The seventh video in a series photographing the Drakensberg Escarpment of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
On our seventh day we hike from Pyramid and Column to Organ Pipes via Cleft Peak.
I guided this trip for five photography friends, all of whom are independent photographers and hikers so I was able to find time to talk to camera.
I regularly run workshops in the Drakensberg for adventurous photographers. If you'd like to join in 2021 then send me a message or get on my mailing list!

Can't tell you how much this makes me miss these mountains; up Organ Pipes and over Cleft Peak is one of my favourite routes. Great set of images Alex, and thanks for taking the time to film these trips and editing the recap videos.

This one was spectacular. !! We arrived for a 10 day visit to the Drakensberg on the 8th of July. Stayed in Drakensville. We had STORM GUSTS down in the camp that night and through the morning. Up to 62kmh. We were properly tested in our tents. The moon, Mars and Venus were awesome to see!!

Love your work, and yet another beautifully presented video. You said, "The foregrounds can feel detached from the background". Thinking out loud here, would not using focus stacking mean that the foreground pulls the eye slightly less, reducing that "feeling of detachment"?

Sorry Gavin I only just saw this! I don't quite understand your point perhaps, but even if everything is perfectly in focus a foreground can still feel visually detached. Its a subjective perception though, and hard to define.

@@alexnail Hi Alex. Reading back, I can see that my wording isn't at all clear. 🤪 What I meant, is that I assume you used focus stacking in the image at 21:45 - either that or an aperture small enough to get everything in focus from front to back. I was suggesting that maybe if the foreground wasn't so razor sharp, ie. don't use focus stacking, then it wouldn't pull the eye so strongly, allowing an easier transition to the mountains in the distance. Just a thought, although I don't get that "feeling of detachment" myself. ATB. Gavin

@@gavinhall4112 oh I see sorry for misunderstanding. Sometimes that can work but for me only when the foreground is exceptionally simple. It’s actually quite a popular technique on Instagram now, but I find out of focus foregrounds very distracting generally. The only time I think I have done it is with snow and perfect long grasses. In general I’m adding a foreground to add context, depth and visual interest. If it’s out of focus all it really adds is depth, and that can be at the expense of being distracting. But obviously these are my personal opinions and you might find different
