to play the previous games to enjoy it.

@nojusticenetwork9309 Месяц назад
@@chuckwilson980 I know myself and I've been playing this game and observing the community for close to 8 years now. I straight up do not care about any of this old material. I was aware of some of these things, like Dragonlance either through osmosis or simply because these things happen to be IP's in spheres of my general media interests. Just like back then I do not care for them. I even tried Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen and the parts I did not like were directly related to this old material. I simply do not enjoy old D&D and I do not particularly care for the old heads who eat up that material either because they don't give space for new things.
@nojusticenetwork9309
@nojusticenetwork9309 Месяц назад
@@misterfevillord1588 While I enjoyed the LotR movies, I do not view them as peak fiction like many fans do. I read the books as an assignment back in school and found them dry and wordy. It doesn't matter what decade or era the material comes from, if I do not like the material and the elements involved I will not like it no matter how you remix it. The 80's cartoon did not appeal to me then it will not appeal to me now. While I enjoyed BG3, my experience is soured by the fact I do not like the Forgotten Realms setting, especially the Sword's Coast. The same applies to the old games too. Have I played in that setting? Many times at this point. I know a fair bit of it's lore out of necessity as a player and a GM and that knowledge makes me dislike it more. THAT'S why I want new material that isn't tied to D&D's history or settings introduced in previous editions. New material means that writers and designers actually have the freedom to explore new ideas without the chains of previous lore holding them back and they don't HAVE to appeal to older fans. Even if that new thing doesn't directly appeal to me I would appreciate the fact that it exists.
@chuckwilson980
@chuckwilson980 Месяц назад
@@nojusticenetwork9309 Fair enough. I worried you were just dismissing things BECAUSE they were old without at least trying them. But if you've sampled and don't care for them, that's a different story. Everyone's taste is different; that doesn't make you wrong. The good news is that new materials are coming out all the time from companies like Kobold Press, Monte Cook Games, MCDM, and Ghostfire Gaming; I hope you find some things that hit your sweet spot. Peace out!
