I am going to try portraits from photos for awhile. Faces just seem to be rather natural for me as a beginning artist. Late bloomer. I struggled with two subjects yesterday, and when it was all done, I sat and drew the face of a child who looked very sad- in minutes, no reference, just my soul. I will be pursuing it. No art today, my eyes are very dry. I have Mungyo, NuPastel, and Carbothello pencils, full sets, along with 172 Prismacolor Premier pencils, 24 Col-Erase :-) so I am not lacking . I have a TON of makeup to experiment with to see if Pan Pastel is for me. I am definitely getting the soft stick that you blend with! Great work, I enjoyed the video and looking forward to the next one. Thanks!

I just read about pan pastels on a face book drawing pencil group and can to you tube to see what I could find. This was awesome. I will definitely be experimenting!!! The white Sharpy for the eye glint was also an awesome tip. I've been doing tiny pictures of just eyes as a full sized portrait intimidated me with all that blending. Pan pastels may change that!

You are truly blessed to have been given such talent. I'm watching you give this guy yellow eyes and violet n magenta in his skin and I'm wondering if you are one of the artists that does interpretive art (for lack of a better description) and you end up with this photo realistic piece. I am bowing at your feet. I don't know how you see those colors in flesh but it sure worked to perfection. Thank you so much for posting this for us. I just became your #1 fan.

Kathy that was an awesome step-by-step thorough video . One of the best I have seen to learn from. I am self taught as well and I I have done portraits in watercolor, acrylic, pastels and the last few month very serious about portraits in colored pencils . I have heard of using under painting with the CPs so I did a you tube search and found this . I learned a lot from it and I will soon try this for sure . I always use pan pastels for my background . I like the way the can cover ever so lightly and the effect it gives . I do tend to like the glossy look though but this is awesome as well. It doesn’t,t seem like you had to do much blending with the pencils am I seeing that right.. I am on a portrait painting journey. I have come a long way in a couple months .Anyway thanks so much for this wonderful video to share with us all.

You are good, but tell me.What paper are you using and what fixative? I use them in paper appropriate for pastel and can not keep them in the paper, they are leaving in the first touch. Fixative also makes them dark.

Hi Kathie, Thank you for your lovely video which I have just enjoyed. During the video you mentioned a product which you used to add final touches of white to the portrait. I think you said it was a "Sharpie Poster Paint /Water Marker " (Xtra-fine). I wonder if you could let me know where this can be purchased and if, indeed, I have the right name for it ?? I have tried Jacksons (U.K) without success. Thanks so much Kathy. Deirdre Hoffman
