Reviewing the second of the Drakan games, Drakan: The Ancients' Gates for the Play Station 2. Is the PS2 Skyrim, doped up human, nipple ringed dragon fest worth a revisit? lest find out!
Hope you enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. I've thought reviewing Gmod servers could be funny af and a good way of getting the discord involved so thats a good one Meks. And i've wanted to do Fable 3 Raisin as its the let down of the 3. I never finished Hollow Knight and never played Beyond Good and Evil but always heard good things so both of those would be sick :D

I grew up playing Drakan, it was (is) one of my favourite games, and last year I discovered Skyrim and realized that this is Drakan but expanded and maybe even better. I wish they would remake Drakan. I miss Arokh.

As someone who played skyrim before playing this game, which I am now for the first time playing (And immensely enjoying), Skyrim is an amazing game, but also very dull in lots of ways. The Music is too drony and gets repetitive and tiresome, the annoying character remarks get on my nerves, and also the random dragon village attacks every minute. I know im rambling but one last major point, the combat system in skyrim is far too simple. This game at least allows you to swing your sword in every direction, and even though the spell system is ghetto, all in all the weapon tier system in this game and leveling is much more satisfying due to the work and also perfect limiting in money and amount of items you can have in the game. Limits aren't always bad infact thats what can make a game feel so unique and special if done right. Not saying Draken is a better game by any means, all im saying is that what they did, they did absolutely perfectly. Whereas skyrim they could have done a lot better in certain places like the combat and interactions etc. Obviously they are both different games from different eras.

@50zezima I always preferred Morrowind, and Oblivion over Skyrim. Especially Morrowind though. Always felt like Skyrim was Bethesda really going full mainstream, and dumbing down alot of what made Morrowind GOTY worthy. This game was in a league of it's own, imo. It's a fantasy, action adventure, open world with a dragon you can use free roaming the map. This game got slept on in the midst of the GTA3 clone hurdle everybody was doing. I really don't understand the reviewer crapping on the tank controls when everybody hugs resident evil 1-3's nuts, and the tank controls there are way worse. At least here the character can vault around quickly like Lara croft. The combat is a little lacking but considering the content, and exploration the game has for you, a simplistic combat system isn't too awful. It feels good, there's timing, and I love that the game laughs at infinity frames unlike dark souls. Killing a popular trend before it was thought of as something players expect going into games is a breathe of fresh air, imo. The weapons are fun, the air combat is dizzying fun, and the fact that you can BBQ an enemy camp from the back of your dragon just sells the whole premise, for me.

Ever since Microsoft bought out Activision-Blizzard a couple days ago, I've been thinking about older games that Sony could revive in order to help keep pace. Drakan is the first thing that came to mind. There is no question that the game's execution technically could have been better, as with the movement and magic system. But the game is very good on a conceptual level - the idea of having a mage cast spells by performing hand gestures that you have to control is a pretty interesting idea. Having the game give you two player avatars that are linked together is pretty novel. The sense I got from Drakan was like a fantasy apocalypse with the Desert Lords using the monstrous races to exterminate humanity, which was a really neat way to frame the story. So yeah I think that Drakan is a game that could easily be remade. Ditch some of the obtuse mechanics like how the characters handle movement, give everything the graphical upgrade, and execute these unique concepts better in a modern way and I think I'd play the hell out of that game.

I remember this game was one of the first games we got when my parents decided they wanted our family to have a ps2. This game was freaking amazing. It was the first "open world" game ever. I remember finding a random cave in the far corner of the world fighting through it for 30 minutes and then finding a chest with a "magic sword" in it. It was so rewarding. It was like crack for my preteen brain

I haven't seen anyone talk about this game in YEARS! Played it when I was a kid, I can hear all the sound effects still! Definitely one of the best early open world games I've ever played. There was a game called Drakan: The Ancients' Gates. It was totally awesome! I thought it had excellent graphics. There is a young female human named Rynn, and a dragon named Arokh. When the game starts Rynn and Arokh has just returned home to her Village. There is smoke everywhere. The entire Village has been destroyed by fire. It looks like everyone is dead. The dragon Arokh shows up after scouting around. Arokh says he hears and feels a calling. The words he hasn't heard in over 600 years. It is the Grand Summons of the Order. That he must answer it. Arokh wants Rynn to go with him. She says she can't. Not yet. She has to stay behind and bury her friends, but after 2 days she will leave to join him. An evil race of three-faced beings known as the Desert Lords has begun rallying the monsters from around the world, and have begun enslaving humans. - Around the world, there exist four gateways that lead to the world where the dragon mother, Mala-Shae, and her brood have been slumbering since the Dark Wars. Only a Dragon of the Elder Breed can open the gates, and this is why Rynn and Arokh (more specifically, Arokh) are needed to open these gates, so that the humans can once again bond with dragons and fight back against the Desert Lords. Along the way, the two of them must go on various side quests to accomplish goals leading them to the ultimate goal. Arokh doesn't just breathe fire. He has a ice breath and other powers as well. I would set Arokh for fire breathing, and park him right in front of a cave, facing it. I would dismount Arokh and go inside the cave and stir up the bad guys to get them to chase me and I would run right straight out of the mouth of the cave where Arokh was setting. Arokh would destroy all of them with his fire breath. This was a hell of a lot of fun!

I bought this when it was new. I saw the pictures on the case and read the description. I like that type of stuff, so I bought it. I took it home and tried it out. Only played for about 15 minutes. I did the tutorial bit and fought the first 3 guys on the pass. The controls were bad. What a piece of crap. I wasted money on it........Then about 3 months later, I figured, "What the heck, I'll give 'er another chance." Wow, was I glad that I did. I played through this game about 7 times. Each time I would find new stuff. And it isn't just knowing where everything is either. Did you know that a chicken randomly pops up in a certain towns weapon shop and that it's one of the most powerful weapons in the game. When you use it, it squawks and such when you attack with it. It looks like you have your hand up its rear when using it...... It's kinda funny that I had to beat it a few times before I really got the hang of the controls. Once I did, it got even more fun. The first couple of times through, I would rely mostly on distance fighting with bows and magic. Later on I would head in for close combat. There were many gems about this game that even are nice today. Like dead bodies never disappeared, unless of course you used that one obliterate spell with the dragon. This game did not get the recognition that it should have. It was a masterpiece for its time. I wish that there were more games like this today. Maybe there are, they're just hidden in the sea of sh!t that the gaming industry has become.

The PC prequel aged a lot better. Part of it is that controlling Arokh with a mouse feels almost like cheating after using the clunky PS2 controls. Also, it's shorter, which actually works in its favour: less padding.

very rarely a chicken will cluck when you enter any shop in the game. scroll allllll the way to end of the shop when you hear that cluck and you'll find one of the best weapons in the game and its a chicken. you can beat your enemies down with a chicken you hold by its feet. I played this game a couple dozen times and only got it twice, and you can't come back for it you must buy it then.

This is still to date the best Dragon riding adventure game out there. there's a couple more games where you fly on a dragon or have dragoon and ground combat but none of them allow you to go on a proper Western RPG style Jank venture where you slowly nudge around edges of boxes to figure out where the hitboxes to snipe enemies with a bow while they spin around their axis confused or destroy the difficulty with fear slow time and invisibility or get to hard to reach places on the dragon and bait enemies into flying in a straight line towards you so you can barrage them with slow projectiles. Small correction on melee combat: you can use the d-pad to insert commands before you execute attacks, like: up down attack, down down attack, left left/right tight attack and they will allow you to execute more powerful attacks with high stagger chance adding for much needed variety in combat. For anyone wanting to play this be weary that max level is only 12 and there's no way to reselect distributed skillpoints. While on that I absolutely recommend going with a magic build since Melee, doesn't actually increase damage you do just lets you equip higher level weapons and the ultimate melee weapon (which you get from the blacksmith for bringing him all elemental weapons) only requires lv 1 skill in melee. Archery is decent since the ultimate bow DOES require maxed archery and that weapon has guided arrows however magic still outclasses archery quite hard. In any scenario get magic to lv 4 at least cause that unlocks heal spell and lets you learn the second level of fireball which is a huge upgrade over base level and can easily ruin most enemies. it's very important for the last dungeon as it's full of golems which take forever to kill and can instadib you if they get close.

A western 'style', third person, action RPG with dragons would be Divinity 2 Ego Draconis. I don't think I'd call this an RPG and for those that would I don't think it's really a 'western' style one. Not everything that isn't a JRPG is a Western RPG. Though Drakan does have a fixed protagonist and fixed, linear plot & questlines told entirely through non interactive cutscenes with no input from the player at all and it's plot revolves around 'four portals' that need to be opened among other typical JRPG tropes. If you look at the original Drakan. It was kind of a stage or scenario based action game. This sequel took all those same elements in implemented them into a seamless open world and added some Diablo like hack'n slash looting and progression.
@nikodem123asdf
@nikodem123asdf 2 года назад
@@7dayspking it has that feel of a young adult fantasy novel. But yeah you do have a point. This game doesn't really go too far into either action RPG, platforming, open world or air combat to really classify it specifically as one genre but rather a "we'll take just enough of this and that to make our own lil monster". Comparing it to jRPG is a little bit far off aside from maybe the 4 maguffins of power plot. The game will never prevent you from screwing yourself over and grinding is pretty much never the solution to winning (cause grinding really isn't even a thing in this game). I'd actually like to check out some of the divinity games, I really liked the original sin games but those didn't really have dragons in them
@7dayspking
@7dayspking 2 года назад
@@nikodem123asdf Divinity 2 the Dragon knight saga allows you to transform into a dragon. There's more JRPG connections but to repeat you have a fixed and voiced protagonist and a linear storyline. 'Western rpgs' even the ones that aren't true role playing games and whether or not they allow players to affect the plot have still traditionally offered interactive dialogue. Even Diablo! They also typically have players to create a custom character, if not an entire party of 8 characters. The main exceptions are Euro RPGs, which often have fixed and voiced protagonists for some reason. Though most still have interactive dialogue. Interestingly Larian who make the Divinity games are European but design their games more like American studios.
@nikodem123asdf
@nikodem123asdf 2 года назад
@@7dayspking Yeah I was thinking more in context of what a euro RPG is like, where you go on a solo adventure and have some dude or girl dressed in rat cloth and armed with a blunt stick taking on gigantic rats in the sewers. Tho as you said even the likes of Witcher 1 and Gothic generally let you influence the story in some way, the only extension of that in drakan is that a huge portion of dungeons in the game are optional (despite having more or less the same amount of effort put into them as the required caves).
@jamesbyrd5175
@jamesbyrd5175 2 года назад
@@nikodem123asdf What other western beat giant rats with stick style fantasy games are there that are old, not turn based of course. I know about Gothic but is that it. I was having flashbacks to this when Skyrim was blowing up and I thought I'd already see this genre a decade ago and no one cared.

hey,, thumbs up for the hot red head and the butt smacking action! However, don't put the word 'thicc' besides a GUYS butt!!! Ever! What the heck man, are we going for 50/50 here? The women aren't playing fair, so why should we? Props to the developers though, they really know how to sell a video game, she needs some more midriff and some affectionate npc interaction capability, but this is the kind of game that I would buy now that I'm older and women are even more attractive than they used to be.
