I'm back with my second charcoal on canvas demo. Dogs are fun to draw and this Lab was no exception. Hope you enjoy! Prints available at joelpilcherart.com
I can’t even describe how grateful I am for this videos that you’ve started to make. Please, don’t stop! It gives me not only very useful tips, but also lots of inspiration and pleasure to watch. As always your work is incredible!:)
Hi Joel (I'm in Cape Town), First - beautiful work !!!! 2nd - acetone is a carcinogenic fluid !!!! do your spraying in a force - ventilated area!!! You are frying your brain bro
Whenever you get out the acetone you build up so much suspense, it's always my favorite part. Keep up the amazing work, you're a very inspiring artist.
Thank you very much for lots of great information, one day I will have more time to paint again, right now got to work but watching your painting is giving me so much joy. You're very talented.
Very cool! I'll have to try using a sponge. Does that also work on paper? I've never used charcoal on canvas before. You make erasing with a kneaded eraser look easy. I can't seem to get down to white with a kneaded eraser. I'm wondering if it's the type of charcoal you are using or the canvas. Is it vine charcoal?
I want to add that I love your work and I’m very grateful for your channel I have always wanted to use charcoal Lynn other mediums on canvas and was afraid to and didn’t understand it Anyway your work is beautiful
Can’t thank you enough for these videos. I’m in the middle of my first one with a picture of Canadian goose I purchased off wildlife reference photos. I’m using Arcylic with this which made me nervous because I never used Acrylic but charcole was a passion of mine as a kid. It is coming out really cool and it has been so much fun. It is so different from what I’m use to doing. I keep telling myself I won’t grow unless I step outside the box and try new things. Thanks for giving to the art community you will be blessed for your teachings I’m sure. Your eye for detail and your proportions are so accurate. You are truly an accomplished artist. God bless 😊
Once I put the acetone in my plastic spray bottle. I left the left over in the bottle for a while (meaning days and weeks) until I decided to use again. I realized that my bottle got shrunk! Is it normal?
Hello Joel, congratulations for your art! I would like to know if you put an acrylique coat on your canvas before working or you work directly on the canvas? Thank you! 😊
I've done both. This one had no prep in addition to the manufacturer's primer. Recently I've been using gesso first. It creates a bit of a different outcome, but both work. Thanks!
okay, what kind of charcoal is this that it just smears and blends perfectly like wet ink. I'm furious over the last few days trying to do charcoal and it doesn't blend or smear worth crap.
Wow sir. Which type of charcoal have u used? Would you please like to tell me its name of the brand and is it a willow charcoal or a compressed one? Sir it looks fantastic and stunning artwork 😍😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏
Hello, I'm French and don't understand all of your explanations..but a big thank you for your video...what you do is impressive...For the sponge, is it a normal sponge? is it just wet or dry? thanks again..
You've probably been asked this numerous times, but is there a particular reason you spray it with acetone? Is it just a signature style sort of reason? I love your work and I'm very thankful for your videos.
Nothing special on the sponge. It's just one that came with a set of brushes I purchased. I buy pre primed and stretched canvases from Milo art supply. I don't do any additional prep to them. Just open them up and start drawing. Thanks!
Joel, thank you for these videos. I have a quick question about using white acrylic versus white charcoal on highlights. I don’t find either satisfactory. Fixative seems to gray the charcoal whites defeating their purpose, and the acrylic white is “blueish” to my eye compared to the white of the canvas and makes the highlights looks like they should be in shadow. Do you have any advice for me? I use Liquitex Basics for the white acrylic and General’s charcoal white pencil. Thanks for any help! ~Rhonda
I know what you're saying. I have started using acrylic only for the highlights and it does have a cooler tone to it. I've found that when I varnish the work, the cool tone dissipates and it gives it more of a consistent overall feel. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip-that’s good to know about the varnish. I might also try tinting the white with a bit of unbleached titanium or other color to warm it up a bit. Keep up the great work!!
@@nestingbirdcreations Hi. Not sure if you've figured out how to correct the color shift (bluing) that you get from your white but a trick I've learned long ago is to add a little bit of orange to the white. Just a little bit at a time until it neutralizes the blue tone. It won't look pure white but it also won't look cool or warm either (if done right) I've only used this method with airbrush acrylics so I'm not sure how exactly it'll work for this application. I'd be interested to hear how it works for you, should you try it.
