He always copying stealing and indeed making them HOT songs . He raps, then doing Rnb or combining them both . He got an identity problem not black n white but cultural and rap or RnB . It’s absolute fine for RnB to work with each other giving lyrics and sounds because they do it all the time . Drake just has to decide what he is .

I don’t think it’s stealing cultures or sounds when he always shouts out the culture or helps make the sound known and he usually gives credit where it’s due. Like we wouldn’t have the Afro beat and UK drill craze we went through without albums like more life and some songs on views. When both parties benefit I don’t think it’s stealing but that’s just me

If you want to have writers, go for it. Great songs can come from a team of writers. Rappers have been doing it since the beginning. Biz Markie did it. Dr. Dre did it. Diddy. Ye. Just don’t expect to be on a list of lyricists and definitely expect to be penalized in a greatest rappers list. Singers can have writers and not be penalized in the same way because that has never been part of how we measure singers and we recognize the difference between singing and rapping.

I agree with you that’s it’s especially important to write your own raps. I think one of the things that made Drake so appealing early on was how personal to him he made his music sound. After the Quentin Miller, I think we gave him a pass because of what he did with back to back but as more reference tracks come out, I’m starting to find myself not enjoying some of the older Drake classic songs at this point because I question if it came from him. It doesn’t mean that the songs aren’t good it just takes away because of how personal his music is.

I just listen to the music and whatever I like I continue to listen to and whatever I don’t like I stop listening to. The issue with those who value the standards of hip hop is Drake refers to himself as an MC. IMO he can’t be in that convo. The only reason he is because of his stats as a POP artist. It’s understandable that some are irritated but it doesn’t change anything because his fans and the masses will continue to support him regardless. 3. If anybody needs to take accountability it’s all his peers and elders who still embraced him after the Quentin Miller reference tracks were released. Gatekeepers should’ve checked that but they didn’t because they wanted to play industry games and politics! 4. As you said fans are fickle. The man knows how to create hits. Once he does, the world will move on and it’ll be business as usual. 5. If I ever hear reference track for timestamp Drake, I might shed a thug tear.

I think a point that people are overlooking is these "credited writers" all are established artists with their own cultivated fanbases but they have probably have been sold under the guise of writing for Drake is the biggest thing they will ever do. Meanwhile Drake is one of the biggest worldwide artist propped up by artists who have had career lulls and no classic records. A lot of people argue that Drake has helped lots of artists (and he has), but somebody else could be in that top 3 if he wasn't getting references. And I'm saying this thinking there's definitely others on bigger songs hidden in a vault somewhere.

As a hip hop head, writing your own bars is essential and how Hip hop should live but we know in this day and age the best outcome has a price/bottom line for the corporations. Also, some of the consumers of hip hop don’t care who writes what just as long as their favorite is performing the song.

It is refreshing to hear an MC like you tell the truth and not be called a 'hater' like they tried to call Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) or anyone else who states, yes Drake is a great artist but not a pure rapper MC. I am an MC out of Detroit/Pontiac, Ill Will (the battle rapper) is in my camp (6 Deep), I never made it to the heights of even Ill Will especially Drake but the truth is the truth, I don't or never have considered Drake a true rapper or MC. Irt is not hating it is just the facts of the matter if you ever put pen to pad as a rap purest. I was rapping since 12 years old, seeing it curated and growing up different I think we see rap different then most of todays fans. I left rap alone from 2005 to 2015 because of the direction I saw it going. Kendrick Lamar actually brought me back. I heard Swiming Pools by mistake (I was listening to strictky gospel by then, a different story) right before to Pimp a Butterfly came out. I coped to Pimp a Butterfly and played it two weeks staright, that is all I listened too and found my passion for rap again. For the rap fan, more power to you but for a true MC you have to put pen to pad, build your own cadance, hear and understand the beat, create. That is true art from a true artist. When Kendrick Lamar mentioned Raphel, I thought of the painter. I studied art, Raphel became one of the premiere portait artist. Two artist cannot create one portrait.

He never has been, if you look at drake in the same light as Michael Jackson this stuff won’t bother you. He’s a hit maker, and the number 1 hit maker of our era. He doesn’t set trends, he adapts to them and then makes the best songs for whichever sound is currently trendy. This is not what Kendrick does at all. Kendrick sets trends, creates new sounds, and takes risk. They’re different things and both great at what they do.

there are a lot of parallels to this situation with Drake (ghostwriters, collaborative songwriting, both) and steroids in baseball. we know steroids doesn't change your ability to hit, the same way we know Drake having writers doesn't change his talent/ability to be successful without it. the allegations for both does muddy the waters because now we have to ask what did "this" impact and how much? there's no way of knowing how many HRs Bonds would have without steroids, just like there's no way of knowing what Drake's career, longevity and reputation looks like without help - whenever he used it. both Drake and Bonds are still "Hall of Famers" but to act as if it isn't part of either person's story is ridiculous. Drake probably went this route the same reason Bonds started roids: pressure. Drake is essentially in a MLM, he has money to recoup on record deals and many others mouths touch money off his work before it trickles down to him. so the result is being on the road 360 days out of the year and putting out this crazy output of work. Just as Bonds felt the pressure to be out on the field and to produce to live up to his contract or work towards another one.

I wrote this on another video, but here goes again: When the rapper is representing themselves as an Individual, a Solo MC, I fully agree with you. I don't want to hear other people's pen when I'm listening to a Solo artist in hip hop. My only caveat is that there's an exception where I do think it's okay - Groups. To take it back to the old days, when we were talking about G-Unit or D12, the stuff Drake's doing would've been fine. If Drake doesn't want to write his own raps, then to me he shouldn't be a solo artist. OVO should make a group. A "band" of rappers. If you make an OVO group where a lot of their label raps on songs, then who writes what exactly stops mattering. The group as a whole gets the credit. It's about the Group's music.

@@RobMarkman Hey man, thanks for the reply! I'm not gonna say the idea is flawless or anything, or solves everything. But it just struck me that a lot of the accusations about OVO being a sweatshop for Drake (the solo artist) wouldn't have been so incisive if they did a group thing. I think there's a lot of nuanced particulars to be discussed, but the main thing for me is that they have a ton of great artists on the label that frankly don't see no love from the label, and I don't think that would be the same if OVO had their own rap group. I'm being rambly, but yeah, I just personally wish OVO didn't just exist for Drake, but that they'd give opportunities to prop up the whole label and all their artists.

I’ve loved Drake’s music since 2010-2011 so it lowkey does sting to know he didn’t organically come up with tracks such as Over My Dead Body or Look What You’ve Done because to 10th grade me, I felt like those song were a time stamp to where I was in my life. Same thing I can say about Money Trees/Tammy’s song(even tho this song came out) about K Dot. This is a very conflicting topic for me. As much as I love lyricism, sometimes the voice delivering these lyrics carries more weight than who wrote it. These songs will never be heard by mos, if it stayed in a Vory or Quentin tape. So I’m grateful to hear their hard work gets heard, but I hate that it’s not gonna be as big without a Drake voice to it. Maybe I should be grateful he delivered these songs perfectly and the writer and artiste get paid regardless Or I should stay myopic on one point he didn’t write it.

You’re right. Drake performs the records in an incredible way and brings em to life. Thats undeniable.
