I always look forward to watching how you do things and it really helps when it's in real time. From this portion of your painting I had found it very enlightening on layer skin tones with pan pastels. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to your next tutorial. Thanks Chrissy.

Hi Joy, thank you so much for watching. I used Pastelmat and with this surface I lost track of how many layers I used. So the answer is many layers. This paper is by far one of the best surfaces I've used with the techniques and the way I paint. Again thank you and happy painting 😍🎨

Many thanks Lorressia for watching and taking the time to comment. The brushes I use in this project are "Sofft" applicators by Panpastel. An absolute necessity when using Panpastels. It also works well when blending with soft pastels and pastel pencils.

@Xrissart

Weasel282 thanks for watching. Pastelmat is a versatile paper and great for coloured pencils, I even use solvent. I have a few videos where you see me using this method.

Hi, love your work.... Do you use a fixative between layers? I tried but i did loose the colors....they disappeared. All my details were gone. Do you have any tips?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 7 лет назад
Thea, thanks heaps for watching and taking the time to comment. Fixatives? That's always a very good question. I try to avoid using fixative because no matter how good the quality the fixative, it almost always dulls the pigment or alters the colour of the pigment. In this video I didn't use fixative. Tip? the paper has a lot to do with it (what paper do you use?) or maybe you are blending more than you need to, perhaps isolate and plan ahead where you think you will have to paint quite a bit of detail and apply pigment accordingly. Again thanks for watching, appreciate it:)

Fascinating. What do you call the applicator with the handle and can I buy one, or perhaps you made it?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 6 лет назад
G'Day Judy, thank you for your question. This applicator is called a "Sofft Tool" by PanPastels (yes double "ff" I didn't misspell it, funny). You can purchase the tool and sponges separately, there are various shapes. I use these all the time with PanPastels. If you get a chance you can see some of my other videos where you will see me use these all the time. Thank you so much for watching and stopping by:)

@Xrissart
@Xrissart 4 года назад
Hi Brenda, thank you so much for watching and your question. There's no real mystery other than keep on layering, but be careful what colours you're using to ensure you don't get mud. Then you also have to consider the surface you're using. Just recently I have uploaded about 8 Beginner PanPastels videos where I consentrate on the surface with same subject. Happy to answer as many questions as you have. Happy Painting.

How beautiful! Do you always paint on a flat surface instead of an easel? Or is that just for the video?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 6 лет назад
Loree thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I paint both ways. When I'm painting flat, I slightly raise my surface and yes this makes it easier to film. I do have some videos where I paint on the easel, for example my Element series (the Animals and Lady Element paintings).

If you aren't going to mention what colors you are using at the start and as you go, you can at least mention them in the comments. I've seen many skin tone videos, wanting so much to see what colors are being used, but people just do the painting and don't mention the colors they are using. It's a skin tone video. You eventually mentioned some colors, but I'm already frustrated and looking for another video. Thanks, but that's my suggestion.

Great video as usual and of course awesome painting! I am finding the small applicators (spongy short tools) get pretty chewed up. The larger softer tools are too big for smaller areas. You are using a longer brown ended tool , may I ask if you got it at an art store or if there is a specific name for it? Thank you.
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 5 лет назад
Hi Cindy, thank you for watching and thank you for your question. Longer brown tool you ask? That is also a Sofft Tool applicator, the spongy bit is replaceable, that's also available from the same art supply store you purchase your PanPastels. All the Sofft Tools get pretty chewed up, and it also depends how much pressure you apply on the surface. Again thank you for watching:) Happy Painting.

Xrissart Thanks for your response. Will have to look for that particular soft tool! Trying to lighten my pressure when applying pastel. Your videos are very helpful !

@@cindyfoster4353 All good Cindy, perhaps you can also try using a synthetic bristle brush. This technique is best on Pastelmat and has taken my work to a whole new level. Please also feel free to contact me about the art supplies and techniques I use.
@cindyfoster4353
@cindyfoster4353 5 лет назад
Xrissart Thank you I was just looking at synthetic tools on amazon. Also waiting for the “grit” that you paint on quality paper to make it more like pastel Pat. Love the pastel mat but it takes forever to come to Canada in the mail and when it arrived the pad was a tad bit warped which made taping it down impossible. Wish I could just buy it in a store but I am really enjoying the pastel mat so I will try making my own. I tried the cheaper pastel paper from Strathmore at our local craft store and there is no comparing . I had pretty good results with 5000 grit sandpaper that I found in my garage, but I am sure with time it won’t stand up too well :) Again, I appreciate your help. My art keeps me sane and your kindness is appreciated💕

Hi Marg thank you so much for watching and your question. The blue helps me gage my values when painting skin tones. Dark green and anthracite works well too.
