@@CABROWN I've played a few fan games like this, but I was almost surprised not to see The Lecarde Chronicles 2 on this list, an absolutely fantastic Castlevania fan game. I've not played the first one so I can't vouch for it, but I strongly recommend checking it out.
Thank you for the shout out, it's greatly appreciated. We do our best to try to bring people the classic mega man experience we all know and love with some tweaks for things broken or under-powered. Being a maker style game which is continuously updating things always can happen and we do try to resolve them in a timely manner. There are plenty of Mega Man fan games out there also, so take some time to explore them and have fun with the blue bomber!
I mean, if i made a game and people made fangames from it, i would honestly hate it, if the creator is fine with it, it's fine, but i don't like the concept of you grabbing a creation you don't own and modifying without the creator's permission
@@lopeo2324 honestly, back in the early 2010s, there used to be so many megaman fans that made games because capcom wouldn't do it themselves. Yeah, there's probably something to not like out of this scenario, but megaman, at least, wasn't getting new content; the fans watched their favorite series die out and all the original creators leave Capcom. Some of those creators even tried to make a new megaman-like ip. So the fangames ended up being an excuse for the community to come together and keep this franchise alive
I'm pretty sure I remember playing English translations back in the day, though I could be misremembering. On the other hand, they've been out so long that I'd be surprised if they still had gone untranslated until now. I'm sure someone somewhere has done it. I completely agree, though. They're extremely faithful recreations that are worth checking out.
Imagine being a Gamer, then imagine being a Fan, then imagine being a Modder, then imagine being a Retro Modder, then imagine the Management of Modding a retro game, then imagine the Time and Efforts. Then imagine the Payment which is 0 ofc.
another banger you could add to the list is Super Mario RPG: Armageddon. 10/10 unofficial game that adds a mountain of content to expand the game, rather than change it.
Final Fantasy Renaissance. Adds a bunch of new classes, some new content, new mechanics, some QOL updated, achievements.. absolutely worth looking for.
On the rom hack side, Final Fantasy Randomizer is an NES compatible way to play a more modern ff1. It's primarily a randomizer (duh) but it's hugely customizable, and you can fully turn off the randomization for just an updated vanilla experience.
Great round up here. But you forgot Zelda 2 PC enhanced edition. It expands the world and adds lots of cool features. Also AM2R is a legendary Metroid fan game.
Discovered your channel yesterday, and OH MY GOD I'M IN LOVE. As a huge fan of obscure video games and fan games, this is like an obscure game fan's dream come true. Thank you for shining a light on lesser known projects so that those like me can find more hidden gems that strike our fancy!
Final Fantasy Renaissance built in unity, Zelda 2 remastered built-in game maker, Zelda Doom which is the first Zelda game put in Doom and Dragon Quest plus! Those alone are incredibly awesome
Pleasantly surprised this video didn’t just cover the obvious examples like AM2R, Undertale Yellow, Sonic Roboblast 2, etc. I haven’t heard of most of these and definitely intend to try some out.
@@jude4581 I mean it's one if not the best mega man fan games if not fan games in general. Its basically if mega man was a fps game. It was also made in the same engine as sonic roboblast 2.
@@Josuh you should! it's very fun. the guy who made it also made a bunch of other fangames, like one where you play as toad ... but they're pretty janky because those were made much earlier. still fun tho.
@@1gnore_me. Yeah I downloaded it shortly after making that comment but didn't make it that far in, what's crazy to me is that it's made in Clickteam Studio so you know this is OLD old, still could though, like the mechanics
If you like Mega Man Maker, check out the Make a Good Mega Man Level games! They used a different engine (though the Megamix Engine is also freely available), and a number of entrants into the contests didn’t exactly succeed at making a good Mega Man level but those games have so much good content. Oh, although Episode Zero wasn’t a contest.
I get that the vibe of this video is retro games, but I just wanted to mention the absurd amount of great Touhou fan games there are. Games like Luna Night, Mystia's Izakaya, and Genso Wanderer really show how much a fanbase can do when the series creator gives them full autonomy.
I remember playing one called Mega Man Revolution, it was a well developed game with original robot masters, a decent story, and a good soundtrack. The only gripe I had with it was having to play it half screen since you couldn’t exit back to the main menu if you had it set to full screen
Fanmade games are really excellent. Gotta mention Mega Man Unlimited 1(and 2 is upcoming) and Mega Man: Rock & Roll as some of the very best ones that could do with some attention. You definitely can make some more videos on these games though. Gonna add a few more: -Mother 3 fan translation. The most ambitious fan translated game that makes it ridiculous why some company Nintendidn't do it themselves. -Darkwing Duck Advanced. Fixed a lot of the original's issues and added more fun things -Ancient Magic fan translation. A game ahead of its time, but regionlocked for ages. -TMNT Rescue Palooza. Let's just say there's a lot of playable characters once you rescue them -Seiken Densetsu 3 fan translation. There's a reason why Trials of Mana was made, this fan translation grew the fanbase.
EARTHBOUND HALLOW'S END!! If you're an Earthbound fan who's played the game so many times you could beat it with your eyes closed, you HAVE to check out Hallow's End (especially if you also enjoy Mother 1). It can be a bit grindy but the party is a wonderfully balanced little group of three, and the dungeons and bosses will REALLY test your mettle if you think you're "good at EB" while still being totally fair if you make sure you're prepared and you remember to buff. And it's all wrapped up in a genuinely well put together little microwave meal of a story LOL I genuinely can't believe it was made for a game jam-- I wish it was possible to contact the creator, haha
Mother: Cognitive Dissonance is my favorite game in the Mother/Earthbound series and it's just a fan game made in RPGMaker. I can't get enough of it. If you're interested check out the 2.XX version, which hilariously enough is an unofficial fan made version of an unofficial fan game. It's inception 🤯
I saw the hero from Legend of Princess and immediately clicked. I LOVE that game and played it when it was still new. The creator also made Noitu Love 1 & 2. Wonderful library of games and little demos. Love it!
I knew about Simon's destiny for a long time and it's freakin' amazing to play and really widens your mind seeing everything throw Simon's eyes and extremely good!
Pokemon: Fool's Gold is really excellent, it's a reimagining of Pokemon Crystal with redesigned versions of every gen 1 and 2 Pokemon with new types, it's a really fresh way to play through games I'm so nostalgic for
This is an incredible look at a few unofficial games. I hope you do a video about some other aspects of unofficial games, like randomizers, or "Character in game they're not supposed to be in" mods, which have gotten popular lately
I've played a few fan games like this, but I was almost surprised not to see The Lecarde Chronicles 2 on this list, an absolutely fantastic Castlevania fan game. I've not played the first one so I can't vouch for it, but I strongly recommend checking it out.
To anyone who likes the Megaman Battle Network games, Shanghai EXE is a fully fledged new battle network game that takes its character and enemy designs from the Touhou series. It combines mechanics from all over the Battle Network games and pulls it off better than most of the official titles, I can't recommend it enough.
Fan games/rom hacks are simply my favorite branch of gaming niche. I especially love when I can throw a game on an everdrive and play on the original console. Def wasn't familiar with many of these good vid!
Excellent video! Also another very cool thing about at least some of these games mentioned is that U can play these games on hardware like a modified Wii' U surely can Game on!
A few quality fangames that come to my mind are Undertale Yellow, Sonic Triple Trouble 16bit and Plants Vs Zombies 2 Reflourished. All great "unofficial games" that could surpass the original games.
Wow! Great list! I never knew these games existed. I hope Konami, Capcom, Nintendo, etc... would give these fan-made games a chance. Just for once they would make one of these games official and see how it will take off. It will definitely be history in the making for the gaming industry.
Turns out I'm part of that sub-sub-sub niche, so a higher proportion of these were familiar to me than your normal videos. Still, a few interesting things you brought to my attention to check out! I'm a bit surprised there was zero mention of Zelda Classic or any of the high-quality projects that have come out of it, though that's such a thing it could be a video all on its own. If you haven't heard of it, it's essentially a game design engine built on, well, initially Zelda 1, but now more like the entire 2D part of the series and then some. And there's a sizable community of people who have been making content for it for probably about a decade by now, some of which is incredibly good.
Zelda Classic is actually much older than that (I have a video of a game that can almost vote). And I support your statement: There are many extremely good games on there.
I will contribute "The Sealed Palace" (3D Zelda) and "Jiggies of Time" (Banjo-Kazooie) as games that may as well be official entries in their respective franchises. And AM2R of course.
The people who made the Deadpool hack, also made a Contra Deadpool hack, if you prefer Deadpool to be guns-blazing. It's called Deadpool Special Mission.
I can't believe you didn't mention super Mario 63. I found more enjoyment out of it than any of the official Mario games I've played (smw is a pretty close second tho)
I never understood the point of releasing virus laced games online unless it was the developers themselves doing it out of spite saying "to hell with the law...." knowing there was virtually no chance of them ever getting caught or in any trouble. Reasons why I sandbox everything and run an alternative OS.
Celeste Mario's Zap & Dash has been my favorite "unofficial game" . There are things in this Rom that makes you question the real limitations of the Nes
Examples: the Super Mario World Hacks (re: Luigi’s Adventure OSE, The Second Reality Project 1 & 2 Reloaded, the New Super Mario World series by Pink Gold Peach formerly known as G. D. and BullyMario respectively, the A Super Mario Adventure trilogy, the Mario Must Die trilogy, Mario Gives Up which is another trilogy, Super Mario Omega, Super Mario 2+3: The Essence Star, Mario’s Mystery Meat because of course, A Plumber for All Seasons, the sequels to The 6th Annual Vanilla Level Design Contest, the Classic Mario World trilogy, other hacks by Crash Bandicoot, and yes, he made Mario fan games, the hacks by Gamma V, Mario’s Journey Through Time and Space, Truc Bidule, The Big Boo’s Legion which would be good for the line “Oh damn it!” being a future meme, the Sicari series, The 7 Golden Statues, the Grand Poo World trilogy, Super Mario Horizons, Super Mario Universe, other hacks by Hendog20, Super Mario in Yoshi’s Revenge, Bowser Rampages Again, other custom Kaizo hacks and future hacks I’d love to create like Hold Left to Win, sequels to Luigi’s Adventure OSE: The Lost Levels besides Luigi’s Adventure 3 OSE, etc).
Gosh I must have played Zelda Parallel Worlds 10-15 years ago, and it was one of the few overhauling hacks I played. When I was really into emulation there were a lot of hacks I didn't see much in the way of whole games made in the engine of existing NES / SNES games. It's great to see people have continued hacking roms and have progressed so far with it!
It's unfortunate that the best Fan Games tend to be based on games by Nintendo who are also the most strict when it comes to fan games. All the more of a reason to support these amazing devs. It also shows how great Nintendo games are for inspiring great devs.
Legend of Princess and ZeldaClassic are great. ZClassic has _so many_ user-developed quests with their own plot, dungeons, sprites, etc. I always thought it was pretty awesome how people were creative enough to make Mega Man or Metroid "quests" that still kinda worked within the Zelda framework.
You are absolutely on point with the intro. These games are very niche and still awesome. Did you have to research these? or are these games something you're passionate of?
B3313 is one i think deserves more attention than it gets. 460 stars hidden within an ever-changing castle full of jumpscares, reimplemented beta elements, and hidden lore that would give Matpat an aneurism. Also check out the director's music cause its actually really good, and many of the area designers and programmers have their own rom hacks or youtube series that overlap with it
Someone took my shout out to FF Renaissance, so I'll shout out a set of fan games similar to one in here -- the Make a Good Mega Man Level titles. (three main, an episode Zero, and a 24hr and 48hr stage set)
@@shenglongisback4688 You know, I looked up "Ruff Ryder Anthem" to double check I had the right song, however, those two songs use very similar riffs. I agree that "X Gon' Give It To Ya" does sound a little closer to the game.
I wonder why companies don't hire those people to make game sequels or spin-offs. Well, I admit that they already hired developers and there would be a conflict with the contracts, and famous names that the fans prefer to unknown indie developers although they can be excellent in their job.
retro games arent really my big thing, but UNDERTALE/Deltarune fangame community has /tons/ of cool stuff. UNDERTALE YELLOW is just... more Undertale. Instead following the seventh out of eighth human to fall into the ground. It's very good! TS!Underswap is a work in progress fangame based on Underswap, an Undertale AU. It has A TON of polish, and generally is a fresh redo of Undertale, and its first two sections are out and playable in ALL routes. Deltatraveler is a fangame taking three of the up and coming primary characters from Deltarune: Kris, Susie and Noelle and putting them in various worlds. While I find some of the plot stuff, especially on one route kind of... flawed, it is still overall a fun fangame! PS!Outertale is like TS!Underswap in that its a fangame of an Undertale AU, but this time for Outertale, which I'm pretty sure is just Undertale in space. It is fully released, and overall its really fun, even if it IS somewhat flawed. Deltarune: Master Mode is a work in progress mod that makes Deltarune... harder. I liked it, it refreshed a playthrough through the first chapter. I believe that Chapter 2 is a work in progress, though. Continuing the train of Deltarune mods, there are two that add "weird routes" (aka genocide routes) to chapter 1 of Deltarune. One adds Noelle to Chapter One's Dark World. Normally Noelle is locked to chapter 2, but the mod allows you to have her in chapter 1, which allows for some... /weird/ stuff. Another adds a fan-concept route into Deltarune, being the DEVILSBUSTER route for chapter 1. Its also really good. Being vague about these two because they have a lot of story stuff. Finally, Ribbit is a Deltarune mod and is a full scale hard mode mod telling a whole new story with a unique cast of characters. From personal experience, its REALLY fun from someone who has played Deltarune's Chapter 1 and 2 to death. It's a complete mod of Chapter 1, being a nice lighthearted joke mod with a fun challange and absolutely nothing going on beneath. I was intending on having like a few lines for decent fan games but now I've just made a list....
We really needed more good games back then. NES should have had two overhead Zelda games. For that matter the SNES should have had two overhead Zelda games. And each system should have had two Metroids. For that matter America should really have had all the Final Fantasy's.
@@CoralCopperHead nothing wrong with that. Think of it like a store that doesn't sell what you're looking for, and you wish they did because it's the closest one to your house without having to drive to another town for it. Safeway doesn't sell YooHoo drinks, for example, and I don't want to drive all the way to Walmart to get it, so I wish Safeway would just stock it there even though they wont.
While this is absolutely a fantastic collection of fan games / hacks. And I know the series isn’t for everyone. The Fire Emblem series has some of my favorite fan works / games / rom hacks for people who are super into the series and want to see the gameplay or stories that explore completely new territory. There’s even an event that’s been going on the past few years called FEE3 that shows off a good chunk of the really good ones that are finished / in development. Would highly recommend checking it out.
Pokemon crystal clear should’ve been on here. It’s the definitive gen 2 experience and comes close in quality to some of the best official pokemon games.
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit, Sonic Before the Sequel, Sonic After the Sequel, and Sonic and the Fallen Star are must-plays as far as unofficial Sonic games go
Great to see this stuff. I think our gaming future is going to be more and more about returning to the past. I just finished watching a video about how car games have become less fun the more realistic they make them. I long so badly for a new numbered Burnout game!
